Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp should tell Bobby Duncan to work harder for his chance

According to The Daily Mail, Liverpool youngster Bobby Duncan has grown concerned about his chances of breaking into Jurgen Klopp’s senior set-up at Anfield.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the 18-year-old shone for the Under-18 side last term, smashing in 32 goals for the academy team.

Duncan, who is the cousin of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, also scored a long-range screamer in the FA Youth Cup final against his old side Manchester City to help the Reds lift the trophy.

Alongside 21-goal Paul Glatzel up front, the teenager enjoyed an outstanding campaign and looks to have been given his chance in pre-season to show Klopp what he can do – he didn’t get off to a bad start with a goal in the 6-0 win over Tranmere.

Borussia Dortmund, however, are said to be keeping tabs on the 5 foot 7 forward’s situation if he continues to be concerned about his chances.

He simply needs to knuckle down and work hard

How is it that we have got to a stage in football where 18-year-old footballers are becoming concerned about their chances of breaking into the first-team, when they have only ever had one full season in the academy side like Duncan has?

If Duncan knocks on Klopp’s door and says that he wants first-team football because Dortmund want him, the German should say to the teenager that he needs to get his head down and impress him in training, or he can forget about an opportunity in the senior set-up.

What is Duncan worried about? He has more than enough time on his side, and Klopp has already shown that he is willing to trust his youngsters instead of taking a dip into the transfer market with his show of faith in Rhian Brewster.

The 32-goal striker needs to prove to Klopp in training that he is deserving of a chance.

Manchester United: Marcos Rojo set to leave Old Trafford this summer

Marcos Rojo is set to leave Manchester United before Thursday’s 5pm deadline after the club’s deal for Harry Maguire, according to Starsport.

[ad_pod ]

Everton are one of the clubs linked with a move for the Argentina international, as they look to replace Kurt Zouma, who returned to Chelsea after last season.

The Old Trafford giants want a fee in the region of £25m for the Argentine defender, who has three years left on his current contract.

Maguire completed a move to Manchester United from Leicester City for a world record fee believed to be £80m.

After the signing of Maguire, a move away from Manchester United would be the best thing possible for both the club and Rojo. The north-west club extended the contracts of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones last season, and also have Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly as centre-back options. Indeed, it shows that Rojo would be far down the pecking order.

He endured a horrible spell last season as he made just eight appearances in all competitions. The lack of appearances came down to the 29-year-old’s injuries, which saw him miss 149 days and 19 games.

After the acquisition of Maguire, the club possesses the options to be able to deal with the sale of the Argentine.

Rojo himself has come under fire during his Manchester United career from his own teammates for his tough tackling. Left-back Luke Shaw was very vocal of Rojo’s tackling, saying players would often stay away from the defender due to his habits.

A mixture of injuries, defensive options and bad habits means Rojo leaving the club would be the best thing possible for all parties involved. The Argentine will find his game time limited, and even when he does play, his crunching tackles means he could be a liability.

Manchester City guilty of bad decision-making with Douglas Luiz

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

As confirmed on the club’s official website, Douglas Luiz has left Manchester City to join fellow Premier League side Aston Villa in a reported £15m deal.

What’s the word?

The 21-year-old joined City from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama back in 2017 but failed to make a single appearance for the side in his time at the Etihad.

Work permit issues meant that Luiz spent the last two seasons on loan at Girona in Spain and made 46 appearances for the club. After having a work permit application turned down last August, Luiz leaves City without ever making a mark on the side.

A complete waste

Having signed a five-year contract at the Etihad, there were high hopes for what Luiz could have achieved at City. Indeed, speaking at the announcement of his signing back in July 2017, the Manchester side’s director of football Txiki Begiristain said: “We are pleased to welcome Douglas. He is an exciting player with great potential, and everyone here is looking forward to helping him develop his talent and progress in the game.”

Instead, the man signed in a £10.7m deal leaves the Etihad with barely anything to show for it. Should City have foreseen this very situation transpiring back in 2017? Of course in hindsight it is easy to point fingers, but for the club the stature of City, not recognising the potential pitfalls of bringing in a teenager from Brazil with all the rules and regulations surrounding the game right now feels a little perplexing.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

Indeed, speaking last summer after City’s work permit application was rejected, Pep Guardiola said: “It’s so difficult for me to understand. One guy who doesn’t see the player or any training sessions every day has to judge if [Douglas] has the ability and quality to play.

“I accept the rules but I don’t understand. I am so sad and disappointed for Douglas, because he could help us.”

Whilst the club have seemingly made a tidy profit on a player that didn’t even end up playing for them, the biggest disappointment on the whole however should surely be at how City have let such a situation to develop. It’s negligent at best and a total mishap at worst.

Newcastle fans blast Martin Atkinson appointment for Arsenal clash

[ad_pod ]

Martin Atkinson has been named as the referee for Newcastle United’s opening match of the 2019-20 Premier League season.

Indeed, Atkinson will be the man in the middle when the Magpies welcome Arsenal to St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

The experienced official also took charge of Newcastle’s league opener last season, when the Magpies suffered a 2-1 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 48-year-old also refereed the Community Shield between Manchester City and Liverpool on Sunday, which Pep Guardiola’s side won on penalties.

Atkinson – who will be assisted by the likes of Lee Betts and Constantine Hatzidakis on Tyneside – is a very, very experienced match official.

However, the news that he will be in charge of the clash between Newcastle and Arsenal has not gone down well with Magpies fans.

Indeed, many have taken to social media to blast the decision.

Newcastle fans fume at Allardyce admission

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to a shocking admission from Sam Allardyce, who claims he has rejected an offer to take charge of the club for a second time.

Allardyce stood in the St. James’ Park dugout for eight months between 2007 and 2008, winning just eight of 24 games in charge.

Now, with the club in total disarray, the 64 year-old has revealed he was contacted about returning to Tyneside.

“I was very flattered that I was considered but it’s that thing… don’t go back,” Big Sam told talkSPORT.

“It never got to the type of talks people are suggesting but it wasn’t for me. I politely said ‘no’.

“I never got to talk to Mike Ashley. My agent contacted me, I had a think about it and a quick look at the situation and thanked them very much but it’s not for me.

“Maybe if it was the first time around I would have jumped at it. I appreciate the offer but I was surprised, I’ve not worked for a full season.”

Understandably, this hasn’t gone down too well with the Toon Army, who are now convinced Ashley is simply “trolling” them.

Steve Bruce is expected to be the man to replace Rafael Benitez, per The Telegraph, and that potential appointment hasn’t exactly gone down well either.

Whether Bruce takes over or not though, the fact that Allardyce was even considered for the role has fans absolutely fuming on Twitter, and you can find some of the best reactions down below…

Championship Transfer Roundup: Leeds eye Gibson, Baggies close to Furlong, QPR want Sterling

[ad_pod ]

Yesterday’s Championship transfer roundup consisted of Leeds’ interest in a French defender, West Brom’s eyes on a Sporting Lisbon winger and Fulham’s completed loan move for a Premier League forward. Today’s edition is made up of the Whites’ pursuit of a top-tier 26-year-old, the Baggies closing in on a deal for a rival full-back and QPR’s short-term move for a Chelsea youngster.

Leeds want Gibson

Since signing for Burnley last August for a joint-record fee, things have not gone well for Ben Gibson. In the past season, he played just five games in all competitions for the Clarets, which was partly down to him missing three months through injury. The 26-year-old could be on the move this summer, and Leeds are interested in taking the former Middlesbrough centre-back to Elland Road according to The Northern Echo. Marcelo Bielsa is not the only one who would like to get his hands on the Gibson, though. Newcastle, Aston Villa, Norwich City and Sheffield are also mentioned.

Furlong close to West Brom move

So far during his tenure as West Brom boss, Slaven Bilic has brought in three new faces, with Benfica’s Filip Krovinovic being joined more recently by Kenneth Zohore and Semi Ajayi. And there may be soon be a fourth, according to The Express and Star. They are reporting that the Baggies are close to the signing of QPR’s Darrell Furlong. The Midlands outfit will pay £1.5m for the 23-year-old, with his arrival allowing Allan Nyom to complete a move to Spanish club Getafe.

QPR to bring in Sterling

With Furlong therefore expected to be leaving Loftus Road soon, a new right-back would not go amiss for the Rs. Fortunately, they may plug that hole in their defence imminently. According to The Independent, Dujon Sterling is close to completing a loan move from Chelsea to the Hoops. The 19-year-old will stay with Mark Warburton’s side for the duration of the 2019/20 campaign, where he will most likely get more opportunities than at Stamford Bridge. The Blues already have Cesar Azpilicueta, Davide Zappacosta and Reece James in his position.

Rangers fans are in hysterics at Jermain Defoe’s latest goal

[ad_pod ]

Jermain Defoe scored the fourth and final goal in a devastating 4-0 rout over Marseille on Sunday, and the Rangers fans can’t quite believe what they saw from the 36-year-old striker in the pre-season friendly.

Defoe’s strike was unusual in that the former Spurs and Portsmouth poacher managed to convert Sheyi Ojo’s sumptuous cross with his head, stooping low to glance home. That didn’t stop him hilariously calling it a “towering header” on Twitter though.

The 5 foot 6 striker is far from renowned for scoring headers – Transfermarkt make this latest strike just his seventh career headed goal – and the Rangers faithful are fully aware they witnessed something of a collector’s item at Ibrox on Sunday.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

Defoe has netted eight goals at Ibrox since arriving in January and his pre-season form has been brilliant, giving his manager Steven Gerrard a lot to think about.

Last season Alfredo Morelos was Gerrard’s clear first-choice striker, but with rumours he could be leaving, Defoe is stepping up and showing how important he can be for the Gers going forward.

Here’s what the Rangers fans had to say after Defoe’s peculiar header on Twitter…

West Brom make initial enquiry for Tottenham striker Janssen

[ad_pod ]

This is a special report containing information gained from FFC sources, unless stated otherwise.

West Bromwich Albion have made an initial enquiry for Tottenham Hotspur striker Vincent Janssen, sources have told Football FanCast.

The forward is deemed expendable by Spurs’ management, having made just three substitute appearances in the Premier League last season.

West Brom attempted to sign Janssen in 2017, with reports at the time claiming that manager Tony Pulis could complete a £15m deal.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He ultimately chose to move to Fenerbahce on loan but the Baggies are now attempting to again secure the Dutchman’s signature.

There is a willingness at Spurs to move Janssen on, though it would leave them with just Harry Kane as their out-and-out forward option.

The move, sources have said, is at an exploratory stage, with negotiations yet to begin.

Per Spotrac, Janssen earns £34,000-per-week and one figure within Spurs believes that the Baggies would have no problem matching such demands.

The Netherlands international’s contract expires at the end of next season and Spurs are not likely to demand an exorbitant fee for a player who has scored just six senior goals for the club. It remains to be seen, however, if he would want to step down to the Championship.

FFC also understands that Spurs are set to sell Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid for a fee of £20m, with the England international nearing a move to the Spanish capital.

Such a move could see Juan Foyth installed as a right-back, with right-back target Max Aarons poised to be offered a new contract at Norwich City.
