A better hire than Mourinho: 4-3-3 manager now wants the Rangers job

Glasgow Rangers face arguably their most important summer in recent memory. Barry Ferguson’s interim spell will finish at the end of the season, which means that the Ibrox side will be looking for a permanent manager.

The news story which has dominated the previous few weeks was whether or not the 49ers Enterprises would finalise their proposed takeover of the club heading into the summer.

The latest on Rangers' prospective takeover by the 49ers

An update given by the Scottish Sun a few days ago stated that Andrew Cavenagh and the San Francisco 49ers have secured the required shares to complete their takeover at Rangers.

The American consortium has acquired 51% of the Gers and is expected to complete the multimillion-pound deal by the end of next month.

Firstly, they will have to bring in a new manager to the club, especially with pre-season looming on the horizon.

After several poor managerial decisions, this next one has to be spot on, otherwise the Gers will continue to see Celtic motor away, hoovering up all the Champions League cash and winning title after title.

A couple of names have been linked with a move to Glasgow, but one stands out among the others, especially with his history…

Will Rangers really appoint Jose Mourinho?

Three Premier Leagues, two Champions Leagues, a La Liga title, two UEFA Cups/Europa League crowns. The list of Jose Mourinho’s achievements in the game are second to very few.

The truth is, he has won just a single trophy since the start of the 2017/18 campaign, and that was the Conference League with AS Roma in May 2022.

He showed plenty of respect when Rangers knocked Fenerbahçe out of the Europa League at the last-16 stage in March, even coming into the dressing room to offer congratulations and wish the squad well going forwards.

Mourinho has always preferred a defensive style of play, and given what the Ibrox support have been witness to in recent years, this won’t exactly be music to their ears, that’s for sure.

Of course, it may lead to more success domestically, but going for a manager who is keen on attacking football and has a proper philosophy would be the ideal appointment for the long-term future.

Mourinho rarely hangs around longer than three seasons, but this team requires a manager who is in it for the long haul. Someone who can build a dynasty that will challenge Celtic over the coming years.

Could Gerrard do it again?

Nathan Patterson, Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard now open to a Rangers return

According to TEAMtalk, the Light Blues are after a high-profile manager to take the reins ahead of the 2025/26 season, which means a return for Gerrard is on the cards.

The report goes on to state that the former manager of the Gers would be very open to a return to the club that he managed between 2018 and 2021, winning a single Premiership title during that spell.

His departure in November 2021 was arguably due to the fact that he wasn’t properly backed that summer, having led Rangers to their first domestic title in a decade, yet things would be better this time around.

Gerrard isn’t the only big name that has been mentioned with regard to the job, either. TEAMtalk understands that the aforementioned Mourinho is another manager who would be open to a move to Glasgow, although this would be more difficult to get over the line.

He has a contract with Fener until 2026, which means the Ibrox side would have to pay substantial compensation to lure him away. His wages would also be an issue.

Mourinho may be the headline name, but his style and combustible nature might not go down too well with the Gers faithful.

Why Rangers return for Gerrard makes sense

Gerrard may have failed at his previous two jobs with Al-Ettifaq and Aston Villa since leaving Glasgow in 2021, but his appointment could mirror that of Celtic bringing Brendan Rodgers back to the club.

The former Liverpool captain may have taken a few years to achieve success at Rangers, but those were spent building a team which could go toe-to-toe with their domestic rivals.

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

Throughout his three-year spell with the club, Gerrard won seven of his 12 games against Celtic, losing just four. Two of those came during his first season when his squad was arguably at its weakest.

A lack of success against the Parkhead outfit is why the fans turned on managers such as Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale and finally Phillipe Clement. Gerrard certainly wouldn’t be fazed by Rodgers’ side, that much is certain.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

His preferred system is a 4-3-3, which worked wonders for him, especially during the title-winning 2020/21 campaign.

Alfredo Morelos was often flanked by Ryan Kent on the left and Joe Aribo or Ianis Hagi on the right. Steven Davis and Glen Kamara operated at the heart of the midfield and provided superb defensive support.

Add in the likes of Connor Goldson and Filip Helander at the centre of the defence and Allan McGregor in goal, it was perhaps no wonder the club conceded just 13 goals throughout the entire campaign in the league.

This sort of formation would work wonders with the current squad, especially as Gerrard would hopefully get free rein in the transfer market to bring in his own transfer targets ahead of next season.

Much will depend on other managers who may become linked and show interest in the role over the next few weeks, but at this moment in time, Gerrard is the one who stands out.

He knows the club, knows how to beat Celtic on a regular basis and more importantly, knows how to win a league championship.

These three factors could prove to be a massive advantage when it comes to staking his claim for a return to the Glasgow side. Will it happen? Only time will tell.

Out-of-form Colin de Grandhomme stares at uncertain NZ future

With better options available, the 35-year-old is likely to be dropped for New Zealand’s immediate assignments

Deivarayan Muthu14-Sep-2021Colin de Grandhomme was an unsung stalwart of New Zealand’s 2019 World Cup campaign, but his form and fitness have plummeted drastically since. Form-wise, it has never been as poor as in the recent Bangladesh tour, where he scrounged scores of 1, 8, 0, 0 and 9 in the five T20Is. Left-arm fingerspinner Nasum Ahmed alone dismissed de Grandhomme four times while conceding one run off nine balls to him.In the series opener, he attempted to slog his way out of trouble, but holed out to deep square-leg – the only fielder in the outfield on the leg side in the powerplay. He was caught at the same position in the second game and was then pinned by a slower offcutter from Mohammad Saifuddin in the third. In the last two games of the series, he was clueless against the turning ball on the grippy Dhaka tracks. In the absence of a number of regulars, de Grandhomme was given the extra responsibility to bat up the order as the senior-most member in the side, but the returns were disappointing, to say the least.Related

He didn’t have much to do with the ball either, bowling merely 3.4 overs across the five games. He belatedly came to bowl four of those balls after fast bowler Scott Kuggeleijn felt some discomfort in the third match. And on the field, de Grandhomme wasn’t too sharp either, dropping a simple catch offered by Liton Das when he was on 0 in the second game. The Bangladesh opener went on to make 33 off 29 balls, setting the tone for their narrow victory.Former New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter and commentator Ian Smith was critical of de Grandomme’s form – or the lack thereof – in the lead-up to the final T20I. “I don’t think he’s adding anything to the mix, particularly in these conditions,” Smith said on a podcast with Mike Hesson. “He doesn’t bowl spin, he’s not scoring any runs; he’s a handy fieldsman we know that, but can I risk him on the fact that he will come off one time out of ten? I don’t think so.”Every now and then, players are not suited to conditions and when they’re not playing well enough, you give them a spell [out of the XI]. If I think on that side, I’m probably thinking Colin de Grandhomme is not going to win me a game and that’s what you want to do in limited-overs cricket – win you a game. Those scores reflect he’s not doing that, so the all-round side of the game is negated by the fact that they don’t need his type of bowling in these conditions. I’d leave him out, to be brutally honest.”ESPNcricinfo LtdHesson reasoned that de Grandhomme was someone who thrived on game-time, which he missed in the last international summer because of an ankle surgery. He did have some game-time with Southern Brave in the inaugural Hundred and got all five matches against Bangladesh, but hasn’t been able to break out of the funk yet. With Daryl Mitchell back in the side for the T20I leg of the Pakistan tour, de Grandhomme could potentially be dropped from the XI in conditions that are unlikely to be too different from those in Bangladesh. In the absence of de Grandhomme, Mitchell became New Zealand’s frontline allrounder, alongside Jimmy Neesham, in the past home summer, his vital contributions culminating in a first central contract and a T20 World Cup spot. So, is there really a way back for de Grandhomme after the ODIs in Pakistan? Probably not in the near future, with New Zealand set to fly out to India after the T20 World Cup. Batters with much tighter techniques have been ruthlessly exposed by R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel in Indian conditions, after all.It helps New Zealand that they aren’t short of all-round options. Mitchell showcased his finishing skills on his first overseas tour in 2019 in Sri Lanka and now left-arm fingerspin-bowling allrounder Rachin Ravindra is slowly bedding into the set-up. Mitchell Santner’s Test stocks are weary at the moment, but the team management sees him as a future leader in white-ball cricket. de Grandhomme would still have a role to play on the green pitches in red-ball cricket in New Zealand, but the clock is ticking for the 35-year-old.

Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Struggles in Home Run Derby Debut

Jazz Chisholm Jr. had a pretty disappointing outing in his Home Run Derby debut.

The New York Yankees star only ended up hitting three total home runs during his three-minute period and was eliminated in the first round. He swung 37 times, but only crushed three of those pitches out of Truist Park. His three homers traveled 463 feet, 409 feet and 400 feet, and he wasn't able to hit one out during the bonus round.

Chisholm's outing caused him to instantly be eliminated from advancing in the Derby. All of the other seven participants hit at least 15 home runs in the first round.

Here's a summary of Chisholm's hits, via Home Run Report.

Chisholm's three home runs hit from 37 swings were the fewest in the first round since 2014, according to Jayson Stark. It's important to remember the format was different then, too.

It doesn't seem like Chisholm took the advice from his Yankees teammate and 2017 HR Derby winner Aaron Judge in regards to having fun and pretending to just take batting practice. Judge was there on the field watching Chisholm, and he was there to console him right after his round.

Farke’s new Buendia: Leeds lining up move for “sensational” UCL star

Leeds United reportedly submitted a late offer in an attempt to sign Aston Villa attacking midfielder Emiliano Buendia at the end of the summer transfer window, only to be blocked by their Premier League rivals.

The Argentina international scored 24 goals and provided 41 assists in 121 matches for Norwich under Daniel Farke, per Transfermarkt, and the German was looking for a reunion with him at Elland Road.

Unfortunately, Villa decided to keep hold of the 28-year-old star, which turned out to be a brilliant decision. Per Sofascore, Buendia has delivered five goals and three assists in all competitions for the Villans this season, recently scoring the winner against Arsenal.

Whilst the former Norwich star is now out of their reach, due to his fantastic form for Villa, the Whites could land their own version of him next month.

Leeds eyeing move for Champions League forward

The January transfer window is only a matter of weeks away from opening for business, and the West Yorkshire outfit have their eye on a potential target to add more quality to their squad.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to TEAMtalk, Leeds United are one of a number of clubs lining up a move to sign Bodo/Glimt star Jens Petter Hauge in the winter window.

The report claims that Crystal Palace, Brentford, Leeds, and Brighton are all interested in signing the former AC Milan attacking midfielder, as they look to bolster their respective squads ahead of the second half of the season.

It adds that the Whites were keen on signing the Norwegian talent back in 2020, before his move to Milan, and they are looking to finally snap him up, five years later.

TEAMtalk, however, does not reveal how much money Bodo/Glimt are set to demand from any of the interested Premier League teams, should offers come in for his services.

Why Leeds should sign Jens Petter Hauge

Leeds should test the Norwegian side’s resolve with an offer for Hauge when the January transfer window opens for business, because he has the quality to be Farke’s new Buendia.

Like the Villa star, the attacking midfielder is a versatile playmaker who can play on the left, through the middle, or off the right to provide goals and assists on a regular basis.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig once described him as a “sensational” player who had lost his way, and the 26-year-old star is seemingly back to his ‘sensational’ ways in Norway.

Since returning to Bodo/Glimt in January 2024, Hauge has been in impressive form that suggests that he could be an exciting addition to Farke’s squad ahead of the second half of the 2025/26 campaign.

The Norway international, who has been the most prolific dribbler in the competition, has scored three goals in six matches in the Champions League this season, after delivering four assists in two Champions League qualifiers, per Transfermarkt.

Since his return to Bodo/Glimt, Hauge has produced 24 goals and 22 assists in 93 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, which shows that he has provided goals and assists on a regular basis from attacking midfield positions.

As you can see in the table above, the Leeds transfer target ended the 2025 Eliteserien campaign with 16 goals and ‘big chances’ created combined in 28 outings for Bodo/Glimt.

This shows that, like Buendia, Hauge is another right-footed attacking midfielder who can provide quality in the final third as both a scorer and a creator in equal measure, which makes him an incredibly valuable player.

Of course, he is unproven in the Premier League and it remains to be seen whether or not he can translate his current performances over to English football, but a return of three goals in six Champions League matches, including a goal against Borussia Dortmund this week, shows that he can perform at a high level.

This suggests that Hauge is a player who is worth taking a gamble on in the January transfer window in an attempt to add more quality to the side at the top end of the pitch.

Leeds United are eyeing up a player from Scotland who could be their next Mark Viduka-type signing.

Leeds were unable to sign Buendia from Villa in the summer to reunite him with Farke, but the German head coach may see shades of the Argentine magician in this Bodo/Glimt star.

Frank 'losing respect' of Tottenham dressing room as ex-player makes scathing claim

Former Tottenham star Ramon Vega has launched a scathing attack on Spurs boss Thomas Frank after their 5-3 loss to PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Tottenham show flashes but fall to PSG defeat in Paris

Spurs’ unbeaten European run came to a grinding halt in spectacular fashion as the European champions powered to a thrilling victory at the Parc des Princes, with midfielder Vitinha stealing the headlines by scoring a sensational hat-trick.

Frank’s young side showed tremendous character by twice taking the lead in a pulsating encounter, only to be overwhelmed by PSG’s attacking quality during a devastating second-half spell.

The match showcased both the promise and vulnerability of Spurs’ inexperienced squad, with teenagers Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray impressing before defensive lapses proved costly.

Vitinha’s treble told the story of the evening. The Portuguese thundered home a spectacular long-range equaliser just before halftime, curled in his second to restore parity after the break, then sealed his hat-trick from the penalty spot following Cristian Romero’s handball, with his performance epitomizing PSG’s clinical edge when opportunities arose.

Randal Kolo Muani was another positive for Tottenham, scoring twice against his parent club and notching an assist for Richarlison to briefly give Spurs hope of an unlikely win.

However, Fabian Ruiz’s composed finish and William Pacho’s close-range effort during PSG’s dominant period ultimately proved decisive.

The defeat leaves Tottenham precariously positioned sixteenth in the league phase standings after five games, significantly increasing pressure on Frank ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Fulham.

The Dane has attracted, to say the least, very mixed reviews since replacing Ange Postecoglou in the summer. Frank’s spell has been marred by concerns surrounding creativity and a ‘boring’ style of play, with Spurs nearly bottom of the pile for numerous attacking metrics so far this season.

This includes an expected goals (xG) of just 11.0, which is the fourth worst in the entire Premier League.

Many are wondering if Frank really is the right man to take them forward, and their crushing North London derby loss last weekend didn’t exactly plead his case.

Ramon Vega makes scathing Thomas Frank claim after Tottenham defeat

Speaking to talkSPORT, former Lilywhites player Vega made his thoughts on Frank crystal clear this morning — even stating that Postecoglou was the better man for the Spurs job.

Vega also says that the dressing room doesn’t appear to have that same respect for Frank, with the pundit questioning his ability to be a leader.

Given Frank is now starting to attract these kinds of opinions, absolutely nothing but a win will do at Fulham this weekend.

However, he’ll have to make do without star defender Cristian Romero, who’s suspended for the clash.

Jude Bellingham's late equaliser still infuriates Elche two days later as coach slams officials over 'clear foul' in Real Madrid draw

Elche head coach Eder Sarabia has still not gotten over the 2-2 draw against Real Madrid at the weekend, which saw Xabi Alonso's men come back twice from behind. Los Blancos equalised just three minutes from the end of normal time thanks to Jude Bellingham, but controversy erupted during and after the game as the Elche players and manager blasted the officials for what they believed to be an incorrect decision.

Madrid held to a draw by Elche after controversial Bellingham goal

Real Madrid endured yet another frustrating evening at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero on Sunday, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by the newly-promoted but daring Elche. The result stretched their winless run across competitions to three games.

After a goalless first half, former Real Madrid youth player and Elche captain Aleix Febas fired the hosts into the lead just eight minutes after the restart, capping off a brilliant team move that cut Madrid open. Dean Huijsen then pulled things back, scoring his first goal for Los Blancos in the 78th minute. However, Sarabia's troops didn't budge. Substitute Alvaro Rodriguez, a La Fabrica product who has featured in several games for Madrid, scored a great individual goal just six minutes later to restore Elche's lead.

That wasn't the end of the drama. In the 87th minute, Madrid came back from behind for the second time in the game, courtesy of a Bellingham equaliser. Controversy, however, ensued, as the Elche players religiously protested Vinicius Junior's challenge on goalkeeper Inaki Pena, which left the latter bleeding from his nose.

The pleas from Elche players could only go in vain. The goal stood, and the match finished all-square, leaving the home team's head coach furious after the game.

"It's a clear foul. Not a normal part of the game. That's what VAR is for. It's a very clear foul; it hits the goalkeeper and even draws blood. It's crystal clear," ranted Sarabia. "It's to Inaki's credit that he said it was a normal part of the game, but it really wasn't. It's a clear foul.

"I'm not at all happy with the result, especially considering the decisive moments of the match. Vinicius's foul for the 2-2 equalizer was crystal clear. Inaki didn't see the play, but it wasn't just a normal part of the game, it was a clear foul. It makes me angry to waste time on these things, but you take the lead twice and you feel that there were factors that influenced the final result. It makes you angry."

AdvertisementAFPSarabia takes his anger to social media

Sarabia took to his official account to express his contempt over the controversial refereeing over the weekend. He wrote: "My apologies to those who make decisions, but for more than 25 years now, "voluntariness/intentionality" has been removed from the regulations (except for hands). Therefore, the fact that an action is "fortuitous" is not a correct argument for deciding whether it is an infraction or not."

Alonso reflects on Madrid's poor form

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso addressed the media after the game and assured that the team is not in a crisis. "We haven't fallen apart," he told reporters. “That’s football. After a good run, we’re now getting results that aren’t what we wanted. But we still know what we want. We have to keep moving forward.

“We're not happy because we know perfectly well that we always want to win, and when we don't, we can't be happy. There are still many games left before the end of the year, and we have to start thinking about the next one by analysing what we've done today.

“The team never gave up. We’re still competing. We know that the context of each game is different. Obviously, the result could be better. We're aware of that and we're self-critical, but the direction is clear, the spirit remains good and we have to respond in the face of adversity. This is Real Madrid and every unfavourable result attracts criticism, which we have to live with. We want to improve. The team never gave up.

“The connection is improving because we have more time, we interact more and we're getting to know each other better. We're all in the same boat, everyone together in the same direction. We celebrate victories, we suffer, as we did today, and we're not happy when we don't get the desired result. The connection is good, the day-to-day is good. We need to turn this moment around a little bit and we have the opportunity to do so starting in Athens.”

Yankees Reportedly Made $760 Million Offer to Juan Soto Before He Signed With Mets

Juan Soto is a New York Met.

The superstar outfielder agreed to a record-setting 15-year, $765 million contract to officially put an end to his free agency saga and make the move to Queens.

The New York Yankees, where Soto played last season, were in the running right up until the end, according to a report from Jon Heyman. The NY Post's MLB insider reports that the Yankees submitted an offer to Soto worth $760 million over 16 seasons. The 26-year-old ultimately chose to take the deal from Steve Cohen and the Mets, where he figures to spend the rest of his career.

It's a difference of $3.5 million in average annual value.

There had been inklings that Soto's deal could eclipse the $800 million mark, but Cohen and Co. were able to get in under that figure at $765 million. Still, it trumps Shohei Ohtani's $700 million deal as the largest in professional sports history.

Soto's deal reportedly does not include any deferred money, so he'll collect the total value of the contract by its end in 2041.

This past year, Soto launched a career-high 41 home runs to go with 109 RBIs and a .989 OPS in what ended up being his lone season as a Yankee.

'I feel like I can finally breathe!' – Morgan Gibbs-White delighted with Nottingham Forest's start under Sean Dyche after ending Ange Postecoglou nightmare

Morgan Gibbs-White helped Nottingham Forest to a welcome win under new manager Sean Dyche and admitted afterwards that it feels like he and the rest of the Reds squad can "finally breathe" as they put Ange Postecoglou's disastrous spell as head coach behind them. Dyche's first game at the helm delivered an impressive 2-0 victory over Porto in the Europa League.

Nuno & Postecoglou gone: Forest onto third manager of the season

Forest headed into that contest ready to open another new era on Trentside under their third permanent boss of the 2025-26 campaign. Nuno Espirito Santo, who guided them into Europe last season, was relieved of his duties in early September. Reins were then passed to former Tottenham manager Postecoglou.

The Australian tactician lasted just 39 days in the City Ground dugout, with a run of eight winless matches seeing him make the wrong kind of history. A 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League proved to be the final straw, with Reds owner Evangelos Marinakis taking decisive action once again.

  • Immediate impact: Dyche enjoys perfect start at Forest

Former Forest youth team player Dyche, who once worked under the legendary Brian Clough, is now back in familiar surroundings – bringing former fan favourites Ian Woan and Steve Stone with him. They got off to the perfect start against Porto in front of a raucous home support that have a cause to get behind again.

Fans are buying into the Dyche project, with the players also very much on board. Gibbs-White admitted as much when – having netted the first goal under Forest’s new boss – he told : "I feel like I can finally breathe. It's been a difficult couple of months here with all the changes that have happened, the bad performances. So just happy to get our first win in nine games and to do it here at the City Ground and the European nights, it's an incredible feeling and there's no one here that deserves it more than the stadium, the fans. So we're delighted to get three points on the table and those three points are for the fans for sticking by us."

  • Getty

Back to basics: Forest fans & players believe again

Gibbs-White, who started as captain for Forest against Porto, added on the impact that Dyche has made across a few days in charge – with the Reds going back to basics: "That was the first thing the gaffer came in and said, ‘last season you had a real identity, a real structure to how you play’ and he wants to bring that in, and he also wants to build on top of that, and I think we showed that tonight. We were solid, hard to break down and when we went forward we could have been a bit more clinical, a bit better, but we take the three points and we move on.

"It's only been one game and we've only had a few training sessions, but you can feel the morale within the stadium, you can feel the morale within the group – it feels a lot higher, a lot more energetic. It feels a lot more positive and that's the way it needs to be and it needs to stay like that for us to continue and try to push forward. That's credit to the manager."

Postecoglou holds the unwanted honour of being the shortest-serving permanent manager in Premier League history – with Sam Allardyce’s 30-day reign at Leeds in 2023 seeing him fill an interim role at Elland Road.

Dyche is looking to shake Forest from what has been a nightmare start to the new season, with the early signs being that he is the man to get the Reds back on track – with loyal supporters on side.

Dyche said of calling the shots for the first time: "When you are on the side you don't hear every word, you hear a noise and you know if it's a positive noise or a negative noise. I'm not here to judge or question anything, just deliver what I can to the job. It's nice when they support you from the off, winning helps.

"These fans are pretty fair, win, lose or draw if they see a team out there wearing the shirt with pride and I think they'll accept that. To get it off with a good performance and a win is very pleasing for them. If they can accept me and my staff and what's going on that's got to be a bonus. Hopefully it will fast track the feeling around the ground."

Dyche’s first Premier League game as Forest boss will see a trip to Bournemouth taken in on Sunday, with the Reds currently sat inside the relegation zone and in need of a spark to make them upwardly mobile once more.
