Leave him alone: Everton fans defend Jordan Pickford after pub brawl

[ad_pod ]

Everton fans have taken to Twitter to defend Jordan Pickford, after the goalkeeper was involved in a brawl outside of a pub.

Videos online emerged of the England No.1 caught in the midst of a scuffle, although another video has shown the Sunderland academy graduate merely out enjoying himself and taking pictures with fans, only for a few individuals to throw insults and slurs towards him.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

Whilst a professional football player should conduct himself better than Pickford has in allowing himself to be wound up by the taunts, it is unfair on the 25-year-old to be subjected to this kind of stuff whilst he is simply spending time with friends and engaging with fans.

Whilst some Everton fans have called on him to be more professional, the majority of Everton supporters have defended their keeper after the incident.

Let’s see what the Toffees fanbase on Twitter have been saying about the situation…

Spurs eye brilliant double swoop for Jack Grealish and Diogo Jota

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a double summer swoop for Jack Grealish and Diogo Jota, according to the Daily Express.

The Aston Villa and Wolves stars are on Mauricio Pochettino’s shortlist as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy prepares to release funds.

What’s the word?

Spurs have not signed a player since January of 2018, when Lucas Moura moved to north London.

Grealish was a top target in the summer but Spurs failed to complete a move for the Championship star, who has been in exceptional form since returning from injury.

Indeed, he has scored two goals in four games following his comeback, including the winner in the Second City Derby against Birmingham City.

Jota, too, has enjoyed a fine season at Wolves, scoring seven goals and laying on five assists and Pochettino, per the Express, believes that he can help ease the burden on striker Harry Kane.

The Express report that Jota cost around £12.6million in January 2018, joining from Atletico Madrid.

Wolves would loathe to lose one of their best players after such an impressive debut season in the Premier League; they are currently seventh and look set to qualify for the Europa League this term.

Wonderful additions

Jota and Grealish are exactly what Spurs need.

The Wolves star is an excellent, versatile forward, equally adept at playing as a winger or as a central striker.

Grealish, too, has shown his exceptional range of talent at Villa Park and is a homegrown alternative to Denmark international Christian Eriksen, whose future remains under question.

Pochettino appears set to restructure his playing squad this summer for the first time in two seasons and starting off with attacking reinforcements is a smart move.

Kane, after all, cannot continue to shoulder the burden of scoring all the goals at White Hart Lane.

This promises to be an exciting summer for Spurs fans and players alike.

Karma! Newcastle fans mock Fulham’s relegation after unearthing 2016 tweet

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to the week’s big Premier League news, as Fulham’s relegation was confirmed.

There is just one relegation spot left up for grabs after this week’s Premier League action, as Fulham will now join Huddersfield in the second tier next season.

Scott Parker’s side were well beaten by Watford at Vicarage Road on Tuesday after losing to Manchester City at the weekend.

The Cottagers went full Football Manager mode last summer, spending huge sums of money on players no one had ever heard of, such as the £30m they splashed on Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who has started just 11 league games.

The Magpies meanwhile were forced to watch on while the likes of Wolves and Fulham went shopping all summer, with Mike Ashley being his usual self on Tyneside.

And yet, it is the Craven Cottage outfit that are going down, and Newcastle fans are rubbing it in their faces after they unearthed a tweet from 2016, in which the official Fulham account mocked the Magpies’ presence in the second tier.

Conor Hourihane says the pressure is off Aston Villa ahead of two huge fixtures

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane believes, in quotes reported by The Express & Star, that the pressure has been taken off of the club a little following recent results, but his comments are slightly surprising.

What’s the word, then?

Well, there is no doubt that it has been a disappointing campaign for the Midlands outfit, who would have been expected pre-season to be comfortably in the top six by now.

However, ahead of their trip to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night they lie four points outside of the play-off positions, thanks to two successive victories against Derby County and then arch-rivals Birmingham City on Sunday.

Speaking to The Express & Star, the Villa midfielder said: “Is the pressure off a little? Maybe so. But we expect a lot from ourselves and we have not done what we wanted to do over the course of the season.”

Confusing comment

What the Republic of Ireland international is probably trying to say is that the pressure is off of them as they chase a top-six spot rather than having to hold onto one.

However, given their stature, the players they have at their disposal and the money they have spent over the past couple of years at this level, the pressure is very much still on them.

They should be competing for the top two let alone the play-offs, and the latter should be the bare minimum they achieve this term.

That means that there is actually a weight on their shoulders to continue delivering, and positive performances and results against Forest and Boro this week would certainly help.

Aston Villa fans have split opinions over enigmatic Anwar El Ghazi

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa supporters have taken to Twitter to discuss the ability and future of Anwar El Ghazi with many fans being put off by the inconsistent nature of the Dutchman.

Followers of the Midlands club have found slight praise for him, labelling the Lille loanee as a promising player and saying that he’s shown glimpses of his technical quality.

But the negatives of El Ghazi appear to be outweighing the positives with the jury well and truly out over the enigmatic winger. The Dutchman has five goals this season but opinions are very split about whether he’d be worth investing in over the summer.

A host of fans took the time to critique the 6 foot 2 attacker, suggesting he makes the wrong decisions whilst another took the chance to call him temperamental.

The question of whether Villa will get promoted has come into focus too, as one Tweeter doubted whether he’d cut it in the Premier League. Another suggested he’d struggled in the Championship which means this is a deal the club will need to think long and hard about.

One individual assessed options aside from the former Ajax man, claiming that Nottingham Forest’s Joe Lolley, who is arguably more consistent, could be a better bet.

Here’s the best of what appears to be a mixed reaction to the player’s performances this season…

Gedson Fernandes would be an incredible coup for Manchester United

With Ole at the wheel, the legendary forward has already proven to be more than good enough to take the job permanently, something very exciting for Manchester United fans. It’s been a long time coming, though a change has come, and the Red Devils are back in business.

They desperately want him on a permanent basis and, well, why the hell wouldn’t they?! After completing a sensational league and Champions League comeback, their season is most definitely back on track as they remain in with a chance of clinching silverware this season.

Clearly, United are going some way to re-establishing themselves as one of the best footballing sides and that is all down to the impact their Norwegian coach has made. Yet, next season could prove a different challenge completely and United need to replenish their squad with some better overall players to continue this amazing run that they’re on.

One man who could do just that is Benfica’s Gedson Fernandes, a player the Red Devils should have no doubts about signing.

Fernandes, (who is valued at £19.8 million on Transfermarkt) is a player who has all the potential to succeed and play at the very highest level for a team like Manchester United.

The Portuguese youngster has been excellent ever since he made his way into the Lisbon giants’ starting line-up, where he has been 37 times this season.

With three goals and five assists, Fernandes has demonstrated his creative capabilities and is a constant threat for the opposition to try and defend against. Alongside a better set of quality team-mates, the 20-year-old could quickly become a far better player, linking up with those around him.

He is just 20-years-old and already capped by Portugal, which proves just how good he is and is set to be as well.

Why Arsenal must not let potential technical director Paul Mitchell slip through net

[ad_pod ]

As two more technical director candidates slip through the buttery fingers of Arsenal, The Times have reported that former Tottenham Hotspur Head of Recruitment Paul Mitchell was being considered for the role.

What’s the word, then?

In their desperate search to make an appointment in the role, the Gunners were understood to be mainly looking at two options, former player and Ajax Director of Football Marc Overmars and Monchi (Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo).

The former has now signed a contract extension with the Dutch giants and the latter has made the move to become sporting director for Sevilla in La Liga.

If they are to bring someone in soon, Unai Emery’s side are rather short of options, although the internal appointment of Head of Youth Scouting Steve Morrow has also been discussed.

Mitchell is currently working in Germany with RB Leipzig, but rose to fame in England with a post-playing career more notable than his time as a player.

First, he helped Southampton climb the divisions to achieve Premier League status with the signings of players such as Sadio Mane and Toby Alderweireld, before moving to White Hart Lane where he would serve in the aforementioned role between November 2014 and March 2017, overseeing the signings of many great talents that have helped Spurs become a consistent top four team in the Premier League.

Arsenal, he’s your man

With most other rational options off the table for now, Arsenal’s man should undoubtedly be Mitchell, given his pedigree in the English top-flight.

For the Gunners’ fierce North London rivals, the 37-year-old spotted and brought in such talents as Dele Alli from MK Dons, Ben Davies from Swansea City, Eric Dier from Sporting Lisbon, Heung-Min Son from Bayer Leverkusen, Kieran Trippier from Burnley, Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid and Victor Wanyama from Southampton, to name a few.

Imagine how much better Arsenal could have been in the last few years if they possessed players of this quality in great numbers in their squad.

And the award for most enthusiastic celebration of a goal scored in the last week goes to the fan in the video below…

A young creative midfielder such as Alli, as well as a solid centre-back and a defensive midfield powerhouse such as Alderweireld and Wanyama, perhaps would have been enough to push them over the line for their first title since 2004 in 2015/16.

This clear eye for spotting talent is what Mitchell would bring to the table at the Emirates Stadium and with the post-career Premier League experience that is maybe lacking in Overmars and Monchi, he could even be a better option than the original preferred targets.

While it’s unclear why they went off the idea of him in the first place, perhaps he rejected their initial interest, the Gunners hierarchy must now re-focus their attention on Mitchell and do everything in their power to persuade him to move back to the English capital.

Liverpool: Jordan Henderson’s impact on the team is as strong as ever

Jordan Henderson might have been relegated to substitute at Liverpool this season, but his impact has never been larger.

His match-sealing goal against Southampton on Friday night put the Reds a step closer to Premier League glory, and his emotional celebration made the fans remember that their club captain is in it to win it this season.

Henderson might have been demoted to the bench due to the emergence of Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum establishing themselves as first-team midfielders, but Jurgen Klopp himself has claimed that his importance on the first-team is even stronger than ever.

The Liverpool manager even said after the 3-1 win that Henderson has done well in replacing legend Steven Gerrard at the club, saying, “The most difficult job in the last 500 years of football was to replace Steven Gerrard.

“In the mind of the people it was like if it’s not Stevie, then it’s not good enough, and he has dealt with that outstandingly well so he can be really proud. Now we have to think of the future and he is a very important part of our team.”

Henderson’s importance can be understandable when you look at his appearance stats in the league this season. The Liverpool skipper has only failed to come on the pitch once when he has been involved with the squad this campaign, starting 18 and coming on as sub 11 times.

Fans, for the remainder of the season at least, will want to see Henderson remain on the bench for players who bring more urgency and quality to the team, but in their captain they know they have a player who makes as big as an impact on the squad than anyone else, and that nobody in the club is as suited to wear the armband as the man who was picked to succeed Gerrard at the club.

Liverpool fans, has this been Henderson’s best season? Let us know!
