Chelsea eyeing experienced free agent who Barcelona are "pushing" to sign

Chelsea chiefs are refusing to rule out signing a more experienced player behind-the-scenes, which goes against BlueCo’s usual transfer strategy, and they’re actively considering a free agent who Barcelona really want at the Camp Nou.

Chelsea planning to sign a new centre-back this summer

Amid Wesley Fofana’s long-term injury, which has ruled the Frenchman out for the remainder of 2024/2025, Chelsea are believed to be weighing up the possibility of another central defender this summer.

Chelsea "serious" about signing £62m Liam Delap alternative after weekend twist

The west Londoners are debating their best summer striker target.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 8, 2025

Their centre-back shortage prompted Enzo Maresca and co to activate the recall clause in Trevoh Chalobah’s loan deal at Crystal Palace, temporarily plugging the gap, but Chelsea are intending to reinforce that area of the squad with a star signing for the long-term.

Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen is a top target for Chelsea, according to reports, but they’re likely to face major competition for the Spaniard’s services considering he’ll have an active £50 million release clause in his contract this summer.

There have also been rumours of Chelsea and a potential move to re-sign former Cobham academy graduate Marc Guehi. Maresca’s side are among the favourites to strike a deal for the England international, who is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract, but his price tag will still reportedly range from £50-60 million.

Given the west Londoners are linked with bringing in a new goalkeeper, midfielder, winger and striker, Chelsea will need to tread carefully and find the best-value option possible to solidify their backline.

Chelsea considering Jonathan Tah move amid Barcelona interest

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Bayer Leverkusen stalwart Jonathan Tah is under consideration at Stamford Bridge.

The 29-year-old played a role in Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga triumph last term, helping them to end the domestic campaign unbeaten, and he’s set to be up for grabs as a free agent this summer as things stand.

Chelsea are weighing up the possibility of signing Tah at zero cost, but Barcelona pose a threat, as they are “pushing hard” to land the German.

“We have heard through a source that Chelsea are never going to rule out signing an older and more experienced player if they can sign that player under the right circumstances,” wrote Phillips, via his Substack.

“We have heard that 29-year-old centre back from Bayer Leverkusen Jonathan Tah is still under consideration this summer. He is at this moment a free agent in the summer and although Barcelona are pushing to sign him, Chelsea do have him as a potential option but only if they can agree on wages with the player.

“However, there is no indication yet that the player would accept anything from Chelsea but he is keeping his options open right now. I’m unaware as of now if Chelsea have made an approach, but I’m hearing new noise on him.”

He would be an intriguing option for Maresca, and it is clear to see Tah very much remains an elite-level defender.

Over the course of 2024/2025, the 35-cap international has started 27 top-flight matches this season as a mainstay under Xabi Alonso, averaging an impressive 93% passing accuracy out from the back (WhoScored).

Tah would be a snip for Chelsea, regardless of his age, and it is an option which should definitely be given deserved thought.

The little big hit! Bismah Maroof's daughter steals the show after intense India-Pakistan contest

Images of the Indian players and six-month-old Fatima became the source of great happiness on social media

Annesha Ghosh07-Mar-20220:24

Maroof – ‘My mother and daughter were here, so it was very special’

India vs Pakistan is always special, but this Sunday at the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup was more so, thanks to a six-month-old member of Pakistan’s touring party. On the field, it was a dominant 107-run win for India, with Pooja Vastrakar, Sneh Rana and Rajeshwari Gayakwad calling the shots. Off it, it was all about Fatima. Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof’s daughter became the centre of attention after the game when the Indian players – Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet Kaur among them – just couldn’t have enough of the toddler. In no time, visuals of the interaction were all over the internet.

Fatima, and her mother, had attracted attention even before the game. Photographs of Maroof entering the stadium in Mount Maunganui with her daughter cradled in one arm and one of her team-mates pushing the baby’s cradle became an instant source of delight. The images also spoke of women’s cricket breaking new ground. Maroof, after all, had become the first beneficiary of a bespoke maternity policy for players in the subcontinent, and Sunday’s fixture was her first competitive match since returning from maternity leave.”Overall, it was a really different feeling coming back, in a World Cup, and playing a match,” Maroof said when asked how it felt to be back in the middle, this time as a mother. “I think I was a bit emotional. My mother and daughter are there. It was a special moment for me. I really want to make it count this tournament, because they both are here.”That 30-year-old Maroof was able to travel to New Zealand with her daughter – as well as her mother, Fatima’s carer – was also down to the PCB’s maternity rule, which provisions the mother “to travel with a support person of her choice to assist in caring for her infant child”, with travel and accommodation costs shared equally between the board and the player.Bismah Maroof and her daughter became a source of delight well before the game started•Phil Walter/ICC/Getty ImagesWriting on Instagram, Mandhana said, “Coming back post pregnancy in 6 months and playing international cricket is so inspiring. Bismah Maroof setting an example for sportswomen across the globe. Lots of love to baby Fatima from India and I hope she picks the bat just like you bcoz lefties are special.”As such, the two teams, whether the women or the men, rarely play each other because of political differences between the two countries. They meet only at multi-nation tournaments, but as Nida Dar said after the game, the off-field camaraderie between the players has only grown over the years.”We get very few matches against India. But when the two teams do get to meet each other, we usually catch up and have a lot of good conversations between us,” Dar said. “Sometimes we chat about the match. Many of the players [from both teams] are good friends, too, so they talk among them about things beyond the matches as well.”But the fact is, we have always shared a good bond between us, a good relationship between us, and we try to keep it that way and hopefully will do so in the future, too. Match side [The contest has its place, our friendship has its place too]. But we’ve always had healthy conversations.”It felt very good when they [the Indian players] came over and spoke to us, and we chatted after the game, especially [about] Bismah’s baby, who loves being pampered and she does get pampered a lot. So she enjoyed [the attention], and so did we, the players.”

'The new Swann' at 22, retired five years later: Adam Riley at peace with fall from prominence

Perceived need for speed led offspinner to lose his action after touring with Lions

Matt Roller06-Feb-2020Is Adam Riley the new Graeme Swann? That was the question posed by in 2014, following another impressive early-season performance by the promising Kent offspinner, fresh out of university and keeping England’s James Tredwell out of the county’s first team.Riley’s promise was evident to anyone who had seen him bowl. A classical offspinner blessed with the height to get good bounce off most surfaces, he started 2014 as a final-year geography student at Loughborough University, and finished it with 57 first-class wickets, more than any spinner in England but Saeed Ajmal and Jeetan Patel. Unsurprisingly, greater recognition quickly followed: he was invited to bowl in the Lord’s nets ahead of a Test against India, and was sent on winter trips to Sri Lanka and South Africa by the ECB before representing the MCC in the Champion County game in the spring. It seemed a matter of when, and not if he would fill the void left by Swann’s premature retirement during the 2013-14 Ashes.ARCHIVE: England mark time on RileyBut somewhere along the way, things went awry. From the start of the 2015 home summer until the end of his career, Riley would manage only 25 more first-class wickets, and quietly announced his retirement last year at the age of 27. He now works at Dulwich College, having been appointed as the school’s head of player development at the end of 2019.”Kent told me they weren’t going to renew my contract,” Riley explains. “I had a bit of a cooling-off period, where I decided I wasn’t going to play any cricket and have a think about what I wanted to do next. I took the view that I’d run my race.”The question, then, is how this happened: how, in the space of five years, did a young, hungry, talented bowler, who had taken bags of first-class wickets head from England’s spinner-in-waiting into early retirement?”You can look at the footage, and it’s all obvious. I was never the same bowler after that winter,” Riley reflects. “At the time, I remember there being a big push for spinners to bowl a bit quicker. That’s what Swann was doing, that’s what Ajmal was doing, Muralitharan did that, Warne did that.”I guess they were trying to find that ‘next Graeme Swann’. Swann was a world-class spinner – the best who’s played for England, certainly that I’ve been able to watch live – and he naturally bowled a very quick pace but still got shape on the ball. That’s what they were encouraging us to do.”I probably took that too literally, and ended up focusing on trying to bowl quicker instead of getting shape on the ball.”The parallels with a current England spinner are immediately apparent. Before the end of his first over on ODI debut on Tuesday, Matt Parkinson’s bowling speed was being criticised by TV commentators: the suggestion was that while his loopy legbreaks worked at county level, he would need to speed up to have international success. But Riley’s career serves as a cautionary tale. “The danger is that if you change one thing, and that becomes ingrained but isn’t the right thing, all of a sudden you’ve got to iron out two things that have become bad habits,” he says. “Then you can try something else technical, and actually that’s not right either.”And it starts building up to a bit of a mess, really.”Riley returned to Kent at the start of 2015 knowing that something had come wrong. After a handful of ineffective performances, he dropped out of the firing line and into the second team. He worked extensively with Min Patel behind the scenes but the pair “couldn’t seem to put our fingers on how to get me back to where I was”.Fleeting first-team appearances brought occasional success, like a seven-wicket return in a victory against Derbyshire in 2018, but by the end of May last year, Kent had decided they had invested enough time and effort into resurrecting a career that seemed to be going nowhere.”At some stages during that three or four-year period it became a mental thing as well, where I was struggling mentally. At one stage, I was being talked about as one of the best young prospects in England, and then I couldn’t do what I was doing. It was quite hard to get my head round.”I see it in so many other players. They’ll have a fantastic year, and then if it starts to go wrong, they’ll think something’s got to change technically when actually sometimes it’s just a mindset thing.”You think: what’s got you to that point? What’s got you that first-team place? What’s got you that professional contract? Sometimes you need to have a bit more faith in that.”If I could rewind back to 2014, that’s what I’d do: I’d be more stubborn, and say, ‘you know what? I just got picked for England Lions on the back of taking 60 first-class wickets. Yes, to play international cricket I might need to bowl faster, but at the moment I’m 22, I’ve played 30 first-class games, and I’d quite like to stick with what I’m doing.’ But that comes with experience, and at the time I didn’t have that. Hindsight is a beautiful thing.”Adam Riley celebrates a wicket in his final first-class appearance•Getty ImagesWhile his release last summer was “not completely mutual – you never want to be told you’re not wanted”, Riley can reflect that compared to plenty of others, he was relatively fortunate in how his career ended. His Kent deal ran until the end of the season, and he was given notice that it would not be renewed four months before; often, players are not formally told until a matter of weeks before that a fresh contract will not be forthcoming.”It gave me four months to work out what I wanted to do next – if they’d done that on August 31, then actually I’d have been in a worse head space than I am now. I’m in a good one – I’m happy that I’m back doing something I love, and I’ve fallen on my feet.”Riley is glowing about the help he has had from the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) during his transition into retirement, in the knowledge that while he has managed to find a job quickly, there are countless stories of players struggling to cope with the precarious nature of professional sport.

I’m at peace with it now – I don’t really look back and think what if?Adam Riley

“I know other people who were still scraping around every month to try and pay the bills 12 months down the line, and that’s scary. I had some rainy day money that would have got me through at least until Christmas, and it’s with stuff like that when what you hear earlier in your career from the PCA comes to the forefront.”When you’re 21 and wet round the ears you just think ‘I’m going to be playing cricket for the next 15 years’ when the reality is that the average retirement age in professional cricket in 26. Granted, now is a good time to be getting into the game as a young player, with the salary cap going up and the extra competition [the Hundred] going on, but the same principle is going to apply.Riley worked with Tom Jones, his local PCA personal development manager, who “walked me through what happens next, and gave me almost a bit of life counselling”. That included working out what sort of job he wanted, updating his CV, and simply being available at the end of the phone as he tried to work out where he stood.”I read a lot of articles about players that feel like they lose their identity [after retirement]. All they’ve known is being a professional cricketer, and all they’ve been known as by their friends is ‘Adam, the guy who players cricket’. Suddenly, you’ve got to redesign yourself as ‘Adam, who sells insurance’ or whatever it is you go into.”Riley started in his new role at Dulwich at the end of 2019, after his former Kent team-mate Geraint Jones passed his details onto Richard Coughtrie, the master in charge of cricket, and will combine his role with work with Kent U-15s. He enjoys the dressing room-style camaraderie of the PE department, and has his career in healthy perspective; he may not have been the next Graeme Swann, but that doesn’t keep him up at night.”I’m at peace with it now – I don’t really look back and think ‘what if?’. It’s not a major event in the grand scheme of all the years of work I’ll have to do between now and when I retire, it’s just a little substory. But I get to say I’m one of the 0.01% of people that get to play professional cricket – and I had a good go at it.”

As bad as Aasgaard: Rangers must drop Ibrox dud who Rohl "needs more from"

Glasgow Rangers head coach Danny Rohl made it four wins from four in the Scottish Premiership since his move to Ibrox to replace Russell Martin in the dugout with a 2-1 win over Livingston on Saturday.

Goals from Emmanuel Fernandez and Mohamed Diomande scored the goals for the Light Blues at Ibrox to secure all three points for the German manager.

It was a game that was packed with controversial incidents, though, as Livingston’s equaliser and Diomande’s winner were both tight offside calls that were ultimately deemed to be legal.

The most contentious moment of the game came when Fernandez appeared to block a goal-bound shot with his arm, but his arm was in a natural position and VAR opted not to intervene.

That caused the official Livingston account to post on X that the officials did not get “a penalty for a blatant handball to the Lions” in their full-time post after the match.

Rohl, however, will be more concerned with the performances of some of his players, rather than the officials, and Thelo Aasgaard was one of the players who failed to deliver on Saturday.

Why Thelo Aasgaard must be dropped

The Norway international was given the nod to start the match in the number ten position, with Nico Raskin and Diomande behind him in midfield, but he was unable to justify his inclusion in the side with a strong performance.

Instead, the summer signing from Luton Town produced a dismal first-half display that caused Rohl to withdraw him from the match at half-time to bring Bojan Miovski into the game.

Per Sofascore, Aasgaard did not register a single shot on goal and created one chance, which was not a ‘big chance’, in 45 minutes on the pitch before being placed on the bench.

As you can see in the table above, the English-born midfield flop is yet to score a goal or create more than one chance in a game for any permanent Rangers head coach in the Premiership this season.

He has provided one assist in the league under Rohl, against Dundee, but that was a fairly simple pass from the halfway line that Djeidi Gassama turned into a wonderful goal, as shown in the clip below.

These statistics, including his poor display against Livingston, show why Rohl should ruthlessly drop the attacking midfielder from the starting line-up for the Europa League clash with Braga at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Unfortunately, the 23-year-old summer signing has not done enough with his opportunities on the pitch to prove to the former Sheffield Wednesday head coach that he deserves to keep his place in the starting XI moving forward.

Aasgaard was far from the only Rangers player who failed to deliver a good enough performance against Livingston, though, and is not the only flop who should drop out of the side for the upcoming clash with Braga.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Rohl must also ruthlessly ditch right-sided attacker Oliver Antman from the starting line-up for that meeting with the Portuguese outfit after his struggles in a Gers shirt of late.

Why Rangers should drop Oliver Antman against Braga

The German head coach may have hoped that the winger’s international performances for Finland during the international would provide him with confidence and positive momentum for the game against Livingston.

Antman scored, as shown in the clip above, and provided an assist for former Celtic striker Teemu Pukki in a 4-0 win for his country against Andorra on Monday.

Unfortunately, though, the summer signing from Go Ahead Eagles was unable to transfer his form for Finland over to his time on the pitch with Rangers on Saturday, as he failed to deliver an impressive display.

As you can see in the table above, Antman was just as bad as Aasgaard against Livingston. They both failed to register a shot on goal and only created one chance for the team, without creating any ‘big chances’.

Rangers signed the Finland international to provide creativity on the right flank after he produced an eye-catching return of 17 assists in all competitions at club level during the 2024/25 campaign, to go along with seven goals.

Antman, though, has no goals and one assist in nine Premiership outings for the Scottish giants so far this season, and that assist came in the away clash with Livingston back in September.

Since he provided two assists against Viktoria Plzen in a 3-0 win on his debut for the club, the forward has no goals and one assist in 17 appearances in all competitions for the Gers, per Transfermarkt, and writer Kai Watson noted that Rangers “need more from” him.

Antman has not been able to carry his form for Go Ahead Eagles from last season over to Scottish football, yet, and his performance against Livingston on Saturday was another ineffective outing for the Light Blues.

On top of that, the 24-year-old flop has no goals and no assists in three matches in the league phase of the Europa League this term, which does not suggest that he is likely to have much of a positive impact against Braga on Thursday.

Therefore, Rohl must ruthlessly ditch both Antman and Aasgaard from the starting line-up for the clash with the Liga Portugal outfit after their underwhelming performances against Livingston.

West Ham's "entertainer" could be their biggest talent since Rice & Oxford

Whether buying them or producing them in the academy, West Ham United have a proud history of developing some of the best talent around.

The best example of this in recent years is undoubtedly Declan Rice, as while joining a fellow London club is never ideal, he did so after captaining the side to European glory.

However, not every promising prospect goes on to fulfil their potential, as before the Englishman, the most talked about youngster at the club was probably Reece Oxford.

So, Nuno Espírito Santo will be hoping that West Ham’s latest exciting talent follows in the footsteps of Rice and not Oxford.

Where is Reece Oxford today?

Ironically, Oxford’s most memorable game as a West Ham player was his full Premier League debut, away to Arsenal in the club’s opening game of the 2015/16 season.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The young Englishman, who was just 16 years old at the time, started in the middle of the park and was given what seemed to be the impossible task of stopping a Gunners’ team that included the likes of Mesut Özil, Santi Cazorla and an in-form Aaron Ramsey.

Yet, instead of being made to look foolish, he helped the Hammers to a famous 2-0 victory, and was described as having “everything” by then manager Slaven Bilic at full-time.

Reece-Oxford-and-Slaven-Bilic

However, even after putting in such an incredible showing and being looked at as the club’s “main talent” at the time, per an interview with former West Ham trainee Lewis Page, the teenager would only go on to make another 11 first-team appearances that season, and then go on loan to Reading midway through the following campaign.

Unfortunately, injuries kept him to just five appearances for the Royals, and after two more underwhelming loan spells in Germany, he was finally sold to Bundesliga side Augsburg in the summer of 2019.

Initially, things started to look up for the youngster: while he wasn’t playing every week, he was getting more action than before. But it wouldn’t last, as injuries reared their ugly heads once again.

Then a severe case of long COVID kept him out of first-team action from November 2022 until he left the club this summer.

Unfortunately, Oxford remains without a club today, but at 26, there is still a chance he can find his way back into the game. So, with all that said, West Ham will be hoping their latest talent can follow more in Rice’s footsteps.

West Ham's biggest talent since Rice and Oxford

The good news for West Ham fans is that there are several exciting U21 players in the current squad, like Callum Marshall and Oliver Scarles, but the most promising has to be Luis Guilherme.

The 19-year-old joined the Hammers from Brazilian outfit Palmeiras last summer for a fee of around £25.5m, and while that is a lot for such a young player, it might prove to be a bargain in the future.

For example, one of his best traits is that while he is primarily looked at as a right-winger, he’s more than capable of playing all over the pitch, from attacking midfield to left-wing and even up top or as a second-striker.

Moreover, even though the goal involvements have not exactly flowed freely so far, those in the know are incredibly excited about his attacking potential.

According to respected analyst Ben Mattinson, while the Brazilian gem doesn’t take enough shots, when he does, they are of a “high calibre.”

Furthermore, the more Nuno uses him and the more comfortable he becomes in the English game, the more exciting the Hammers could become.

This is because, according to Mattinson, the “electric” winger is a player who “thrives on transitions” and can “turn past players with ease” thanks to his “elite ball manipulation,” which sounds like a player fans would want to watch.

Finally, while he might not hit the levels of a Dimitri Payet, he could bring some of the trickery and mazy runs the Frenchman was famous for back to the London Stadium.

At least that is what it sounds like when Mattinson describes him as an “entertainer” who is capable of producing “match-winning moments,” be that through a “30-yard screamer” or by “taking on players.”

Ultimately, fans have not quite been able to see it over the last year, but there is a very good chance that Guilherme is West Ham’s most exciting prospect since Rice and Oxford, but only time will tell which player he emulates.

The West Ham gem could help Nuno Espirito Santo pick up his first win in the Premier League.

Suryakumar and Boult end at No. 2 and No. 3 on IPL 2025 Orange and Purple Cap tables

Rapid Fire review – Shreyas Iyer’s hat-trick of sixes turned the match

Orange Cap tableIt’s looking increasingly likely that B Sai Sudharsan, the Gujarat Titans (GT) opener, will not have to give up that Orange Cap he has been wearing for a long, long time now. He’s done for the tournament with 759 runs, but the nearest competitor to still be active at this stage is Virat Kohli, but the RCB hero is well behind with 614 runs at No. 5. That’s a gap of 145 runs. Not impossible, of course. It might not be impossible for the next in line either, even if it feels somewhat improbable. Shreyas Iyer, the PBKS captain, is just behind Kohli at No. 6 with 603 runs. He had been well behind in that race, around the No. 10-No. 11 mark, for the longest time, but the 87 not out of 41 balls he scored to knock MI out of IPL 2025 has made him the sixth batter past the 600-run mark this season.Behind Sai Sudharsan and above third-placed GT captain Shubman Gill is Suryakumar Yadav, who finished his stellar IPL 2025 with 717 runs after scoring 44 in Qualifier 2. It was, incredibly, Suryakumar’s 16 successive score of 25-plus in T20s, but not enough to put MI in the final. Before we move to the wicket-takers, here’s another one for you to check out: the most prolific six-hitters’ list, which Iyer could well end up topping by the time the season is done.Suryakumar, meanwhile, is right on top of ESPNcricinfo’s MVP table.Purple Cap tableAs things stand, Josh Hazlewood of RCB is the only bowler with a realistic chance of toppling GT’s Prasidh Krishna from the perch. Hazlewood has 21 wickets. Prasidh, the leader, has 25. It would still need five wickets, though.Trent Boult of MI picked up then wicket of Prabhsimran Singh on Sunday night, and that took his tally for the season to 22, which has him in third place, behind Prasidh and Noor Ahmad of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who has 24.Of the other bowlers to still be in the fray, PBKS’ Arshdeep Singh is at No. 7 with 18 wickets after going wicketless against MI.And here are some other IPL 2025 tables that show the season’s best performers in different aspects of the T20 game.
