Daniel Stendel didn’t get what he expected against Sunderland

[ad_pod ]

Barnsley hosted fellow League One promotion-chasers Sunderland at Oakwell on Tuesday.

Despite it being a fiercely contested match, with plenty of quality and creativity on display, it ultimately ended goalless, so both sides earned a single point each.

This result is a greater disappointment for the Tykes, who will have been desperate to capitalise upon their home advantage in order to pull away from the Black Cats in the race for automatic promotion. However, whilst Daniel Stendel’s side remain above Sunderland in the table, there is just four points between them with the Wearside outfit holding a game in hand.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

Barnsley are still in the driving seat though and Stendel will know that it is vital that his squad retains its composure.

What he said

Following the 0-0 draw, as quoted by ClubCall, the German coach said: “It was a closer game than we expected.

“The goal was to win, but we are satisfied…In the last minutes we tried to win, but we could not score. A draw for both teams is okay.”

Keep calm

There is still plenty of football left to be played in this campaign, and Barnsley still have every chance of securing promotion, so long as they keep their heads.

The failure to win last night was a disappointment and a setback, but by sending this calm message out to the squad and fans, Stendel is seeking to ensure that everyone remains relaxed and focused heading into the all-important run in.

Ole’s first capture? Manchester United confident of signing Harry Maguire this summer

[ad_pod ]According to the Daily Star, Manchester United are confident of signing Leicester’s Harry Maguire this summer after failing to secure the centre-back’s signature last summer under Jose Mourinho.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Red Devils reportedly tried to lure the England international to Old Trafford last summer, but were priced out of a move by the Foxes who were intent on keeping Maguire.

Now, however, the aforementioned report from the Daily Star suggests that it was Maguire who wasn’t keen to ditch the club who had splashed out £17m to sign him from relegated Hull back in 2017, instead deciding to stay put and show some loyalty.

Which “global superstar” has just been named Man Utd’s worst ever January signing? Find out in the video above…

The former Sheffield United defender is now open to a move though, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly urging the club to sign Maguire so he can build his defence around the 26-year-old.

Very harsh on Chris Smalling

One would assume that Maguire would be signed to partner Victor Lindelof in defence, seeing as the 24-year-old has made the most starts out of any of United’s centre-backs this season with 32 to his name, whilst Smalling has 26 – Lindelof has also been arguably the club’s most improved player and has enjoyed an excellent season.

If that is to be the case, then it would be extremely harsh on Smalling who has performed very well under Solskjaer, proving to be a solid, reliable option who very rarely lets the side down.

A number of United fans have been impressed with the England international of late since the Norwegian replaced Mourinho, so for him to be dropped in place of Maguire – should the deal go through – would be cruel.

He may well keep his place, but with Lindelof in equally, if not more, impressive form, it is unlikely that Maguire would be kept on the bench were he to arrive for a reported fee of £65m.

Welcome back: Nottingham Forest fans excited to see Figueiredo return to training

[ad_pod ]

It’s been a long road to recovery for Nottingham Forest defender Tobias Figueiredo but he could be about to make a comeback after posting a picture of himself in training on social media.

The Portuguese defender has been missing since last year so after making a reappearance on Twitter, fans are already dreaming about a return for the 25 year-old.

One supporter gave the centre back heavy praise, calling him the best defender at the club. Another spoke about how having him and Michael Dawson back could help the team challenge for promotion.

The Midlands club currently sit in 11th place, but are just three points off the play-off places going into the final few months of the campaign, and how special a return it would be for Figueiredo to aid his team’s surge towards the play-offs.

The defender played 13 times earlier in the season, impressing in the back line. However, he hasn’t been seen on the pitch since a 1-0 defeat to QPR before Christmas.

The 6 ft 2 man signed permanently for Forest back in the summer following a loan spell from Sporting Lisbon last season.

Here’s what some members of the City Ground faithful have been saying about the 25-year-old ahead of his return…

Liverpool fans react after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is withdrawn from his comeback early

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s comeback from injury didn’t go as planned.

The England international has been out since the first leg of the Champions League semi-final tie against Roma last season after damaging multiple knee ligaments against the Serie A side.

Is Jurgen Klopp a “serial bottler”? The fan in the video below certainly thinks so…

Ahead of schedule, the former Arsenal man was pencilled in to make his return in the Reds’ Under-23 match against Derby on Friday afternoon, although things didn’t go as planned.

Whilst nothing horrendous happened, the 25-year-old had to be withdrawn on 41 minutes for ‘precautionary reasons’ after feeling some tightness in his hamstring.

Fearing that their No.21 had suffered a setback in his rehabilitation, Liverpool fans on Twitter began to fret as they feared the man who their hopes are relying on in the second half of the season was injured yet again.

The fact that it is a fresh injury scare rather than a flare-up in his knee is probably actually a good thing, but let’s see what the Merseysiders are saying on Twitter about Oxlade-Chamberlain’s early withdrawal…

Edwards could pull off masterstroke by selling Awoniyi for £12.9 million

Liverpool have developed a number of young talents over the years who have either gone on to break into the first-team or seek moves away to secure regular football.

Of course, with success revolving around money nowadays in the football world it’s very difficult for younger players to work their way into the manager’s plans, especially in the Premier League.

The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez have managed to do it in recent times at Anfield, but there’s an awful lot of players who have had to settle for loan moves instead.

One player who’s currently spending time out on loan is Taiwo Awoniyi.

Indeed, Liverpool signed the Nigerian for £990k (as per Transfermarkt) back in 2015 but he’s failed to work his way into the first-team fold, with five loan moves to his name. He’s currently plying his trade at Belgian side Mouscron.

Awoniyi has seven goals and two assists to his name in nine appearances after joining Mouscron on loan back in the January transfer window, which appears to have caught the attention of Schalke (as per Liverpool Echo). And, it’s believed that the Reds would ask for £12.9 million for the striker, which would provide them with a large profit.

Michael Edwards has worked wonders over the years at Anfield by getting the best possible fee out of the sale of a number of players, including the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Dominic Solanke. So, he could pull off another masterstroke by getting almost £13 million for a player who hasn’t even featured for the Reds first-team.

Liverpool fans, how pleased would you be with £12.9 million for the attacker? Join the discussion by commenting down below!

Leeds fans hopeful that physio can defy the odds after latest injury

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans on Twitter have been hoping that Rob Price can work his magic once again and get Barry Douglas back on the pitch at Elland Road before the end of the season.

Douglas has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign with a medial ligament injury but fans are struggling to believe he won’t feature again with Price’s record of getting players back ahead of schedule.

Price, whose official title is ‘Head of Medicine and Performance’, has been busier than ever this season as Leeds have had an astounding number of injuries under Marcelo Bielsa.

The physio has become somewhat of a cult hero in Yorkshire, with fans taking note of the excellent job he has been doing in getting players back sooner than expected.

Leeds are yet to have a fully available squad for a match this season, so Price really has played a massive unsung role in helping the Whites in their push for promotion. Fans are now hoping he can do it again by getting Douglas back before the season is up.

Here’s what Leeds fans had to say on Twitter…

Rangers fans discuss Tavernier’s future as captain

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Rangers fans have been discussing the form and leadership abilities of James Tavernier, and not one of them thinks the right-back should keep the captain’s armband next season.

The Gers lost their last realistic hope of winning silverware this season on Tuesday, as Aberdeen rocked up to Ibrox and won 2-0 to advance to the Scottish Cup semi-final, where they will play Celtic.

Not a single Gers player will feel proud of their performance, but fans were extra critical of Tavernier after the match, and not even because of anything that happened on the pitch.

Fans were fuming that the club’s official Twitter account interviewed substitute and recent signing Jermain Defoe, instead of the skipper, after such a devastating defeat.

There is no doubt Tavernier is a brilliant player going forward, racking up 14 goals and 17 assists in all competitions this season, but he is prone to lapses in concentration at the back, which simply should not happen from the side’s skipper.

Fans clearly feel the same way, as you can see from the Twitter reactions down below…

Jacob Murphy needs to buck up his ideas for new West Brom boss after latest display

[ad_pod ]

West Bromwich Albion would have hoped they were getting a player who would really make a big impact in the final third for them in the second half of the season when they signed Jacob Murphy on loan from Newcastle United during the January transfer window, but it hasn’t really worked out that way.

Two goals in seven Championship appearances so far may look impressive on paper, but given he is a player who should be fighting to prove that he should be a starter at St James’ Park the 24-year-old simply hasn’t been good enough.

Having been left on the substitutes’ bench for the defeat against Leeds United earlier this month, he played the full 90 in the disappointing 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town at the weekend that ultimately brought an end to Darren Moore’s reign, but he was given a chance of a reprieve by caretaker boss Jimmy Shan against Swansea City at The Hawthorns on Wednesday.

West Brom fans will want to cover their ears for the video below…

However the wide man failed to take his chance and, according to The Birmingham Mail’s West Brom correspondent Paul Suart’s player ratings, isn’t bringing much to the team at the moment.

He’s right as well.

Murphy failed to have a single shot during his 68 minutes on the pitch before being replaced by Hal Robson-Kanu, while he also failed to make a key pass and was successful with only one of his four attempted crosses as he wasted many opportunities when in decent areas.

Perhaps most worrying was his general demeanour and attitude, as he seemed unwilling to put in the yards for his team and didn’t seem overly committed when it came to 50/50 challenges for the ball.

If reports are to be believed, West Brom will take their time to appoint Moore’s successor and the Magpies loanee needs to seriously buck up his ideas if he wants to be anywhere near the XI under whoever the new manager might be.

It’s not only in the short-term that he needs to prove himself though, because his Newcastle career will go up in flames if he continues in the same manner he is right now.
