'I feel like I can finally breathe!' – Morgan Gibbs-White delighted with Nottingham Forest's start under Sean Dyche after ending Ange Postecoglou nightmare

Morgan Gibbs-White helped Nottingham Forest to a welcome win under new manager Sean Dyche and admitted afterwards that it feels like he and the rest of the Reds squad can "finally breathe" as they put Ange Postecoglou's disastrous spell as head coach behind them. Dyche's first game at the helm delivered an impressive 2-0 victory over Porto in the Europa League.

Nuno & Postecoglou gone: Forest onto third manager of the season

Forest headed into that contest ready to open another new era on Trentside under their third permanent boss of the 2025-26 campaign. Nuno Espirito Santo, who guided them into Europe last season, was relieved of his duties in early September. Reins were then passed to former Tottenham manager Postecoglou.

The Australian tactician lasted just 39 days in the City Ground dugout, with a run of eight winless matches seeing him make the wrong kind of history. A 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League proved to be the final straw, with Reds owner Evangelos Marinakis taking decisive action once again.

  • Immediate impact: Dyche enjoys perfect start at Forest

Former Forest youth team player Dyche, who once worked under the legendary Brian Clough, is now back in familiar surroundings – bringing former fan favourites Ian Woan and Steve Stone with him. They got off to the perfect start against Porto in front of a raucous home support that have a cause to get behind again.

Fans are buying into the Dyche project, with the players also very much on board. Gibbs-White admitted as much when – having netted the first goal under Forest’s new boss – he told : "I feel like I can finally breathe. It's been a difficult couple of months here with all the changes that have happened, the bad performances. So just happy to get our first win in nine games and to do it here at the City Ground and the European nights, it's an incredible feeling and there's no one here that deserves it more than the stadium, the fans. So we're delighted to get three points on the table and those three points are for the fans for sticking by us."

Back to basics: Forest fans & players believe again

Gibbs-White, who started as captain for Forest against Porto, added on the impact that Dyche has made across a few days in charge – with the Reds going back to basics: "That was the first thing the gaffer came in and said, ‘last season you had a real identity, a real structure to how you play’ and he wants to bring that in, and he also wants to build on top of that, and I think we showed that tonight. We were solid, hard to break down and when we went forward we could have been a bit more clinical, a bit better, but we take the three points and we move on.

"It's only been one game and we've only had a few training sessions, but you can feel the morale within the stadium, you can feel the morale within the group – it feels a lot higher, a lot more energetic. It feels a lot more positive and that's the way it needs to be and it needs to stay like that for us to continue and try to push forward. That's credit to the manager."

Postecoglou holds the unwanted honour of being the shortest-serving permanent manager in Premier League history – with Sam Allardyce’s 30-day reign at Leeds in 2023 seeing him fill an interim role at Elland Road.

Dyche is looking to shake Forest from what has been a nightmare start to the new season, with the early signs being that he is the man to get the Reds back on track – with loyal supporters on side.

  • Dyche reaction: Winning start ahead of trip to Bournemouth

Dyche said of calling the shots for the first time: "When you are on the side you don't hear every word, you hear a noise and you know if it's a positive noise or a negative noise. I'm not here to judge or question anything, just deliver what I can to the job. It's nice when they support you from the off, winning helps.

"These fans are pretty fair, win, lose or draw if they see a team out there wearing the shirt with pride and I think they'll accept that. To get it off with a good performance and a win is very pleasing for them. If they can accept me and my staff and what's going on that's got to be a bonus. Hopefully it will fast track the feeling around the ground."

Dyche’s first Premier League game as Forest boss will see a trip to Bournemouth taken in on Sunday, with the Reds currently sat inside the relegation zone and in need of a spark to make them upwardly mobile once more.

Massive Potter upgrade: "Outstanding" coach in final three for West Ham job

It would be an understatement to say that West Ham United have not had the start to the season they’d have been hoping for.

For example, the East Londoners aren’t taking part in the League Cup this week after losing to the equally terrible Wolverhampton Wanderers last month.

It’s somehow been even worse in the Premier League, with the Irons losing to Sunderland, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace in their first five games.

In short, things need to change, and it now looks like the club are going after a manager who’d be a massive upgrade on Graham Potter.

West Ham target Potter upgrade

The last few weeks have seen West Ham be linked with a host of potential Potter replacements, with one of the more prominent ones being Slaven Bilic.

Manager Focus

The former Hammers boss left the club in 2017, and has since managed Al-Ittihad, West Bromwich Albion, Beijing Guoan, Watford and Al-Fateh.

In other words, he’s not done much to suggest he’d bring in a new era at the club.

Likewise, while he’s doing a reasonable enough job with Coventry City, the links to Frank Lampard aren’t going to excite fans.

Fortunately, there is another coach on the club’s radar, someone who’d be a massive upgrade on Potter.

At least that’s according to a recent report from Claret and Hugh, which claims West Ham are very interested in Nuno Espírito Santo.

In fact, the report has revealed that the Portuguese manager is now one of three names on a shortlist for the role.

It remains unclear whether West Ham will be able to secure their man, but they should certainly keep trying, as he’d be a colossal upgrade on Potter.

How Nuno compares to Potter

The good news is that there are several reasons why we think Nuno would be a significant upgrade on Potter.

The most important of all, and the one that encompasses many of the others, is his track record.

More specifically, his track record in English football and the Premier League.

For example, although he had a fairly dire stint in charge of Tottenham Hotspur, the Portuguese coach has more than proven himself capable of managing at the top level with both Wolves and Nottingham Forest.

He took over the former when they were still in the Championship, led them to promotion in his first campaign and then, within a few years, had them playing Europa League football.

Likewise, when he took over at Forest, it was viewed as something of an impossible job, but he led them from relegation candidates to European football in a season and a half.

On the other hand, while Potter did a pretty good job with Brighton & Hove Albion, he proceeded to fail with Chelsea, and it would be hard to find someone who’d claim he isn’t failing at the London Stadium today.

Finally, you only need to compare their records in the top-flight to see who is the better manager.

The “outstanding” Portuguese coach, as dubbed by commentator Adam Summerton, has taken charge of 184 games in the Premier League, of which his teams have won 72, lost 67, drawn 45 and averaged 1.42 points per game.

In contrast, the Englishman has taken charge of 164 games in the competition, of which 47 have been wins, 55 draws, and 62 losses, which comes out to a points per game average of just 1.20.

Ultimately, West Ham need a new manager, and Nuno looks like the best man for the job.

Sangha and Carey tons hand South Australia first Shield title in 29 years

Carey made 105 while Sangha finished 126 not out as they produced the highest fourth innings chase in final history after coming together at 28 for 3

Stunning centuries from Alex Carey and Jason Sangha have helped deliver South Australia their first Sheffield Shield title in 29 years after they beat Queensland by four wickets at Karen Rolton Oval. The pair produced a brilliant rearguard 202-run stand to help the hosts run down the highest fourth innings chase in Shield final history, 270, on the fourth afternoon with Sangha finishing unbeaten on 126 while Carey was dismissed for 105 with 40 runs still required. Carey’s innings was a masterclass in rotating the strike under pressure. His 105 came off just 132 balls with only nine fours and a six.Sangha found the boundary freely at the other end striking 16 fours and two sixes in his 126 not out from 192. When he hit the winning runs it sparked wild celebrations that were reminiscent of 1996 as most of the 4000-strong crowd, the biggest at a Shield game in decades, stormed onto the field to celebrate as Sangha charged towards the rooms.Related

Doggett's six trumps Vidler's four on dramatic opening day to Shield final

Brendan Doggett was named player of the match for his 11-wicket haul, finishing with the best match figures in Shield final history. The title also means South Australia, under first-year captain Nathan McSweeney and coach Ryan Harris, claimed the Shield and One-Day Cup double for the first time in the state’s history.South Australia’s drought looked like it might extend to three decades when the home side slumped to 28 for 3 in the morning on the back of some exceptional new ball bowling from Mark Steketee and Michael Neser. It should have been 37 for 4 when Sangha indecisively tried to play and then leave another probing delivery from Steketee. He didn’t get his bat out of the way in time and the edge flew low to Usman Khawaja’s right at first slip. Ben McDermott dived full length from second slip with the left hand infront of Khawaja but could not hang on.

That was the last clear chance Queensland would produce. It was fitting that Australia’s Test wicketkeeper Carey was the hero for his home state. He was one of only three home grown South Australians in the line-up and one of only two to have played in South Australia’s last Shield final appearance eight years ago. His century was his ninth for South Australia, his second in as many games and his fourth for the season in just five Shield appearances. It was fitting too in another sense that Sangha was there as well. Like most of his teammates, he had travelled to South Australia from New South Wales for an opportunity and been welcomed with open arms. His century was his third of the season in just six games and his second in his last three innings.Carey’s arrival signalled calm for an entire state that seemed both wracked with nerves and floundering under the weight of 29 years without success.Neser and Steketee had raised the anxiety levels with some sublime early morning bowling to back up yesterday’s rear-guard with the bat. Neser nicked off Conor McInerney in the third over with a delivery that pitched on middle and nipped across the left-hander with Angus Lovell pouching the catch at third slip.Steketee came on first change after a four-over burst from Callum Vidler and struck first ball. Henry Hunt was forced to defend a good length delivery that angled in and left him on a fifth stump line and the thick edge was well taken by McDermott at second slip.South Australia won their first Sheffield Shield title in 29 years•Getty Images

Steketee kept asking questions and McSweeney succumbed in a similar fashion with a ball that climbed and left him from a good length to catch the edge with Jimmy Peirson completing the catch to his right. But Carey’s entrance changed the whole tone of the morning. Three slips became two immediately as cover was installed and mid-off moved much deeper. Carey scored two singles and a two from his first four balls. Queensland’s quicks could not contain him. Sangha’s nerves eased. He benefitted from some overpitched deliveries at the other end and played some glorious drives down the ground.Steketee needed a rest after a phenomenal six-over spell that yielded 2 for 17, as well as the edge that wasn’t held. When Vidler returned, Carey and Sangha took 19 from his last two overs before lunch to ease any tension and leave South Australia 64 for 3 at the break.Steketee and Neser could not reproduce the magic after lunch with a 26-over-old ball. Just as South Australia had experienced in the third innings, the pitch flattened out as ball lost its hardness. Sangha and Carey cashed in. When Queensland skipper Marnus Labuschagne turned to the spin of Mitchell Swepson, Sangha pulled him for an enormous six over midwicket while Carey slog-swept him into the temporary stands on the city side. The pair rattled past their half-centuries and reduced the required runs at an uncontrollable rate for Queensland. They piled on 118 in 29 overs in the middle session and hardly gave a chance. The closest Queensland came were two fiercely struck balls, one from each player, that were just over the head of a leaping McDermott as they screamed away to the rope. Carey edged Neser from around the wicket while Peirson was up to the stumps but it was well wide and there were no slips in place as most of the fielders were in front of the wicket to try and contain the scoring.Jason Sangha and Alex Carey shared a match-winning 202-run stand•Getty Images

The pair continued to motor after tea and got more adventurous with their running. Both narrowly avoided run outs as they neared their respective centuries. Sangha reached his with a push into the off side and a muted celebration with victory still in his sights.Carey raised his with another thumping off drive against Swepson’s turn from around the wicket to reach the rope once more. His celebration was also understated with 49 runs still needed for the title. He smacked his ninth boundary in the next over with an emphatic pull shot off Steketee. But it would be his last. Steketee got a richly deserved third with a brilliant slower ball that deceived Carey as he chopped on off the inside edge.Carey’s exit saw the nerves return despite the job being all but done. Jake Lehmann chopped Swepson on trying to cut a ball spinning back from wide of off with 15 to win. Liam Scott smashed a pull shot to McDermott at square leg who held an excellent catch to leave South Australia still needing 10 with only four wickets in hand.Ben Manenti eased the nerves with two excellent drives through cover off Swepson before Sangha was able to clip the winning runs through midwicket.

Man City now targeting "fantastic" Chelsea gem who Maresca wants to keep

In an unexpected move, Manchester City have now reportedly emerged as contenders to sign a young Chelsea starlet who Enzo Maresca is keen to keep hold of.

Man City in talks to sell Ederson

It looks set to be the late show at the Etihad this month as Pep Guardiola aims to strengthen his side one final time in the summer transfer window. That show is unlikely to go on without sacrifice, however, and whilst names such as Gianluigi Donnarumma have emerged on City’s radar, it looks as though Ederson could be heading for the exit door.

Ederson will go down as one of the most important signings of the Guardiola era, but his time now looks as though it’s coming to an end. Whether there’s time for all of the parts to move into place for the Brazilian to become a Galatasaray player and Donnarumma to join Manchester City remains to be seen, however.

Guardiola had his say on the future of both Ederson and winger Savinho in the build-up to the Wolverhampton Wanderers game – saying: “Ederson didn’t come to me and said he wanted to leave or he has an offer. All the players here are our players and I want them. What’s going to happen in three weeks, nobody knows.”

Man City in talks to sell "incredible" star in key step towards Donnarumma

The Citizens could enjoy quite the domino effect.

ByTom Cunningham Aug 16, 2025

Of course, the Donnarumma and Ederson saga isn’t the only one to watch, either. Manchester City have also reportedly set their sights on an unexpected move to deal Chelsea a frustrating blow this summer.

Man City interested in Acheampong

As reported by The Guardian, Manchester City are now surprise contenders to sign Josh Acheampong from Chelsea, although Enzo Maresca is keen to keep hold of the young defender.

Of course, there have been plenty who have featured for both clubs in the past, with Mateo Kovavic and Marcus Betinelli the most recent examples. But Chelsea will be keen to ensure that Acheampong doesn’t follow suit. In a packed dressing room, there’s still a place for the 19-year-old right-back who has already earned the praise of Maresca.

Chelsea's Tyrique George celebrates scoring their third goal withJoshAcheampong

The Chelsea boss told reporters: “But the one that I fell in love with is Josh Acheampong because for me potentially he can be fantastic player, a top player for this club, and for football in general.

“A good player shows you they can play in different position and do good. He was a full back, good, midfielder, good, central defender, good, so it’s not about ‘I play in that position or in that position’ — if you are a good player you can be in different positions.”

What will be music to Maresca’s ears is that Acheampong is under contract until 2029, which should leave those at Stamford Bridge in a strong position to keep hold of their versatile gem.

Tottenham make club record bid to hijack Liverpool for their very own version of Wirtz

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly submitted a blockbuster £80m+ offer to sign a new left winger after saying an emotional goodbye to Son Heung-min.

Son plays final Tottenham game

Having revealed the news that he wants to leave Spurs this summer and bring an end to an iconic 13-year run last week, Son has now played his final game for the North London club. Bidding his farewell, the winger bowed out in the Lilywhites’ friendly draw against Premier League rivals Newcastle United in his home country, South Korea.

Next up for the 33-year-old seems to be MLS side LAFC, who have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Son and with Spurs over a summer switch.

As for Spurs, their next task is to replace a player that some may deem irreplaceable. Already this summer, they’ve welcomed Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich, Mathys Tel in a permanent deal and Mohammed Kudus.

Now, however, they could be about to pull off their most impressive signing yet amid reports that Daniel Levy and co. have submitted a stunning opening offer.

Tottenham submit Rodrygo offer

According to Spanish media outlets, Tottenham have now submitted an opening offer to sign Rodrygo worth as much as €100m (£87m) this summer. The Real Madrid winger has been the subject of interest from both Arsenal and Liverpool in recent months, and even agreed personal terms with the Reds recently, but with their focus elsewhere, the Lilywhites are reportedly attempting to steal the headlines with a shock move.

Interestingly, Rodrygo’s statistical profile matches up with another Liverpool signing – Florian Wirtz. Both players rank highly against their positional peers for non-penalty goals, shot-creating actions and succesful take-ons, as per FBRef.

Now, he could yet become the star of the show under Thomas Frank in what would become Spurs’ record signing by a considerable margin.

However, although Real Madrid have given them permission to speak to Rodrygo, convincing the 24-year-old to swap the Spanish giants for North London will reportedly be a tough task for Tottenham chiefs. And overcoming that obstacle is likely to be the turning point to any deal getting over the line this summer.

Dubbed “special” by former Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, Rodrygo continues to be linked with a summer switch to the Premier League, with Spurs the latest of a growing list of clubs to pursue his signature.

Chelsea now eye deal to sign "most signed wonderkid" in Football Manager

Chelsea chiefs are now internally debating a potential deal for another rising star, according to a report out of Stamford Bridge this week.

Chelsea continue transfer policy of signing high-potential starlets

Since the start of 2025, despite Enzo Maresca strongly suggesting that Chelsea need to bring in more experienced players, BlueCo have shown no sign of slowing down when it comes to their transfer policy of signing world football’s brightest up-and-coming talents.

Earlier this year, the west Londoners agreed a double-deal with Sporting CP to sign their rising star duo, Geovany Quenda (18) and Dario Essugo (20), for a total fee of around £62.5 million, with the former set to fully join them in 2026 and the latter this summer.

It is now also being reported by reliable media sources that Chelsea are planning a pre-2026 deal for 22-year-old Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.

Since Romano’s initial report, French media sources have claimed that Chelsea have moved in with a six-year contract offer to Emegha, and an agreement for the Ligue 1 sensation is merely a “matter of time”.

“Chelsea have offered Emanuel Emegha a six-year contract valid until June 2031,” wrote Foot Mercato reporter Santi Aouna on X.

“The intention is for him to stay in Strasbourg for another year and then go to Chelsea. A full agreement is just a matter of time.”

As Maresca’s side carry on planning for the long-term, Brighton starlet Valentin Barco, who spent the 2024/2025 on loan at Strasbourg, has now entered their radar.

Chelsea hold internal talks over signing Valentin Barco from Brighton

The Argentine midfielder can play in a variety of roles on the left, and he was the “most signed wonderkid” on popular PC game Football Manager last year.

According to CaughtOffside, while no formal approach has been made yet, Chelsea are holding internal talks over a potential move for Barco, and Maresca is believed to be a personal admirer of the 20-year-old.

Valentin Barco against Marcelo for Boca Juniors.

“(He’s a) left back but he’s not going to be playing there, I don’t think,” said South American football expert Tim Vickery.

“He’s a left-sided attacking midfielder. Very good running with the ball. Amazing power that he generates from his left foot. Good from set-pieces.

“He can combine well. He had a sweet little thing going with Edison Cavani at Boca Juniors.”

Barco is fresh off a productive campaign at Strasbourg, finishing 24/25 as one of their best-performing players in Ligue 1 by average match rating per 90 – starting 14 Ligue 1 matches and bagging two assists (WhoScored).

It is little surprise Chelsea have taken note of his displays, possibly while keeping tabs on Andrey Santos’ progress in France and scouting Emanuel Emegha. In any case, the Blues’ relationship with their sister club may end up paying dividends again.

Man City were once linked with a move for Barco in 2023 as well, indicating he’s a player of real promise.
