Five Players Spurs want to sign before August 8th

After a successful 2018/19 campaign, during which they reached the Champions League final, Tottenham will be looking to progress next time out. With Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke already signed, some good business has been done, but there is still time to add more quality to an already impressive squad. Here, we look at five players Spurs could bring in before the end of the transfer window…

Giovani Lo Celso has not been at Real Betis for very long since joining from PSG, but he could be on the move again this summer, with Tottenham chasing the Argentina international’s signature. It is being reported that the 23-year-old is closing in on a move to North London in a switch that will cost Spurs €60m (£53.9m). The midfielder scored 16 goals for the Seville-based outfit last season, which is not to be sniffed at.

The last few years have been difficult for Italy, with their failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup particularly disappointing. The Azzurri are in need of new stars and, fortunately for them, they may have found one in AS Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo. The question is, for how long will he be at the Stadio Olimpico? Tottenham are interested in taking the 20-year-old to the Premier League, and are said to have even made an offer of €27m plus defender Toby Alderweireld for the midfielder. That was a week ago, and as of yet nothing has been confirmed, so there is clearly still a fair way to go.

Fulham may have been relegated from the Premier League last season, but it seems unlikely that Ryan Sessegnon will be a Championship player once the new campaign kicks off. It is even being reported that the 19-year-old is closing in on a move to Spurs. There is believed to have been a breakthrough between the two clubs, with Daniel Levy and co expected to pay £20m plus add-ons for the teenager. Sessegnon has already made it clear to his club that he does not intend to sign a new contract.

Gareth Bale is already a hero at Tottenham thanks to his performances for the club before his move to Real Madrid. He has succeeded in Spain as well, scoring over 100 goals and lifting 14 trophies with Los Merengues. However, it seems his time at the Bernabeu is coming to an end, especially after Zinedine Zidane’s recent comments. Spurs have previously shown interest in taking the 30-year-old back to the Premier League, and Mauricio Pochettino has refused to rule out a move for the Wales international. Should this one be completed, it would be a hard deal to top.

Leeds United were very close promotion to promotion to the Premier League last season, losing to Derby County in the Championship play-off semi-finals. Kalvin Phillips was one of the players who contributed to their impressive performances, and Tottenham have sat up and taken notice. It had been reported that Spurs were planning a second raid on the Elland Road outfit following the capture of Jack Clarke, and they were said to be willing to offer the 23-year-old a hefty increase on his £10,000-a-week salary. There has been no development in the last couple of days, however.

Celtic fans delighted by signing of midfielder Luca Connell

[ad_pod ]

Celtic have completed the signing of Luca Connell from Bolton Wanderers on a four-year deal, the club announced on Saturday.

The Republic of Ireland youth international joins the Hoops after contract problems at his previous club, with the BBC reporting that while he was set to cost just £250,000, Celtic have paid substantially more to the financially stricken outfit.

Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

Connell made the breakthrough at Bolton last season, making 12 first-team appearances between January and May.

The teenager showed good enough form to included in a recent senior Republic of Ireland training camp, with assistant manager Robbie Keane revealing he was on the verge of being included in their squad for June qualifiers if not for injury.

Competition in the middle of the park is fierce at Celtic, but with Connell recently insisting he would only join a club if he had the chance of playing, it appears he’ll be earmarked to compete with Hoops regulars despite being just 18 years of age.

Maxi Gomez wants West Ham move

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Maxi Gomez wants to move to West Ham United but the Hammers face competition for his signature, per Sky Sports.

What’s the word?

The club have been attempting to sign the striker throughout the summer, with Football FanCast sources understanding that Director of Football Mario Husillos remains in lengthy negotiations with the Spanish club.

And the new report claims that the Uruguay international is keen on the move.

Sky claim that a fee of £29m has already been agreed but that personal terms have yet to be agreed.

That tallies with a separate FFC report, as the club are looking to shift the likes of Javier Hernandez from the wage bill as they look to finance new signings.

Valencia, per Sky, are also interested, but are struggling to finance the swoop.

A necessary signing

West Ham really need to get this one over the line.

Gomez scored 13 goals in 35 La Liga appearances last season and the Hammers are desperately short in the striking department.

Lucas Perez and Andy Carroll have already left the club, while Chicharito could also leave and Marko Arnautovic is the subject of interest from China.

It is conceivable, then, that the Irons could lose all four of the strikers that made up their forward department last season in this transfer window.

A deal for Gomez, then, must be a top priority.

FFC understands that manager Manuel Pellegrini has specifically requested the deal be done and Husillos remains in talks with the Spanish club. He must beat Valencia to the punch.

Manchester United stars Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku pictured together amid transfer speculation

Romelu Lukaku is yet to learn his new home with transfer negotiations taking another twist.

Despite interest from Inter Milan, Serie A giants Juventus are the favourites to sign the forward in a deal which would see Paulo Dybala move the other way, with some papers suggesting that the two clubs have already come to an agreement.

In the meantime, Lukaku, to his credit, has remained professional. Not once has he gone to the media crying about how life isn’t fair, conducted a dirty protest, or taken Ed Woodward hostage in an effort to force through a move.

In fact, on the rare occasion that we see Lukaku in action, it’s usually via one of his teammates’ social media accounts. And on this occasion, that honour has fallen to Alexis Sanchez:

Both players weren’t included in the squad that faced Kristiansund earlier in the week, and while Lukaku’s omission is understandable, Sanchez’s may hint where his future lies. Although, while both player and club agree that his time is up at Old Trafford, no offers have been received for the 30-year-old, as per The Sun.

With a week left of the transfer window remaining, however, Woodward and Solskjaer will need to act quick if they want to shift both stars and come good on an earlier promise.

Arsenal may be forced into transfer action as Everton ready Wilfried Zaha bid

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Everton are reportedly poised to make a bid for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, according to Sky Sports, which could force Premier League rivals Arsenal into action.

What’s the word then?

Zaha wants to leave Palace and test himself at a new club and Everton and Arsenal are the two sides to have shown interest.

The Gunners made a bid of £40m which was rejected by the south Londoners, and now the Toffees are expected to make a bid in the region of £60m plus a player for the ex-Manchester United man.

His preference is to remain in London and sign for Arsenal, but he is willing to move back to the North-West despite an unsuccessful spell under David Moyes in Manchester during the 2013-14 campaign.

Crystal Palace are understood to value their asset at £80m.

Everton bid forces Arsenal’s hands

Everton’s bid suggests there’s competition for Arsenal that they didn’t have before, and while the extra demand should make it harder for the Gunners to secure their man, there’s another perspective to this which is far more positive.

It’s surprising enough as it is that thus far no other club has come to tempt Palace to selling their star man until the Everton interest. Arsenal may have been resting on their laurels, and now have no choice but to make a quick decision on how they want to persist with the Zaha transfer.

They seem reluctant to match Palace’s valuation of £80m with the reported limited budget they have, though Kaveh Solhekol at Sky Sports News believes this is a “smokescreen”.

Check out 4 things Unai Emery got wrong in his first season at Arsenal in the video below…

This will now start to truly unveil the nature of the Gunners’ financial mite as they’re to be forced into a decision: do you have the money or not? If the answer is ultimately “no”, then other targets can be approached. Likewise, the answer may be “yes”, but the follow-up question regards whether the majority of the budget should be spent on one winger when “three or four” players need to be recruited this summer, according to Unai Emery himself.

Clarity is yet to be reached here, no one quite knows what Arsenal’s transfer strategy is and how they’ll respond to Everton’s move for Zaha. However, they’ll now be forced to decide whether the winger really is the ‘number one’ target they’re seeking, or whether spreading the fees over deals for Kieran Tierney, Everton Soares and other linked players might be a better use of the cash.

Arsenal fans react to interest in Kieran Tierney alternative

[ad_pod ]

The search for a new defender at Arsenal continues. Unai Emery’s side have seemingly been on the hunt for some defensive reinforcements for the entire summer, but have seen their attempts so far fail to come to fruition.

Reports in recent weeks had suggested the Gunners were very much interested in Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney and had seen a bid in the region of £15m turned down for the Scotland international.

Now, The Daily Record claim the north London club have “baulked” at Celtic’s £25m valuation of the defender and that has led to them keeping tabs on Milan left-back Ricardo Rodriguez – reportedly available for £14m.

After hearing the news their team could be trying to tie up a deal for a cheaper alternative to Tierney, Gunners fans took to Twitter to voice their discontent about their side’s transfer planning.

Many Arsenal supporters felt stunned that the club were even contemplating settling for anyone other than Tierney, and labelled it “embarrassing” that £25m was deemed to be too much.

Indeed, some admitted that a move for Rodriguez would represent a significant drop in quality and felt that they would actually be better off sticking with what they already had at the Emirates.

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen refuses to be drawn on future

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has refused to be drawn on his future, per Football.London.

What’s the word?

The Belgium international’s current contract expires at the end of next season, the report states.

The same situation applies to Toby Alderweireld, his central defensive partner, with both Belgium internationals potentially able to walk away for nothing following the end of the 2019/20 campaign, per the piece.

And Vertonghen has refused to confirm whether or not he will be signing fresh terms at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He said: “I just want to focus on this year. I know I’ve got one year left so lots of questions will be asked, like now.

“I’ve said it before, I’m very happy at the club. The support has been great for me and the manager has improved me a lot and has a lot of confidence in me and I feel very, very good physically.

“I’m not sure what’s going to happen this year, I can only say that I’m happy where I’m at and I feel the support from the manager and my teammates and the supporters.”

Needed a straight answer

This might send a few Spurs fans into meltdown.

Christian Eriksen’s contract also expires at the end of next season, opening the door to the former Ajax trio all leaving for absolutely nothing.

It would be a catastrophe for the club, particularly given that they are all still at the top of their game, and really, many supporters will have wanted to hear a straight answer from Vertonghen.

[ad_pod ]

While it is encouraging to hear him claim that he is happy in north London, he could have at least pointed towards his desire to pen fresh terms.

Those at the club now face an anxious wait to see whether or not he will commit himself, and whether his team-mates will follow suit.

If not, next summer could become rather messy.

Fulham keen to receive a Spurs player in exchange for Sessegnon

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Fulham are keen to receive a Tottenham Hotspur player in exchange for Ryan Sessegnon, per the London Evening Standard.

What’s the word?

The 19-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs in this transfer window.

Indeed, reports claim that he has his heart set on a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as he is keen to work under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

However, a deal has not yet been agreed for the teenager, with Spurs so far completing two transfers: Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke.

And the Standard now claims that is due to Fulham’s desire to take a player from the north London club, though no specific name is mentioned.

However, the newspaper reports that Vincent Janssen, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, Marcus Edwards and Joshua Onomah are all for sale.

Get this deal done

Spurs have not included Danny Rose in their pre-season tour party, with reports suggesting that he could leave the club this summer.

As such, they have just Ben Davies as their senior left-back option and a deal for Sessegnon has gained added importance with stories of the England international departing gaining momentum.

Spurs can’t afford to enter the season with just one left-back, meaning a deal for Sessegnon is absolutely vital.

He can play at full-back or on the wing and would add an extra dimension to the club’s defence if he completes his move from Craven Cottage.

As long as the player isn’t a starter, chairman Daniel Levy should acquiesce to Fulham’s demands as he looks to secure Spurs’ third signing of the summer.

West Ham fans love club’s dig at Arnautovic

[ad_pod ]West Ham United have posted a rather unsubtle dig at Marko Arnautovic following his exit from the club, to the delight of fans. The Austria international completed his move to Shanghai SIPG on Monday. The club announced this via Twitter and followed that tweet with a picture of captain Mark Noble, and the accompanying words: “True Hammerâ€.

And fans are convinced that the second tweet is a dig at the former Stoke City man, who also asked to leave the club in January.

A deal has eventually been reached for a fee of £22.5m, Football FanCast sources understand, with the Hammers accepting a hit on the deal as they were so desperate to move the striker on.

Indeed, Noble has spent a total of 15 years at the Hammers, playing for the club 467 times.

And supporters love the shade being thrown by the Irons on social media.
