West Brom: Isaac Hayden can be everything Stefan Johansen couldn’t be

It’s safe to say that not all of West Brom’s ambitious January signings worked out well.

Indeed, Jacob Murphy and Jefferson Montero have had mixed results, but Stefan Johansen’s loan move isn’t going according to plan.

The centre-midfielder was surely signed to bring sparks to the Baggies’ pretty drab midfield but he’s been unable to do much on the creative front. Despite having assisted two goals and scored one in nine appearances, he’s mostly been quite lacklustre and looks a shell of the player who helped take Fulham to the Premier League. Johansen’s been unable to be the influential figure West Brom were hoping for, as someone more effective is needed to spark up their game next season.

The Baggies must be looking at options and Isaac Hayden’s comments to the Newcastle United official website suggesting he’d be keen on a move down south, they must act after previously being reported to hold an interest by John Percy of the Telegraph in January.

Despite his unhappiness off the field, the former Arsenal midfielder’s been a breakout star for the Magpies, putting in some bright performances against superior opposition. Clearly a technically gifted midfielder and one mobile enough to get all around the pitch, he’d be a breath of fresh air at the Hawthorns.

Not only has Hayden, who is valued at £6.3 million (by Transfermarkt), assisted three goals and scored one, but he’s also been pivotal in finding space for his attackers to diligently creating chances. He’s created four big goal-scoring chances while maintaining a 50% crossing accuracy and giving 16 accurate long-balls. Despite having to operate more defensively, Hayden’s recorded a 57% tackling success and made 32 interceptions (stats via Premier League) to win possession, urging his side forward.

Alongside Jake Livermore, the 24-year-old can revitalise a midfield that often looks so painfully stodgy.

He can be the complete package for West Brom’s midfield. In need of an energetic, box-to-box midfielder who can drive them forward and also win possession, the Baggies need to make a statement by outbidding Hayden’s suitors and securing his signature next season.

Man City should look to give Adrian Bernabe a chance during pre-season

This is beginning to get really frustrating, isn’t it? Liverpool just won’t let up and Manchester City are having to work magnificently hard for their second successive Premier League title. Why can’t life supporting the Sky Blues be easy, right?

Despite their form being impeccable since the turn of the year, City just can’t shake Liverpool as they remain the only side to have beaten them in the league this season.

Still, Man City obviously remain in with a chance at securing a domestic treble, something that would only further demonstrate how good Pep and his players are, so it’s not as if everything is a complete disaster.

Now focus is completely on that but this summer, with a big budget sure to be available, maybe the Citizens should first examine their youth prospects.

Attacking-midfielder Adrian Bernabe is someone that be of amazing use for City’s first team and Pep Guardiola should seriously consider giving him a chance during pre-season.

Bernabe is a youngster that has thrived in the development system, so much so, he could be of use to the first-team sooner than expected. Previously of Barcelona, his pedigree already shows why Adrian Bernabe is blessed with such excellence on the ball and it’s now only a matter of time before Pep Guardiola notices.

The 17-year-old managed to play in the EFL Cup this season but for the rest of the season, his time has been spent with the U23’s, where he has three goals and six assists.

Man City already have a number of seriously creative players in their team and Adrian Bernabe would only add to that, if given the chance to shine in pre-season.

Pep is clearly a fan of giving his youngsters the chance to show what they’re all about so why not give Adrian Bernabe that same opportunity this summer?

Liverpool: Julian Brandt is the Philippe Coutinho replacement Jurgen Klopp should be going for

It seems weird to remember there was a time Philippe Coutinho played for Liverpool.

The Brazilian superstar, who was sold to Barcelona last January for a reported fee £142 million, was meant to be a sale that damaged Liverpool in the long-run and hamper their chances of Premier League glory, yet over a year later and the situation couldn’t be any different.

Whilst Coutinho continues to struggle in La Liga, Liverpool have had one of their best seasons ever in the Premier League as Jurgen Klopp leads to current league table ahead of Manchester City with five games to go, and things could be getting even better for the Reds.

According to BILD, Liverpool are interested in bringing in Julian Brandt to Merseyside this summer by activating his £21.5 million release clause, with Juventus also interested in the 22-year-old playmaker.

With Coutinho constantly linked with a move back to Liverpool, it makes sense why the Reds would be tempted to bring back their former superstar, but if Klopp is to play it smart, the German manager should be bringing in the Bayer Leverkusen player instead.

At this moment in time, Brandt is making Coutinho look like a schoolboy as the Brazilian has struggled to even get a look in at Barcelona and wouldn’t even be considered for an Anfield return with Brandt in the picture. Indeed, the youngster has produced seven goals and 14 assists this season opposed to Coutinho’s 10 goals and five assists, and the crazy thing is that the Bayern Leverkusen man has played eight less games.

Coutinho has lost his magic touch and Brandt appears to have gained it.

At just over £20 million, Brandt would be a bargain for the club, something Liverpool have been brilliant at over the past few seasons with Klopp, and at the young age of 22, the playmaker has plenty of time to develop into a better player than he already is.

His versatility to play as a number 10 as well as a winger makes Brandt a player who Klopp could get a lot of use out of for the fee Liverpool will be paying for him, meaning he can slot in for any system and formation utilised by the German manager.

Coutinho returning to Anfield might seem like a fairytale story, but the reality is that Liverpool needs to move on from their player and realise that Brandt is the one who Klopp should be going for.

Leeds United: Malik Wilks is the perfect replacement for embarrassing Bamford

What an embarrassment Patrick Bamford was at the weekend. His theatrics were about as much as we saw of him against Aston Villa, and many fans must be calling for him to leave. With that in mind, Malik Wilks would be the perfect replacement.

The 20-year-old is on loan at Doncaster in League One and he’s shone this season. He’s scored 16 goals and made nine assists in all competitions. He offers the complete opposite to Bamford and that’d be a breath of fresh air at Elland Road.

He’s consistent in front of goal and offers pace mixed with a hunger and desire to help the team. Wouldn’t that be nice?

That’s exactly what Marcelo Bielsa is looking for in a forward, having rued missed chances this season. Famously, his system obviously needs a high-energy striker to create spaces for his attacking midfielders to exploit.

When his loan ends in the summer, he should be tried and tested on the pre-season tour and then given an opportunity in the first-team to see if he can better Bamford’s efforts.

Frankly, that wouldn’t be hard considering some of his recent performances.

He’d be given more patience by the Leeds fans, and knows exactly what it means to pull on that white strip. His work rate would get Elland Road on its feet alone, nevermind his goal-scoring record. He’d be perfect if Leeds don’t secure promotion this season.

Bamford just hasn’t been good enough in this key part of the campaign to warrant a secure place in next season starting 11. Bringing in Wilks would add more excitement and dynamism to a side that’s on the brink of making history.

The Verdict: Should Spurs sell Danny Rose?

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose has admitted that he could leave this summer, per The Guardian.

The left-back has enjoyed a stellar season under Mauricio Pochettino but he has claimed that there is a possibility that he could depart the club when the transfer window reopens.

After helping Spurs to the Champions League final, where they will play Liverpool, he said: “I keep seeing my name that I’m being sold, so if that’s the case and it’s going to be my last game for Tottenham against Liverpool, I’m hoping to go out with a bang and lift a trophy.

“It’s a Champions League final so individual situations have to take a back seat and you have to put the club first. We are going to do that. We do realise we have a chance to make history.”

Should Spurs be considering his sale, though? Football FanCast’s writers have their say below!

Matt Dawson

“Before Spurs’ victory over Ajax in the Champions League, I’d have said the club could afford to let Danny Rose go. However, in Amsterdam, he showed what a fantastic player he can be and as a result, Tottenham must do all they can to keep him at the club. Pochettino will need big game players going forward and the full-back certainly showed he can step up to the plate when needed. With Ben Davies not really showing too much this season, his importance only becomes more elevated.”

Billy Meyers

“As it stands, Spurs can’t afford to lose Danny Rose. The England international is a solid, reliable performer who would be very hard to replace, and his backup in Ben Davies simply isn’t good enough for a club with aspirations as lofty as Mauricio Pochettino’s. Unless a marquee name is being lined up at left-back, Rose must be kept at all costs.”

Jack Saville

“Danny Rose is up there with the best left-backs in world football on his day. Daniel Levy would be a fool to cash in on his most talented full-back in a summer when a handful of Spurs players are looking likely to move on. The manner in which he has bounced back from a serious injury and mental health problems proves he is an invaluable role model for aspiring first-team stars residing in Tottenham’s academy, so Pochettino must do everything in his power to convince him to stay.”

The Chalkboard: Why Sheffield United will be fine without Egan and Basham

[ad_pod ]

Sheffield United will be short of two key men heading into their next game against Nottingham Forest as John Egan misses out due to suspension and Chris Basham is almost certainly going to be absent with an injury, per The Star.

Broken back line

The Yorkshire club’s back three have been unbelievable this season. The Blades have conceded only 39 goals this season making their defence the best in the Championship.

Chris Wilder rarely strays from his favoured trio of Egan, Basham and Jack O’Connell and that has been the winning formula this season.

The United defence is about so much more than keeping goals out though, as Basham and O’Connell are given the freedom to burst forward and create opportunities in the final third.

Basham averages 0.8 key passes per game which is an anomaly for centre backs in the division – the 30-year-old is one of Sheffield United’s most potent attacking threats as well as being a rock at the back.

John Egan, on the other hand, plays the role of the middle centre-back in the back three and his role is much more strict as he doesn’t venture forward like his centre-back partners.

All is not lost

Luckily for the Blades, they have two ready-made replacements in the shape of Martin Cranie and Richard Stearman.

Cranie can bring the attacking threat and carry the ball out of defence just as well as Basham. The 32-year-old has played that role brilliantly in his 13 appearances so far this season and his assist for Kieron Dowell at the Hawthorns in February highlighted his attacking prowess.

Cranie provides brilliant cover as a ball playing defender and can slot in perfectly as Basham’s replacement for the next few weeks.

Watch the moment Sheffield United’s promotion hopes were dealt a major blow by Millwall in the video below…

Stearman will have to play Egan’s role, which does make United’s back line somewhat weaker. Stearman doesn’t possess the quality that Egan does but the Blades can count themselves lucky that Egan will only miss the game against Forest.

Martin O’Neill’s side have only netted six goals in their previous six games so Egan shouldn’t be missed too much in a game where Stearman shouldn’t be threatened too much.

TT Battle: Sean Longstaff vs James Ward-Prowse

Newcastle vs Southampton is BT Sport’s televised clash today, with the two bottom half clubs meeting at St James Park as they aim to climb the table. The two clubs have some very impressive players kicking about, and here we’ll be comparing two English midfielders in Sean Longstaff and James Ward-Prowse as they both have huge futures.

Before we get into it, Sean Longstaff is injured and has been for the last few weeks. He will miss this clash and the rest of the season, but should he make it back to fitness for next season and get back to form it will be a matter of time before he’s giving Gareth Southgate selection headaches. One of the players he’ll be battling against for an England spot will be Saints’ James Ward-Prowse, though, who will certainly feature later today.

SEAN LONGSTAFF

Sean Longstaff has shown everyone what he can do in his very short time as a Newcastle United senior player. Before he suffered his injury, there were fans calling for him to be an England player, and who can blame them? The 21-year-old former Blackpool loanee is an incredible youngster with plenty of fight, passion and energy in the middle of the park, with some stellar displays to go with his potential.

If you want to see the best of the young Geordie, just look back to Newcastle’s home clash with Manchester City. Between them, Isaac Hayden and Longstaff shone as they outclassed a Pep Guardiola midfield of David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho. That says all you need to know, and all the Newcastle fans want is to see Longstaff return as soon as possible and get back to form next season as he continues to convince England fans he deserves to be in Southgate’s squad.

TT GRADE: A

JAMES WARD-PROWSE

At the age of 24-years-old, James Ward-Prowse is one of the oldest players to still be considered as a young prospect, and he has been considered so for a long time. However, the Southampton man has got bags of talent that he’s started to utilise under the tutelage of Ralph Hasenhuttl and if he keeps going the way he is then maybe a big money move and a chance with the Three Lions could present itself.

This season has seen the midfield man score six Premier League goals for the Saints, his highest tally since becoming a regular starter back in the 2013/14 season. The only problem is that the midfielder hasn’t got an assist this season and his creative output can be questioned. That could be a key point in whether or not Ward-Prowse gets an international nod, and it will be something that Hasenhuttl will be working on with the impressive midfield maestro.

TT GRADE: C

TT VERDICT

Whilst it could be the case that with so many impressive midfielders coming through with England that neither Ward-Prowse or Longstaff get a look in for the national side, you’d back at least one of them to do so.

Gareth Southgate will have his eye on both, but with age on his side and some bright performances under his belt already, when Longstaff gets back to fitness he will surely be the more likely of the two.
