The Chalkboard: Wide play will be key for Man United in crucial West Ham clash

[ad_pod ]

Since sending French champions Paris Saint-Germain flying out of the UEFA Champions League, Manchester United have just one win in five and are well and truly in a slump under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, there’s one key area they can exploit to return to form against West Ham United on Saturday evening.

United’s recent downfall

The latest disappointing result in this torrid five-match streak arrived for the Red Devils on Wednesday night, the Champions League round-of-16 first-leg defeat to Barcelona.

On that night, United’s main downfall was largely attributed by fans as being their wing-backs and the system that allowed those players to operate in those roles.

On the right side was club captain Ashley Young and he was fiercely hounded on social media post-match for his questionable performance against the high quality of the Spanish champions.

Meanwhile, despite not doing too badly in an unfamiliar role, Diogo Dalot on the other flank missed a huge chance that could have changed the whole course of the match in the first half.

However, as tempting as it may be for Solskjaer to change things up in this department for Saturday evening’s visit of Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham to Old Trafford he must stick to his guns with the wing-backs.

The secret to smashing the Hammers – their big weakness

By giving his side as much width as possible in using wing-backs once more, the new permanent boss in Manchester would be exploiting the Irons’ biggest defensive weakness and utilising the secret to smashing the Hammers – the wide areas.

Pellegrini has rotated his full-backs constantly this season and just as it started to look like a stable partnership of Aaron Cresswell on the left and Ryan Fredericks on the right was forming, they’ve both entered a run of poor form.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Waiting in the wings to replace either of them after sub-par displays at Chelsea last Monday night are Pablo Zabaleta and Arthur Masuaku who are even weaker options.

The fun and games that Eden Hazard was able to enjoy against Fredericks at Stamford Bridge would inspire the young Dalot. The opposing flank represents a bigger conundrum with Young and Luke Shaw both suspended, but that only facilitates for a much more attacking option like Jesse Lingard to exploit West Ham’s big weakness.

Much of the same out wide is needed for Solskjaer in order for United to move back towards the top four.

Pundit View: Journalist claims Dummett is the Premier League’s most underrated player

[ad_pod ]

The Daily Mail have produced an article asking several of their writers for their most underrated players in the Premier League, and one has bizarrely suggested Newcastle’s Paul Dummett.

“Underrated” is a word that gets tossed about far too much in football, just like “legend”, “world class” and just about every other over-simplified term you can think of.

And The Daily Mail have proved that even their own writers don’t quite grasp the concept, with some picking the likes of Bernardo Silva and Ruben Neves as their choices, both of whom are in the running for PFA Young Player of the Year, so not exactly underrated.

One writer came from way out in left field with his suggestion though, pondering why Dummett doesn’t get more credit.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals why Tyne-Wear is a more intense derby than anything London can offer – check out the video below….

What did he say?

“I’ll go with a player who I see every week in my role as our North East man. The Newcastle defender said in an interview last season that fans always used to tell him he was ‘s****’. Not anymore,” said Craig Hope.

“When Dummett plays Newcastle look better and benefit from his assured presence.

“He is arguably the best defender at the club and, when you consider the likes of Jamaal Lascelles are valued at £20million, it shows you why he is underrated.”

Way off the mark

Where do we start with this one? First of all, the Magpies do not look better with Dummett on the pitch.

In fact, most of the best performances this season have come with Rafael Benitez’s typical three-at-the-back system, a formation that rarely accommodates the Welsh international.

He is also nowhere near the club’s best defender, a title surely reserved for Florian Lejeune, while Lascelles and Fabian Schar will feel they deserve a mention too.

Dummett is a fan favourite on Tyneside and for good reason. He is tough, passionate and versatile enough to help the team in a number of ways.

What he isn’t though is the Magpies’ best defender, or the most underrated player in the league. Quite simply, Hope has had an absolute nightmare with his verdict on this one.

Liverpool fans freak out as Oxlade-Chamberlain nears return

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Liverpool fans have been reacting to a major fitness update, as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be back in action as soon as Sunday.

Liverpool take on Cardiff City on Sunday evening, by which point Manchester City will have either reclaimed the throne at the top of the table or put the Reds’ fate firmly into their own hands.

And there could be a stunning inclusion in the match-day squad according to James Pearce, who reports that Oxlade-Chamberlain is in the conversation to make the 18.

Who has the loudest fans in Europe? PSG certainly state their claim in the video below…

According to a report from Pearce in The Liverpool Echo, Dejan Lovren is the only major doubt for the trip to Wales, having suffered with illness this week.

Oxlade-Chamberlain on the other hand could make a shock return, 12 months after he damaged his knee in the Champions League semi-final triumph over Roma.

Joe Gomez is expected to be under consideration for a place in the starting XI after returning to action in midweek against Porto, although it would be harsh to bench Joel Matip on current form.

There’s only one piece of news fans really care about though, and Pearce’s words about fan favourite “Ox” have sent Liverpool Twitter wild. Have a look at the reactions down below…

Arsenal: The players are right, Unai Emery’s squad selections are confusing

Arsenal fans were baffled, neutrals were baffled, and even the Arsenal players were baffled by Unai Emery’s squad selection.

It’s rare you hear rumblings out of a club that the players are confused by their manager’s squad choice for an important game, and if any Premier League club was to have such a story break it would be from Arsenal, and that’s exactly what’s happened.

According to the Telegraph, Arsenal players were left confused about Emery’s first-team selection for their home game against Crystal Palace that saw Mohamed Elneny partner Matteo Guendouzi in midfield with Carl Jenkinson as right-wingback.

As well as odd picks, the report also claims Arsenal players are confused with the Spaniard’s continued faith in defender Shkodran Mustafi, who has been a mainstay in the Gunners XI despite calamitous performances for the majority of his career in north London.

With Arsenal losing the last three games in the league and looking likely to miss out on Champions League football barring a Europa League triumph, the revolting players have a point about Emery’s questionable squad choices.

The Palace game should have been an easy win for Arsenal, but because of Emery’s weird experiential team, the Gunners fell to the Eagles 3-2 and squandered a golden chance to take hold of a top-four spot.

Arsenal have played themselves into a hole that will be hard to get out of, and although the players lack of a professional attitude plays as big a part as Emery’s tactics, the Spaniard’s squad selections have cost the Gunners points in the league, and it is up to him to take responsibility and own up to his mistakes and rectify them.

Arsenal fans, what would your ideal Gunners XI be? Let us know!

The Verdict: Should Southampton sign Kalvin Phillips for £20m?

[ad_pod ]

Alan Nixon has reported in The Sun (print edition 14/4, p61) that Southampton are targeting Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips this summer having been greatly impressed with the versatile midfielder’s performances for the Elland Road outfit this season.

Whether or not the Saints can bring the star to the south coast hinges on whether the Whites can secure promotion to the Premier League – should they climb out of the Championship, Phillips is categorically not for sale.

However, should they fall at the final hurdle, it is understood that Leeds will demand a fee of £20m from Southampton for the 23-year-old’s services – a hefty figure for a player from the second tier, but would it be worth it? Football FanCast’s writers give their verdicts below…

Billy Meyers

“I think £20m is a lot of money for a club of Southampton’s stature, and should definitely be spent acquiring another Championship star in Che Adams instead, a January target. Phillips is a good player, but Southampton are well stocked in midfield and in need of a quality striker.”

Matt Dawson

“The transfer market is obviously incredibly inflated at the moment but £20m+ for Kalvin Phillips would be absolutely ludicrous. He’s been hugely influential for Leeds this season but the Premier League is a considerable step up and I’d be surprised if Ralph Hasenhuttl would be willing to pay that much for someone who is still relatively unproven. However, if the price were to be lowered then I think he’d be a very astute signing for the Saints. But at the price being quoted they should stay away and look for better value elsewhere.”

Why should Southampton be more like Dortmund? Find out in the video below…

Ben Goodwin

“While it would be a devastating blow for Leeds, Kalvin Phillips would be an excellent signing for the Saints. £20m does sound like a ridiculous amount of money, but he has been one of the most influential players, if not the most, in one of the Championship’s best sides this season. At just 23, he reads the game well, plays multiple positions to a high level, has the technical quality to cut it in the top flight and of course fans will love his physicality.”

Heading for Germany? Tottenham’s Ryan Sessegnon hopes suffer a blow

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Ryan Sessegnon is ready to run down his contract with Fulham before joining Borussia Dortmund at the end of the 2019-2020 campaign.

What’s the word, then?

Tottenham Hotspur continue to be strongly linked with a swoop for Sessegnon, who starred for Fulham during their 2017-18 Championship campaign, and The Daily Mail have even described him as a key target for the north London club.

The England Under-21 international has not shown the same form in the Premier League, but has been able to gain some valuable experience of top-flight football.

At the age of 18, Sessegnon has scored 25 goals in 115 appearances for Fulham, who have already been relegated back to the Championship.

It had been thought that the teenager would leave Craven Cottage this summer, with Tottenham potentially completing a deal for the left-sided player.

However, according to The Sun, Sessegnon is ready to see out his Fulham contract – which expires in 2020 – before moving to Dortmund on a free transfer.

How will this one end?

Jadon Sancho is just one example of a young English player who has left the Premier League behind to star in Germany.

Sessegnon is certainly a talent, but is unlikely to receive too much first-team football for Tottenham next season if he makes the move to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Dortmund, on the other hand, have handed Sancho a starring role since his arrival and could be ready to offer Sessegnon similar opportunities.

Check out the video below to see how Brazil fans reacted to being asked how Cristiano Ronaldo would perform for them in a hilarious prank by Pl>ymaker FC…

The Fulham youngster might well feel that his career would be best served by playing another season of Championship football, before heading abroad for a couple of years ahead of a potential return to the Premier League.

Tottenham missed out on the chance to sign the versatile teenager last summer and could now be frustrated once again with a move to Dortmund seemingly a genuine possibility.

Celtic: Dedryck Boyata must quickly become an afterthought

The Scottish Premiership might almost be done and dusted for Celtic, but Neil Lennon now has other important work on his hands.

The interim manager’s close to getting them over the line to win another league title, but he needs to showcase his management skills in dealing with some internal problems if he’s going to stand a chance of getting the job full-time.

Dedryck Boyata’s future is quite uncertain, as he’s close to leaving Parkhead after his contract expires. According to reports from Bild, Hertha Berlin has already started negotiating a deal to sign him as a free agent. However, it’s time for the Hoops to take care of Boyata’s lack of genuine commitment.

The Belgian centre-back might be a key cog in keeping their defence impenetrable, yet they’ve managed to succeed without him this season. The Hoops have only lost three league games without him, keeping clean-sheets and putting in strong performances even when he’s missing.

While Lennon has suggested Celtic are keen on signing a new deal, they shouldn’t act desperate. As long as a promising defender is signed to replace him, they’ll be fine. But it’s now time the Scottish Champions stamp their authority by teaching him a lesson for flirting with others, a saga that has drawn on far too long.

Boyata, who is valued at £1.8 million (by Transfermarkt), should be taught a lesson for disrespecting the club for negotiating with others whilst the season goes on by being benched for the remainder of the season. It isn’t the end of the world for Celtic if the Belgian leaves, as they need to teach him and the European footballing fraternity that.

The Chalkboard: Lack of depth at Wolves needs to be addressed

[ad_pod ]

With just one win in their last six Premier League matches, could cracks be starting to appear in a Wolves team who can seemingly do no wrong?

Nuno Santo’s side have been impressive this term, there’s no doubting that, but it’s a long season and their lack of depth is now catching up on them. It’s an aspect that was particularly evident against Burnley last weekend as they lost 2-0.

No one to replace Jimenez

There’s been a considerable amount of attention surrounding Raul Jimenez lately. The Mexican has been superb for the Midlands club in 2018/19 after arriving on loan from Benfica and as such, they’re close to agreeing his permanent stay.

But a combination of more important matches to come and the fact Jimenez had clocked up plenty of air miles over the international break meant he was left out of the starting XI at Turf Moor last Saturday.

Eyebrows would have immediately been raised by Santo’s decision and with the forward having to be introduced in the second half anyway, the decision wasn’t vindicated.

Without him, there was a lack of hold up play, whilst Diogo Jota’s influence on the game was also reduced. Jimenez’s impact on this Wolves side has been significant, but it wasn’t until this weekend that we got a real glimpse of how poor they can be without him.

Depth lacking

Wolves’ form on the road hasn’t been particularly amazing this season anyway, but without Jimenez in the side at Burnley, it proved that real investment is still needed.

Ivan Cavaleiro was Jimenez’s deputy in attack on Saturday but his performance wasn’t one that will enthral fans, having just one shot in the time he was on the pitch. Helder Costa, another option in forward areas, has struggled to be the creative hub he so often was in the Championship too.

We’ve found Raul Jimenez’s No. 1 fan and… it’s a little scary. Check out the video below to see for yourself…

Andre Silva has attracted the interest of Wolves and he would certainly go a long way to bolstering their depth but they’ll need more than that.

With a potential Europa League campaign on the horizon, it’s an issue that will desperately need to be solved over the summer.
