Thelwell said he'd "flourish": Rangers flop is on borrowed time under Rohl

If Danny Röhl did not know he had a big job on his hands already at Rangers, he certainly knows that now.

On Thursday night, the Glasgow outfit were swatted aside 2-0 by Roma at Ibrox, the club’s seventh successive European defeat, leaving them rock bottom of the gigantic Europa League table, still yet to get off the mark.

Having also been beaten by Brann and then Celtic in Sunday’s League Cup semi-finals, Röhl has become the first ever permanent Rangers manager to taste as many as three defeats across his first five games in charge.

In his press conference after the game, the German insisted that this job was not bigger than he first thought but, even though he currently has the fans onside, this can quickly turn, as Russell Martin found out, lasting only 17 games in the Ibrox hot seat.

So, with a game against Dundee at Dens Park next up for the Light Blues on Sunday, which regular starter should be on borrowed time, as Röhl targets an upturn in both performances and results?

Rangers' catastrophic summer spending

Earlier this year, 49ers Enterprises completed their takeover of Rangers, which was supposed to commence a new era of success on Glasgow’s south side.

Well, they inarguably got the appointment of manager Russell Martin wrong, while a huge amount of money was spent in the summer, albeit not very well, as the table below documents.

As the table documents, Rangers spent over £23m in the summer, while recouping a similar amount, all of which has made the squad substantially worse.

£8m, potentially rising to £10m in add-ons, was splashed to bring in Youssef Chermiti from Everton, who has scored just one goal for the club to date, replacing Hamza Igamane who departed for Lille for a similar amount, but has been on fire in Northern France, netting seven times for les Dogues already.

Similarly, Bojan Miovski has so far been a sub-par replacement for last season’s top-scorer Cyriel Dessers, who netted 29 times across all competitions, while star attacker Václav Černý simply has not been replaced, with teenager Jayden Meghoma appearing out of his depth, which isn’t ideal considering both senior left-backs Jefté and Rıdvan Yılmaz were sold.

Speaking on TNT Sports after Thursday’s defeat to Roma, Rangers legend Ally McCoist asserted that it will take at least three transfer windows to fix Rangers current predicament, asserting that he hopes the board back Röhl, noting that recruitment has to be a concern, given what sporting director Kevin Thelwell has delivered so far.

For now, Röhl has to work with the players in his squad and is under pressure to deliver results, so which of the summer recruits is on borrowed time?

The Rangers summer signing Danny Röhl must axe

They say first impressions are the most important, which is not ideal for Nasser Djiga.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

After arriving on a season-long loan from Wolves, aforementioned sporting director Thelwell backed the new defender to “flourish”.

Well, the Burkinabé international marked his home Premiership debut by being sent off against Dundee during a dismal 1-1 draw at Ibrox.

Nevertheless, mistakes happen and the 22-year-old former Crvena zvezda defender is only young, we’re sure he will learn.

Well, ten days later, Djiga’s catastrophic error presented Romeo Vermant with the opening goal just three minutes into the Champions League play-off tie, a two-legged affair Club Brugge would go onto win 9-1.

As a result, Djiga then spent a few weeks left in reserve, but has started the last three matches, with Röhl switching to a back three, seeking extra defensive solidity.

Nevertheless, Graham Falk of the Scotsman was not impressed with his performance against Roma, labelling the centre-back ‘unconvincing’, adding that he ‘completely lost his man’ for the corner from which Roma opened the scoring, concluding that he is one of many ‘poor summer signings’,

Mark Atkinson of the Scotsman meantime documented his ‘really difficult’ afternoon for the defender against Celtic at Hampden last Sunday, while Gazzetta dello Sport described him as the ‘worst’ player on the pitch after that game.

Against Roma, Djiga started in the back three alongside captain James Tavernier and John Souttar, meaning Derek Cornelius and Emmanuel Fernandez, who has made just three appearances for the club to date, were left in reserve.

Thus, even if he does stick with this back three shape, Röhl does have alternative options to the ticking time bomb of defensive errors that is Djiga.

Fernandez, who has played just one minute since August, and Cornelius, who has been generally impressive, are surely better options, starting at Dens on Sunday, facing the side Djiga has already been sent off against, so the Wolves loanee must improve if he’s to remain in the first-choice XI.

Fewer touches than Butland: Rohl must axe Rangers man who lost the ball 11x

Rangers have now lost four out of four in the Europa League, and Danny Röhl must drop the flop who lost the ball 11 times against Roma on Thursday.

Ally McCoist says 49ers and the old Rangers staff colluded to make fatal error

Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist feels the club’s new owners, staff and Russell Martin “underestimated” the size of the task at Ibrox before the head coach was sacked.

Martin lasted just four months in charge and paid the price for a poor start after Sunday’s 1-1 William Hill Premiership draw with Falkirk.

Rangers only won five out of 17 games under Martin with their sole league victory coming courtesy of a stoppage-time winner at Livingston. A Champions League exit was followed by defeats in their opening two Europa League games against Genk and Sturm Graz.

Martin was appointed soon after an American consortium secured a majority stake in Rangers but the new-look board now face another major decision.

McCoist: 49ers and old Gers staff made fatal error

McCoist said on TalkSPORT: “We’re sitting eighth in the table and we have a negative goal difference so there’s no surprise at all.

“I think probably the new owners and certainly the old management staff probably underestimated the size of the job.

“There’s a lot of people maybe just look a little bit at Scottish football and say ‘Celtic and Rangers will win their games and that’s it finished because that’s what they do’. But football is a lot more difficult than that.

“I just think that aligned to really poor, really poor business in the transfer market in terms of recruitment.

“It’s easy to blame the manager and that’s where the buck stops, we all know that’s what happens, but the players have got to take some of the responsibility as well. Some of the defending…

“The goals Rangers lost in midweek (against Sturm Graz) were incredible.

Kris Boyd slams "embarrassing" thing Martin had Rangers do in Sturm Graz defeat

It was another night to forget.

By
Tom Cunningham

Oct 3, 2025

“Rangers look like wee boys. Falkirk out-ran Rangers, they out-fought Rangers and that can happen occasionally but it’s been happening on a regular basis. It’s not good enough.

“The away games. They’ve been to St Mirren, Motherwell, Falkirk, Livingston. It’s not as if they have been to Celtic, Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen. These are games you are expected to win.”

Boyd: Thelwell's transfer business not good enough

Another former Rangers striker, Kris Boyd, expanded on McCoist’s main point and believes questions will be asked of the likes of sporting director Kevin Thelwell.

“Scotland’s a difficult place to play football,” Boyd told Sky Sports News.

“There’s a lot of people, especially down south, that think it’s easy, it’s not that good. And sometimes the football isn’t that good, you can’t get away from that.

“But it’s a difficult place to play because both clubs in this city demand that you win. Both can’t win at the same time and when you’re not winning, you come under huge scrutiny.

“And that’s where Rangers are at right now because not only Russell Martin hasn’t delivered. There’s a lot of people within the football club failing to deliver in their duty right now as well, and the focus will turn on them.”

Boyd added: “There’s fingerprints from other people over some of the signings that have arrived at Rangers.

“When you think of (Youssef) Chermiti, for £9million, you’ve got to be looking for more. You’ve got to be looking for somebody that’s going to come in and start and have an impact. You’re more or less looking for the finished article, not a project.

“Rangers recruitment, they’ve tried to hit the jackpot with every single signing, bringing them in, giving them an opportunity to try and move them on for bigger money.

“You need to have a core at this football club that allows you to build from within, and that has been lost.”

Dean Huijsen 'politely declined' Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Bayern Munich offers to wait for 'dream' Real Madrid move

Dean Huijsen turned down Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Bayern Munich to secure a move to Real Madrid, his father has confirmed. The 20-year-old centre-back joined Los Blancos this summer after an impressive season at Bournemouth, where he featured in 30 Premier League games. His dad revealed how Huijsen waited patiently for the chance to join his "dream club" despite other lucrative offers coming in first.

  • Why Huijsen chose Madrid over England’s elite

Huijsen was unveiled at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer after Madrid triggered his €60 million (£50m/$66m) release clause at Bournemouth. The Spaniard had only joined the Cherries last year from Juventus for €15m (£13m/$16m) plus bonuses, but his standout displays in the Premier League quickly attracted interest from Europe’s biggest sides. Liverpool were among the most persistent suitors, while Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham all monitored his situation closely. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund also made contact, but Huijsen kept them waiting as he hoped Madrid would come calling, a decision that ultimately paid off.

  • Getty Images Sport

Premier League stint prepared Huijsen for Madrid

The 20-year-old thrived at Bournemouth last season, playing 30 Premier League matches and helping the club finish comfortably in 10th place. He also added three FA Cup appearances, racking up more than 2,800 minutes on the pitch, scoring three goals and providing two assists. His exposure to top-level players such as Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah shaped him into a more complete defender.

  • Huijsen politely rejected Europe’s top clubs to wait for Real Madrid

In an interview with , Huijsen's father and agent father explained why Bournemouth was such an important stepping stone: "We saw the opportunity of a starting spot in the Premier League, with the exciting and compelling chance of playing against top-tier strikers, starting with Haaland, Salah, and Isak. Furthermore, the Bournemouth manager is Portuguese player Tiago Pinto, formerly of Roma. A significant development path was in the offing for Dean, who actually played 32 games with 3 goals and 2 assists for the Cherry shirt. He also played 3 more FA Cup matches, totaling 2,800 minutes on the pitch."

He then revealed why his son turned down some of Europe’s biggest clubs: "These excellent performances earned him a contract with the most famous and successful club on the planet. Many of the big names in European football wanted him (Chelsea, Liverpool, Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle United, etc.), but he politely declined every offer, waiting for 'that' team to arrive, the 'team' of his dreams, the biggest and most fascinating: Real Madrid."

Madrid’s defensive outlook with Huijsen in place

The Spaniard has already slotted seamlessly into Xabi Alonso’s defence, helping Los Blancos win six of their first seven La Liga fixtures this season. His arrival strengthens a backline that has been consistently tested by injuries in recent years, and his versatility could prove vital in both domestic and European competitions.

Madrid face Kairat Almaty in the Champions League before turning their attention to Villarreal in La Liga, with Huijsen expected to keep his place as Madrid aim to build momentum across all fronts.

Forget Ousmane Dembele! PSG team-mates Vitinha or Achraf Hakim would be more deserving Ballon d'Or winners than the French favourite

Say what you will about the merits of the Ballon d'Or, but last year's ceremony was undeniably dramatic. The event organisers, France Football, have always insisted that "no player or club knows who has won the Ballon d'Or" before the victor is announced on stage – but Real Madrid refused to even turn up after learning hours in advance that Rodri had beaten Vinicius Jr to the men's prize.

"It is clear that Ballon d'Or-UEFA does not respect Real Madrid," an unnamed club source told . "And Real Madrid does not go where it is not respected." It was all very undignified and amusing, particularly when one considers that the supposedly disrespected Real were named Team of the Year at the very same ceremony they boycotted.

However, Rodri's shock success also suggested that Ballon d'Or voters are no longer as obsessed with forwards as they once were. Is there a chance, then, that we could see another surprise winner this year?

Ousmane Dembele is the understandable favourite to lift the trophy after scoring more goals than anyone else during Paris Saint-Germain's treble triumph – but was the Frenchman really their best player last season? Surely Vitinha or Achraf Hakimi would be more deserving of the ultimate individual accolade in football if we're looking at this from a purely sporting perspective?…

Getty ImagesBelated 'mental breakthrough'

Dembele would certainly make for a popular winner – and one hell of a story. The worst signing in Barcelona's history has belatedly realised his potential in Paris. Luis Enrique's "idea of the century" certainly helped, with the Spaniard ingeniously taking Dembele off the wing and moving him into the centre of the attack, where he's done more damage than ever before.

However, the notoriously profligate Dembele has also had, as Kylian Mbappe labelled it, "a mental breakthrough" – and not just in front of goal. The 28-year-old has finally grown up, finally understood the importance of hard work, and finally realised that only by sorting himself out off the field could he truly thrive on it.

Barcelona may still be bitter over the way in which an ill-disciplined Dembele, by his own admission, "wasted five years of his career" at Camp Nou – before then short-changing the Catalan club when he moved to Parc des Princes. However, Dembele's particular tale of redemption is a narrative that will doubtless appeal to a lot of voters.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesSensational – since the turn of the year

It's not as if Dembele didn't post fantastic numbers last season either. He finished the 2024-25 campaign with 37 goals and 16 assists for club and country to his name – and that impressive haul included hugely significant strikes against Manchester City, Stuttgart, Liverpool and Arsenal during PSG's maiden Champions League win.

Dembele, then, deserves credit for stepping up when it mattered most, but it should not be forgotten that he only really caught fire in January, with 35 of his 51 direct goal involvements at club level for last season arriving after the turn of the year. Luis Enrique even joked at one point, "You'd have to ask Ousmane what he ate for Christmas!"

Amid all of the hysteria surrounding his revival, it's often overlooked that Dembele was left out of the squad for the matchday-two meeting with Arsenal for disciplinary reasons, and sent off in the November 26 loss at Bayern Munich that left his team at serious risk of European elimination.

Getty Images SportStill something to prove

Above all else, though, Dembele simply hasn't yet achieved the same level of sustained excellence as either Hakimi or Vitinha. Whereas both men can lay claim to being the best players in the world in their respective positions, Dembele most certainly cannot.

There were more consistent forwards in European last season than the France international – Mohamed Salah, Raphinha, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe all have the statistics to prove it – while not once did Dembele produce the kind of breath-taking displays with which Lamine Yamal wowed the watching world.

Furthermore, while Dembele may have provided the finishing touch on so many occasions, and pressed wonderfully well from the front for PSG, he was by no means their only outstanding attacker. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue were both brilliant – as was Bradley Barcola before losing a bit of momentum in the closing weeks of the campaign.

Hakimi and Vitinha, though, were the key cogs in Luis Enrique's winning machine.

Getty Images SportTotal footballer

Trent Alexander-Arnold says he wants to become the first right-back to win the Ballon d'Or, but if anyone is going to do it, it's going to be Hakimi – because he is on a whole other level to any of his peers.

For example, in last season's Champions League, the Moroccan won the ball back more times (110) than any other player, while he was also directly involved in more goals (nine) than any other defender. Hakimi is essentially a total footballer, utterly at ease in any area of the field, both in and out of possession. As a result, he has become utterly integral to the way in which PSG not only defend – but also attack.

"Hakimi is not really a full-back," Luis Enrique admitted last month. "He has freedom: with the ball, he can be whatever he wants to be." In short, there is no more creative, complete or influential defender in the game today.

Derby County in contact to sign in-demand "leader" who Eustace knows well

Despite already welcoming as many as four fresh faces this summer, Derby County have now reportedly initiated contact to sign another Championship rival.

Who Derby County have signed this summer

It’s been a busy summer for the Rams so far, having signed Andreas Weimann, Danny Batth, Richard O’Donnell and Carlton Morris to get off to an excellent start. All four players have a lot of experience in the Championship and all four could make an instant impact on John Eustace’s side as a result – starting in pre-season.

Those at Pride Park just have a matter of days before their pre-season fixtures get underway and a full month until their Championship campaign commences with a trip to Stoke City.

The next month is, therefore, crucial and any business must get done before that Stoke trip arrives if Eustace wants to start the season with a settled side ready to avoid the drop and more.

Perhaps the most impressive to arrive so far, Morris told Derby’s official website after putting pen to paper: “It’s a massive club that I’ve heard a lot of good things about. When they came in for me, it was a bit of a no-brainer, really.”

After suffering relegation with Luton Town last season, the forward will be keen to avoid suffering the same fate at Pride Park. Instead, his sights should be set on causing plenty of upsets alongside the rest of Eustace’s side.

Even after welcoming Morris and others, however, Derby still reportedly have unfinished business in the transfer window and could yet sign their fifth EFL rival in the coming weeks.

Derby County initiate contact to sign Brittain

According to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph, Derby have now initiated contact to sign Callum Brittain from Blackburn Rovers this summer. The Rams already set their sights on Brittain earlier this summer and are joined by Wrexham and Middlesbrough in the race to sign the right-back, who Blackburn are keen to keep hold of ahead of next season, but the Rams have now made a move.

Given that Brittain is into the final year of his current deal at Ewood Park, Blackburn may have no choice but to sell one of their key men this summer and that’s where Derby could take full advantage.

At 27 years old, the defender would once again bring plenty of experience and, more importantly, experience playing under Eustace. The Blackburn man featured 43 times for the current Derby boss during their time together in Lancashire and could now get the chance to reunite with his former manager at Pride Park.

Having previously dubbed Brittain a “leader”, Eustace will know more than most exactly what he could add to the current Derby side.
