Porel, Axar and Stubbs fire DC to 188

Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs gave late impetus to a floundering Delhi Capitals innings on Wednesday night; they finished with 188 for 5 after being put into bat by Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in IPL 2025. This was the first sub-200 score by a team batting first in the last nine T20 innings at this ground.Axar injected momentum in the death with a takedown of Wanindu Hasaranga, hitting 34 off 14 in all. Stubbs, dropped on 12 off 8 by Riyan Parag off Hasaranga, batted through to also finish 34 not out off 18 balls as the last three overs went for 42 runs. This included a 19-run final over off Sandeep Sharma, who until then had sensational figures of 3-0-14-0. Sandeep bowled four wides, and a no-ball in what proved to be a 11-ball over that ended with Maheesh Theekshana dropping a sitter at point off Stubbs. The tone was set up top by Abishek Porel, who picked 23 off Tushar Deshpande’s first over – the second of the innings – by Jake Fraser-McGurk and Karun Nair fell early. McGurk began by lofting Jofra Archer for consecutive boundaries in the first over, but holed out to mid-off trying to loft a hard-length delivery.Nair, coming off his IPL best of 89 on debut, then survived three rocket deliveries from Archer. Two of those were bouncers that whizzed past his ear and had him mistime a pull that nearly carried to square leg. Then he was run out at the non-striker’s end following a mix-up with Porel as he walked back for a duck.KL Rahul was cautious to begin with, the slowness of the surface proving challenging to score, especially when deliveries were dug into the pitch on a length. At one stage he was on 17 off 18, but couldn’t quite push on – eventually falling for a 32-ball 38 when he pulled Archer to deep midwicket. This is when DC had Axar to thank as he immediately took down spin to inject momentum that Stubbs carried forward to give them a total to bowl at.

Liverpool now eyeing "significantly" cheaper DM than Baleba and Wharton

Liverpool’s lavish spending this summer has given them one of the best starting elevens in Europe. New signings like Hugo Ekitiké and Alexander Isak have elevated their attack from players like Darwin Núñez and Luis Diaz, who struggled at times last season.

However, even with their big spend, there is still room for them to improve in January and next summer. On deadline day, they secured the signing of Isak but failed to get a deal for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi over the line.

Centre-back is one of the positions where the squad is thinnest, and when Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are out, they only have Joe Gomez and new youngster Giovanni Leoni as naturals in the position. Guehi will be available as a free agent next summer, but Real Madrid are now looking to snatch him up.

Another position that needs some reinforcement is the deeper part of the midfield. Alexis Mac Allister, Dominic Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch are the three most common faces in midfield, but when they’re rotated, options are only really Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo, with the latter often being utilised in a makeshift defensive role.

Due to this, the Premier League champions are looking at bringing in another midfielder so they can compete across the Champions League and the domestic competitions.

Stiller the new name in midfield hunt

A number of midfielders have been linked with the Liverpool midfield role next summer but a new name in contention is Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller. On Liverpool’s 2026 summer transfer business, transfer journalist Graham Bailey said: “In my opinion, Liverpool are going to want another CDM next year, a top-class one.

“Angelo Stiller would do that role, but I do personally wonder whether Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton would be higher up in the pecking order; obviously, they would come with significantly higher price tags. It wouldn’t surprise me if we see Liverpool getting involved in those conversations a bit more.”

Stiller is currently valued at around £40 million, but Wharton and Baleba could both be double that or even more. In the summer, Manchester United decided not to pursue the Brighton midfielder after it was made clear they wouldn’t drop their asking price below £100 million.

Stiller indicates shift in desired profile

The shift in focus from Wharton and Baleba to Stiller is not just a monetary change but a stylistic one. Wharton and Baleba’s strengths lie defensively, whereas Stiller is more of a ball-playing footballer, more in the vein of Pedri, who FBREF rank as a similar profile.

Based on these metrics, it seems that Liverpool is after a different profile midfielder rather than a cheaper one. Slot is clearly looking for a player who can play the ball well and support with ball progression.

This season has demonstrated that even the midfielders who would be expected to be contributing defensively, like Gravenberch, are also expected to contribute in attack. While Slot’s side has conceded a significant amount of goals this season, they are winning games by outscoring teams, and this may be why there has been a shift in target to a midfielder like Stiller.

Teenager Mhatre replaces Gaikwad at CSK; Smaran replaces Zampa at SRH

Both Gaikwad and Zampa have been sidelined from the rest of IPL 2025 with injuries

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Apr-2025Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed 17-year-old Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre as a replacement for the injured captain Ruturaj Gaikwad for the remainder of IPL 2025, for INR 30 lakh.Mhatre is yet to make his T20 debut but has two centuries in seven List-A games. The first of them was a 117-ball 181 against Nagaland that included 15 fours and 11 sixes followed by a 93-ball 148 against Saurashtra that included 13 fours and nine sixes. He can also bowl offspin, with which he has picked up seven List A wickets in four innings.”He came into the trial at Chennai and he was in the nets. It was just amazing how these young cricketers play,” CSK’s bowling consultant Eric Simons said. “They play a fearless brand of cricket. If you look at the way CSK plays, there’s a brand [of cricket] we play and he fitted in that perspective to be able to play with a sense of freedom, to be able to play aggressively but the way you play. He came and had really good nets and the guys who kept eyes on him were very impressed with what he’s got and what he can offer for the future. So very excited to have him as part of the side.”Mhatre also represented the India Under-19 team in three games at the Asia Cup in 2024. It was in the first-class circuit, however, where he first made headlines. He made his red-ball debut in the Irani Cup last year and dazzled with a knock of 176 against Maharashtra – led by Gaikwad – that followed his 52 against Baroda on a turning track in Vadodara. So far, he has played nine first-class games, scoring 504 runs, including two hundreds, at an average of 31.50. His List A numbers are more impressive: 458 runs in seven innings at an average of 65.42 and a strike rate of 135.50. With his century against Nagaland, Mhatre had also broken Yashasvi Jaiswal’s world record of becoming the youngest player to score 150-plus in men’s senior List A cricket.Gaikwad led CSK in their first five games, of which they lost four, before an elbow injury ruled him out of the season, with MS Dhoni taking over as captain.R Smaran is among the brightest young talents from Karnataka•Maharaja T20Smaran replaces injured Zampa at SRHAustralia legspinner Adam Zampa has been sidelined from the rest of IPL 2025 with a shoulder injury. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have brought in Karnataka batter R Smaran as his replacement. Smaran, 21, is uncapped in the IPL and has joined SRH at his base price of INR 30 lakh.Zampa, who played alongside Australia team-mates Travis Head and Pat Cummins, had featured twice, taking 2 for 94 from eight overs, although one of those appearances had been in the game that brought 528 runs between SRH and Rajasthan Royals.Smaran was among the breakout stars of the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring 433 runs in seven innings at an average of 72.16 and strike rate of just over 100. He also starred for them in the final with a knock of 101 off 92 balls that helped Karnataka lift the title by putting up 348. He has played six T20s so far, scoring 170 runs at a strike rate of 170.00. He was recently in action in the DY Patil tournament in Mumbai, in the lead-up to IPL 2025.

Ethan Bamber claims five-for as Warwickshire, Yorkshire trade blows

Warwickshire 161 for 6 (Barnard 41, Coad 2-30, Sears 2-38) trail Yorkshire 205 (Bairstow 47, Bamber 5-47) by 44 runsNew-ball seamer Ethan Bamber claimed his first five-wicket haul in a Warwickshire shirt as they and star-studded Yorkshire traded blows during a 16-wicket opening day of their Rothesay County Championship fixture at Headingley.Bamber moved from Middlesex over the winter and is playing his fourth match for the Bears, who won the toss on a green pitch and bowled their hosts out for 205 to signal an early tea.His 5 for 47 from 15.2 overs included England’s new limited-overs captain Harry Brook for a frantic 33, while impressive three-wicket all-rounder Ed Barnard got Joe Root for 1 and Jonny Bairstow for 47.Warwickshire, for whom wicketkeeper Kai Smith claimed five catches, closed on 161 for 6 from 43 overs in reply, trailing by 44. Barnard added 41.Both counties came into this following draws last time out.Warwickshire were six points better off in the early Division One table after three matches, and they edged the morning as Yorkshire reached lunch at 97 for 4. Brook had 33 of those. With obvious movement through the air and off the pitch on offer, Bamber struck twice added to a wicket apiece for fellow seamers Barnard and Olly Hannon-Dalby.Having left Fin Bean out, Yorkshire opted to utilise Dom Bess as a locum opener alongside Adam Lyth, who contributed 26 but was one of the morning wickets. Dawid Malan (groin) was also missing.Bess, for 16, was first to go when he got an inside-edge to a Bamber delivery which nipped back and was caught behind by Smith.Warwickshire’s wicketkeeper took three morning catches, including James Wharton off Bamber at the second attempt. He fumbled the initial chance but held the rebound between his thighs. When Root played at a back-of-a-length delivery from Barnard which he probably didn’t need to, edging low to second slip, Yorkshire were 32 for 3 after 14 overs.Lyth followed to Hannon-Dalby before Brook made an action-packed start to his innings. Although he drove nicely, he danced down the pitch twice looking to hit over the top and survived a huge caught behind appeal off Michael Booth.Brook failed to add to his lunchtime 33 when miscueing an attempted uppercut off Bamber to Hamza Shaikh at third – 97 for 5 in the 29th over, three balls into the afternoon.George Hill followed shortly afterwards to the same bowler before Bairstow and Jordan Thompson united to share a vital seventh-wicket 61. While both were attacking, it wasn’t reckless. Thompson supported his captain with 35.There were signs of Bairstow – making his 100th Championship appearance – at his savage best. But there was finesse too. One straight drive off Barnard was as good as any shot all day. However, Barnard removed both as Yorkshire fell to 185 for 9. Thompson was caught behind before Bairstow played on.New Zealander Ben Sears then clobbered a late 28 to sneak Yorkshire beyond the 200-mark before edging Bamber into the slips to signal an early tea.And wickets continued to fall in the evening – six of them. After Davies and Rob Yates shared an opening 30, Warwickshire lost four for 17 inside eight overs.Davies edged Australian debutant Jordan Buckingham’s new-ball seam to third slip before Yates was trapped lbw by Ben Coad. And when Shaikh gloved pacy Sears behind as he tried to leave alone, followed by Zen Malik trapped lbw by Hill next ball, the hosts were back in it at 47 for 4 in the 14th.Barnard then set about settling the situation and drove nicely. He shared 59 with Dan Mousley – the latter contributing 32 before edging Coad to second slip – and a sixth-wicket 50 with Australian debutant Beau Webster, 32 not out. However, Barnard was caught at second slip off Sears late on, almost the last act of a super day’s play.

Leeds on "alert" for star loved by Jurgen Klopp, he'll pick new club "soon"

Leeds United may have seen the transfer window slam shut, but they are still in the race to bring in a former Premier League star who is on the free agent market, according to a report.

Leeds United miss out on Josh Brownhill

Despite the Whites showing an interest in Josh Brownhill, the former Burnley midfielder won’t be moving to Elland Road after leaving Turf Moor for a new challenge elsewhere. Instead, the Warrington-born man is set for a surprise move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Shabab, with Graeme Bailey detailing on X that he has knocked back advances from several Premier League clubs to sign a lucrative deal in the Middle East.

He stated: “Josh Brownhill has agreed terms on his move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Shabab. Brownhill shunned interest from Wolves, Everton and Leeds whilst also rebuffing a late approach from Brentford. He is now due for his medical ahead of penning a two-year-deal worth £100,000-a-week.”

Injuries to Ao Tanaka and Ethan Ampadu have left Leeds light in midfield. At the same time, Joe Rodon recently pulled out of Wales’ double header against Kazakhstan and Canada, albeit he is expected to recover in time to face Fulham.

Nevertheless, a disappointing end to the window has left Leeds a body or two short from middle to front, factoring in circumstances, something that Chelsea’s late hijack of their move for Facundo Buonanotte didn’t help.

Senne Lammens was also approached by Leeds before choosing to move to Manchester United, capping off a frustrating final few hours of the market.

Nevertheless, there could still be some out-of-window action at the Whites, with Daniel Farke set to fight to strengthen their engine room with the arrival of a renowned free agent.

Leeds United battling to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

According to Football Insider, Leeds United are looking to sign former Premier League midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on a free transfer after he was released by Besiktas.

Pete O’Rourke explained the situation: “Now that he’s left Besiktas, clubs have been put on alert by his availability. There’s interest from clubs in the Premier League, Championship and across Europe as well, with Leeds and Birmingham among them. So I’m sure he’d be ready to return to England after a couple of years away, and I expect there will be some movement on his future soon.”

Praised by Jurgen Klopp for his double against Genk in the Champions League back in 2019, the former England international is now 32 years of age and scored once in 20 appearances across all competitions last season.

Now looking to get back to familiar surroundings, he may find a home at Elland Road due to Farke’s shortage of midfielders, offering leadership and experience if the Whites can beat Birmingham City to his signature.

Frank can get Simons firing by boldly benching "sensational" Spurs starlet

After Thomas Frank took the reins early in the summer, no Tottenham Hotspur fan would’ve predicted the incredible start he’s made – filling the gap after Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal.

The Dane has only tasted defeat once in his first five competitive outings, winning the other four – most notably against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at the Etihad.

However, this afternoon’s meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion will present another tricky clash for the 51-year-old to navigate if he is to keep up his tremendous start.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side are currently on a two-game winning streak over the Lilywhites – subsequently doing the double over them during the 2024/25 campaign.

If Spurs are to put such a run to an end, the manager will have to make sure one player hits the ground running after a quiet start to his career at North London.

Why Xavi Simons has struggled at Spurs

Xavi Simons was one of Spurs’ big-money additions made during the summer transfer window, joining Frank’s men in a £52m deal from
Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

The attacking midfielder’s arrival in England generated huge excitement, and understandably so, given the talent and potential he possesses at the age of just 22.

His tally of 19 combined goals and assists last campaign showcases that he’s able to either find a teammate or find the back of the net alone, subsequently adding a new dimension to the Lilywhites’ attack.

However, two games into his spell in England, he’s operated off the left-hand side rather than his natural number ten position – something which has undoubtedly limited his success to date.

Simons may have registered an assist in the Premier League, but the youngster still has so much more to offer, with Frank needing to give him the opportunity to star in a central position.

Should the manager make that call, he will have to drop one player from the heart of his side – leading to a decision which could be somewhat controversial for the fanbase.

The Spurs player who should be dropped to allow Simons to thrive

Since Frank took the reins during the off-season, the Dane has utilised a flat midfield trio, but that could all be about to change in the trip to face the Seagulls this afternoon.

Tottenham Hotspur managerThomasFrankcelebrates after the match

Lucas Bergvall has arguably been the club’s shining light over the last couple of weeks, scoring in the victory against West Ham United last Saturday.

The Swede even claimed the Man of the Match award in the Champions League on Tuesday night, further showcasing how impressive he’s been during the early stages of the campaign.

He’s often featured alongside Pape Sarr at the heart of the side, but if Simons is to operate behind the striker, the 23-year-old may have to be the one to give way.

Like Bergvall, he scored in the clash at the London Stadium last Saturday, but he could well be sacrificed if the Dutchman does shift inside off the left flank.

It would be a controversial decision from Frank, especially after Sarr was labelled “sensational” by one analyst after his recent displays in the Premier League.

His performance against Villarreal in midweek was arguably one of his poorest of 2025/26, potentially leaving the door open for the manager to test out the big-money signing as part of his midfield trio.

Sarr was replaced with just over 20 minutes left of the European clash, registering just a 77% pass completion rate – highlighting his sloppy nature with the ball at his feet.

He also failed to make any interceptions against the Yellow Submarine, unable to offer the ball-winning presence which he’s so often showcased in North London.

The Senegalese international also tends to operate in a box-to-box role, potentially leaving the side too open should he play alongside – with Frank potentially utilising Joao Palhinha and Bergvall in a pivot slightly behind Simons.

Such a tactical dilemma is not necessarily a bad thing for the new manager, as it highlights the quality and depth he currently has at his disposal in the capital.

However, it’s crucial that the Dane gives out equal opportunities to keep the players happy, something which could see Simons finally get his opportunity in a number ten position against the Seagulls.

He can surpass Woltemade: Newcastle have one of the world's best teen stars

Newcastle United’s summer business underlined just how far the club has come since the takeover and how much further they still want to go.

It was a window marked by frustration, last-minute deals and big-money moves.

The Magpies were forced to bide their time as a string of forward targets slipped away, with Liam Delap, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro and Benjamin Sesko all proving elusive.

Persistent interest in Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa also seemed destined to end in disappointment.

Yet as the window drew to a close, Newcastle’s hierarchy finally pulled the trigger.

Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade arrived in a £69m deal, paving the way for Alexander Isak’s record-breaking £125m switch to Premier League Champions Liverpool on deadline day.

Wissa’s determination to join also paid off, with a £55m agreement finalised as the player drove through the night to force the transfer.

Early results, however, have been mixed. A goalless draw with Aston Villa, a 3-2 home defeat to Liverpool and another 0-0 against Leeds have highlighted Newcastle’s need for attacking fluency.

Wolves at St James’ Park and a glamour Champions League tie against Barcelona await after the international break – fixtures that will test Howe’s new-look group immediately.

Nick Woltemade: Newcastle’s headline addition

At 23 years old and standing at 1.98m, Nick Woltemade is the archetypal modern target man.

Tall, technically secure, and more mobile than his frame suggests.

His 12 goals in 28 Bundesliga games for Stuttgart last season marked him out as one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards, and it was no surprise that Bayern Munich had three bids rejected earlier in the summer.

Persuaded by direct conversations with Howe, Woltemade chose Newcastle as the platform for the next stage of his career.

The Germany international already has four senior caps to his name and impressed at the U21 European Championships this summer.

Most recently, he showcased his playmaking instincts with an assist in Germany’s 3-1 win over Northern Ireland.

A closer look at his data from 2024/25 paints a picture of a well-rounded striker.

Across 28 appearances, Woltemade was involved in 14 goals, with a shot-on-target percentage of 50%.

He averages 1.28 shots on target per 90 and creates 4.38 shot-creating actions in the same span, evidence of his ability to contribute beyond finishing.

His 2.89 progressive passes and 1.72 progressive carries per 90 show a player comfortable linking play, while 26.1 carries per 90 underline his willingness to drive the ball forward.

Even defensively, Woltemade has shown application, recording 0.56 tackles and 1.28 blocks per 90.

For a Newcastle side that often struggles to break down low blocks, his mix of aerial presence, movement and creativity looks like the perfect tool.

That being said, perhaps Newcastle have a gem in their ranks who could surpass the big German.

The hidden Newcastle gem with superstar potential

While Woltemade is already making headlines, Newcastle may have secured an even greater long-term prize in the form of Vakhtang Salia.

The 18-year-old Georgian striker joined on a five-year deal this summer and is expected to be a key figure in the U21 squad this season.

He arrives from Dinamo Tbilisi, where he registered eight goals and four assists in 57 senior appearances.

Modest numbers on paper, but performances that convinced scouts from across Europe.

Salia has already attracted admiration from giants including Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich, while both Arsenal and Manchester City explored a deal.

In the words of journalist Graeme Bailey he is regarded as “one of the best teenage prospects in the world,” a label that has earned comparisons to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

What makes Salia so intriguing is his potential. At a market value of just €800k (£600k), Newcastle have invested in a player who could grow into a genuine superstar.

His performances at youth international level for Georgia have already caught the eye, and he has shown maturity beyond his years in leading the line against more experienced defenders in the Georgian league.

For Howe, Salia represents an opportunity. The club must carefully manage his development, ensuring he does not suffer the setbacks that have stalled other highly-touted prospects.

If handled correctly, though, Newcastle may find themselves with a striker capable of eclipsing Woltemade.

William Saliba explains decision to sign new Arsenal contract and snub Real Madrid despite 'lacking trophies' with the Gunners

William Saliba explained his decision to sign a new Arsenal contract and snub Real Madrid despite "lacking trophies" with the Gunners. The French defender could have chased the bright lights of Madrid. He could have swapped north London for the glamour of the Santiago Bernabeu. But when Los Blancos came knocking, Arsenal’s defensive powerhouse slammed the door shut; and he has no regrets.

Saliba: The French rock who turned down Real’s call

In a world where loyalty is rare, Saliba’s decision sent a clear message: his heart belongs to Arsenal. Before penning his new deal, the 24-year-old defender had just 18 months left on his contract, and Los Blancos were circling like hawks. However, Arsenal’s hierarchy moved fast. Sporting director Andrea Berta, who also played a key role in tying down Gabriel Magalhaes and young gems like Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly, treated this renewal like a mission of national importance. The result? A massive win for the Gunners. The CIES Football Observatory now lists Saliba as Arsenal’s most valuable asset, worth between €89m and €103m (£77m/$103m–£89m/$119m). A staggering figure for a player for whom Arsenal spent just £27m ($36m) in 2019.

AdvertisementAFP‘i feel at home here’ – Saliba’s heartfelt confession

For Saliba, the decision wasn’t about money or fame. It was about belonging.

"I wanted to continue at Arsenal because I feel at home there […] I wanted to settle there in the long term," he told reporters.

Despite Arsenal’s resurgence under Arteta, major silverware has eluded them since the 2020 FA Cup triumph. For Saliba, that drought burns deep.

“I’m lacking trophies but they will come quickly because we have a good manager and a good squad,” he insisted.

However, his determination is fuelled by unfinished business. While players like Trent Alexander-Arnold have traded the Premier League for Madrid after lifting multiple trophies, the Arsenal defender says he can’t leave empty-handed.

"He won some titles with Liverpool," he said. "Me, I didn't win anything here except… only the Community Shield, so yeah. I've done nothing for this club to think about leaving. I want to stay here and win a lot of trophies. I love this club. I cannot leave this club without giving them something back. I‘ve won nothing. So, yeah, my first choice was to stay here and win everything first."

It’s a statement that will delight Arsenal fans and underline the culture Arteta has built: one of hunger, loyalty, and accountability.

Saliba's new deal promises a massive wage hike

Saliba’s consistency over the past two seasons has made him untouchable in Arteta’s system. The manager's trust in him is total, and so is the club’s investment. The Frenchman’s new deal reportedly earns him £250,000 a week, making him the third-highest-paid player at the Emirates, behind Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz. Arsenal’s wage bill has climbed to £328m ($438m) per year, with seven stars now earning £200k or more weekly, including summer signing Viktor Gyokeres. But the board see it as money well spent, a statement of intent from a club ready to challenge for everything.

However, Saliba's journey hasn’t been a fairy tale. When Arteta took over in December 2019, the young centre-back was cast aside, loaned out three times to Saint-Etienne, Nice, and Marseille. But instead of sulking, he fought.

"Arteta was straight to me," he said. "The first week he told me that for him I was not ready to play. He told me this. I was training and I was playing with the Under 21s. At the end of December, he told me that it was better for me to go on loan rather than stay here and not play. I was angry because I needed to play.

"He sent me on loan and I was in touch with (then sporting director) Edu when he was here. He was talking with my agent. After the first loan, he said we needed one more loan. I didn't give up and now I'm here in front of you playing for Arsenal. I didn't give up and now I'm here in front of you playing for Arsenal."

GettySaliba chasing glory, but only in north London

As he prepares for France’s World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Iceland, Saliba knows his heart beats red and white. He isn’t chasing glory abroad; he’s building it in London. In an era of short-term loyalty and quick exits, Saliba’s commitment is refreshing. And if his words are anything to go by, he won’t stop until that heartbeat echoes under the confetti of a Premier League or Champions League title.

'Too many heart attacks!' – Ruben Amorim's secret message to Man Utd players revealed after securing vital win before international break

Ruben Amorim's secret message to Manchester United players has been revealed after they managed to pick up a vital win before the international break. The Portuguese manager is said to have drawn a bold line in the sand at Carrington, demanding 'no more heart attacks' from his players after finally seeing his team deliver a composed, professional performance in their 2-0 victory over Sunderland.

  • Amorim's dressing room command

Last Saturday’s 2-0 win over Sunderland brought a sigh of relief around Old Trafford. It wasn’t spectacular and it wasn’t wild, but it was exactly what Amorim wanted: measured, organised, and professional. The Portuguese boss, under increasing pressure after a turbulent start to life at Old Trafford, reportedly told his squad behind closed doors that he doesn’t want drama, chaos, or last-minute heroics anymore, just maturity and control. Amorim praised his side for keeping their cool under pressure, and the more calculated style must now become the standard if United want to rediscover their winning rhythm.

A source quoted by said: "Amorim told the players that while the fans want drama, he doesn’t. He was very happy with the Sunderland game, he thought it was a professional performance and different to some of the heart attack-inducing football they have played this season and last. He told them that’s one of the reasons they haven’t been able to string a run of wins together. The games they have been involved in are too mentally draining and that’s causing them problems. Too many heart attack games which is mentally draining. That's what we want. Mature professional performances."

Locked-in and United firmly behind the manager

Despite the noise outside the club, United’s top brass believe the dressing room remains firmly behind Amorim. CEO Omar Berrada and football director Jason Wilcox have both held informal chats with senior players, including skipper Bruno Fernandes, to gauge the squad’s mood. Sources told that while those conversations weren’t designed to test Amorim’s job security, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The mood around Carrington has improved, and the players appear united in their backing for their boss.

Even after United’s painful 3-1 loss to Brentford last month, Matthijs de Ligt put his weight behind the manager. When questioned about Amorim’s controversial 3-4-2-1 system, the Dutch defender was quick to shut down talk of tactical failure.

"Of course, I mean it's always easy to look to the manager, but in the end the players on the pitch have to do it," said De Ligt. "We can't say the goals we conceded, or the chances we conceded, are because of what… I don't know, you guys always talk about the system. That also has a lot to do with focus, concentration, and, if that's lacking in key moments, it's going to make a difference."

Whereas, after the win over Sunderland, Mount echoed De Ligt's sentiment and added: "We're 100% behind the gaffer. We've had some difficult results that hurt us, have been painful for the team, the staff and the fans, but it was important to win. It needs to be [the start of a winning streak] – we thought after Chelsea it would be the start of something, and then we go to Brentford and have a disappointing result. It starts [with the win over Sunderland], and we'll be working hard over the break. We want to get back-to-back wins, then three in a row and push on for the top four."

  • Critics circling but Amorim stands tall

With just 20 wins from 50 matches, Amorim’s win rate sits at a worrying 40 per cent, well below United’s sky-high expectations. Hence, outside the club, Amorim remains a lightning rod for criticism. United legends like Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney have taken aim at the club’s performances, with Scholes even suggesting Amorim has been given "too much time."

Speaking on , Scholes said: "I feel like with Ruben Amorim it’s got to the point where we don’t want to talk about sacking managers all the time and Manchester United do give managers enough time. "He’ll never get booed by the fans and it wasn’t until that Brentford game [where they lost 3-1] where I thought, ‘He’s getting a little bit too much time’ and it feels like it’s only a matter of time before things come to an end."

Big test for Man Utd as Anfield awaits

Despite mounting criticism, the message from inside the club is clear: Amorim is safe, for now. The board recognises the turmoil he inherited and is willing to give him more time to steady the ship, especially as the players continue to rally behind him. But patience has its limits. If the new sense of calm doesn’t translate into points soon, questions will return louder than ever. When United return from the international break, they face the biggest test of all: Liverpool at Anfield on October 19. With their arch-rivals licking their wounds after back-to-back defeats, United sense a rare opportunity to strike. A win at Anfield could silence the doubters, reignite their season, and, perhaps most importantly, buy Amorim breathing room in the hot seat.
