North Zone look the strongest of the BCL teams

A look at the four zonal teams in the Bangladesh Cricket League, the country’s second first-class tournament, which starts on Thursday

Mohammad Isam26-Dec-2012Mushfiqur Rahim will lead North Zone•AFP

North ZoneMushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, will lead the northern region and will have several of his Rajshahi Division team-mates in the side, though there is a fair smattering of players from Rangpur Division. Junaid Siddique, Jahurul Islam, Naeem Islam, Farhad Hossain, Shafiul Islam and Saqlain Sajib make up a side that can be considered the strongest on paper because of their first-class record.Youngsters like allrounder Mahmudul Hasan, left-arm spinner Sanjamul Islam and batsman Litton Kumar Das will add variety to the squad while the experience of Farhad Reza and Suhrawadi Shuvo makes it a tough job for the team’s selectors to pick an eleven without leaving out two or three big-name players.East ZoneNafees Iqbal is the captain of a team that has to surprise the other three teams in the competition in order to progress. Mominul Haque and Faisal Hossain are the most in-form batsmen in the squad and a lot will rest on the shoulders of this duo, one young and one experienced. The older lot including the likes of Aftab Ahmed, Alok Kapali and the captain Nafees will be expected to bat as they usually do, though Aftab and Nafees haven’t been successful first-class players in the last few years. East’s strength would be in the bowling, especially with left-arm spinner Enamul Haque, the National Cricket League’s leading wicket-taker for two seasons now, to take up the responsibility. The language barrier between the players will require a lot of adjustment. Chittagong and Sylhet are regions with very different dialects from each other, as well as the Bengali that is spoken in the other parts of the country.Central ZoneBangladesh vice-captain Mahmudullah will lead a side made up of players from Dhaka Metropolis and Dhaka Division, this year’s runners-up side in the NCL. It is an experienced side with ten international cricketers, though the uncapped Marshall Ayub also adds batting strength.Marshall, the NCL’s top-scorer with 604 runs at an average of 67.11, has scored a double-hundred and a century in his eleven innings for Dhaka Metropolis, while Mehrab Hossain jnr and Shamsur Rahman will also take charge of the batting order. The bowling is spin-based with left-arm spinners Mosharraf Hossain and Elias Sunny, though Talha Jubair and Shahadat Hossain are quick bowlers who are in form. They have all played together in the Dhaka Division side before the BCB formed the Dhaka Metropolis side last season, so familiarity won’t be a problem for these players.South ZoneThis team consists of players from the defending NCL champions Khulna Division, and many of them have done well individually. Barisal Division is the other team in the franchise, and will be represented by the likes of Sohag Gazi and Kamrul Islam Rabbi, among others. The Khulna players will do most of the running with the bat, as the likes of Imrul Kayes, Mohammad Mithun and Tushar Imran have been scoring well in the NCL, while allrounders Ziaur Rahman and Gazi will balance the side. Left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak will lead the side and will form an excellent spin attack with Murad Khan and the offspin of Gazi. The big miss, however, will be Shakib Al Hasan, though it is likely that if South Zone make it to the final, he would have sufficiently recovered from his shin injury by then. Shahriar Nafees, the Bangladesh No. 3 batsman, has also not been considered till now, because of his unavailability for Barisal. It was learned that the franchise are likely to include him from the second round.

Injured Umesh Yadav out of third Test

Fast bowler Umesh Yadav, who missed India’s second Test against England due to a lower back injury, will miss at least the third Test of the series too

India’s selectors will have to decide on the third spinner’s slot•AFP

Fast bowler Umesh Yadav, who was ruled out of India’s second Test against England due to a lower back injury, will miss at least the third Test of the series too, which starts in Kolkata on December 5.Yadav, the most effective of India’s pace bowlers in the series-opener in Ahmedabad, will not recover in time despite there being a prolonged break ahead of the Test. “The injury is more serious than it was thought to be, so the team will have to make do without him for at least another Test,” an insider told ESPNcricinfo. It was learnt that Yadav, who has been advised “at least 10 days’ rest” by a specialist in Mumbai, will get a short break along with his team-mates. While England will remain in Mumbai before leaving for Kolkata on November 30, India’s players have been given time off and have been asked to report in Kolkata on December 2. Yadav will join the squad in Kolkata to be monitored by physiotherapist Evan Speechley*.As a result of Yadav’s injury, the national selection panel will have another reason to ponder over the bowling attack when they sit down, on Tuesday, to finalise the India squad for the remaining two Tests and the two Twenty20 internationals that follow before England fly home for Christmas. After Yadav was ruled out of the Wankhede Test, on the eve of the game, the team management chose to ignore Ishant Sharma and Ashok Dinda, who was called in as late replacement for him, and played all the three spinners in the XI instead. However, the trio of Pragyan Ojha, R Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh was outdone by England’s Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar, meaning changes are on the cards.Sandeep Patil, India’s chief selector, and his colleagues will have to decide whether one of Piyush Chawla or Amit Mishra, the legbreak bowlers who have proven their fitness in the Ranji Trophy, is a better choice than Harbhajan as the third spinner. Returning to Test cricket after a 14-month break, Harbhajan returned match figures of 23-1-84-2, with lower-order batsmen Stuart Broad and James Anderson his only victims. Harbhajan, though, is one game shy of becoming the tenth India cricketer to have made 100 Test appearances. Dinda is set to remain in the fifteen. There are unlikely to be any changes made to the batting line-up, despite the top order’s failure at the Wankhede. With India having failed to impress for the third consecutive time in the World Twenty20, in Sri Lanka in September-October, it will be interesting to see the new selection panel’s T20 combination. These selectors are set to pick a squad for the shortest format for the first time, and it might not be a surprise if there is a major shake-up to that unit, which failed to make it past the Super Eights stage at the World T20.*18:19GMT, November 26: This article has been updated

Jadeja first Indian to get three triple centuries

A round-up of the fifth round of Ranji Trophy’s Group A matches on December 2, 2012

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Dec-2012
ScorecardRavindra Jadeja became the first Indian batsman to make three triple hundreds in first-class cricket during his unbeaten knock of 320 against Railways in Rajkot. Only seven batsmen in world cricket have achieved the feat before. Jadeja had also made 303* against Gujarat earlier this season. Jadeja and Kamlesh Makvana (78*) put on an unbroken 274 for the sixth wicket after veteran Shitanshu Kotak had fallen for 68. Jadeja has been at the crease for more than 11 hours, faced 491 deliveries and hit 28 fours and seven sixes. Five other Indians have made two triple hundreds each in first-class cricket – Vijay Hazare, Raman Lamba, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer.
ScorecardFast bowler Pankaj Singh took his 16th first-class five-wicket haul in his 65th game as Punjab were dismissed for 215 in reply to Rajasthan’s 222 in Mohali. Left-arm medium-pacer Aniket Choudhary had reduced Punjab to 87 for 4 before Ravi Inder Singh (85) and Gurkeerat Singh (40) steadied the innings with a partnership of 89. Choudary returned to have Gurkeerat caught behind, and Punjab collapsed after that. Ravi Inder was bowled by Rituraj Singh and Pankaj ran through the tail to end with 5 for 45. Rajasthan lost their wicketkeeper Dishant Yagnik for 32 to end on 56 for 1 at stumps.
ScorecardMumbai’s lower order stretched their first innings to 297, and spinning allrounder Ankeet Chavan claimed four wickets to bowl out Bengal for 201 at Brabourne Stadium. Bengal opener Arindam Das was stranded on 98 as the visitors lost regular wickets. Manoj Tiwary, the Bengal captain, was the only other batsman to get some sort of start, but he holed out in trying to loft Chavan down the ground for 39. Kshemal Waingankar took the last two wickets as Mumbai took a lead of 96. They also played out three overs safely in their second innings.Read more on this match here.
ScorecardCenturies from captain Parthiv Patel and Manprit Juneja boosted Gujarat to 566 against Hyderabad in Valsad. The duo added 178 for the fifth wicket. Parthiv took 144 deliveries for his 111 while Juneja made 106 off 159. Parthiv’s century was his 18th in first-class cricket, and 22-year old Juneja’s was his fourth in seven first-class games. Hyderabad lost the wicket of K Sumanth in reaching 50 for 1, with their captain Akshath Reddy motoring to 30.

Sammy leaves Gayle door ajar

West Indies’ captain Darren Sammy did nothing to quash talk after defeat at Lord’s that Chris Gayle should be invited to strengthen his side in the rest of the Test series against England

ESPNcricinfo staff21-May-2012

Chris Gayle’s involvement in the IPL with Royal Challengers Bangalore is now over•AFP

West Indies’ captain Darren Sammy did nothing to quash the theory after his side’s defeat at Lord’s that Chris Gayle should be invited to strengthen his side in the rest of the Test series against England, as well as the one-day matches that follow.Gayle’s involvement in IPL is over after Royal Challengers Bangalore were eliminated from the tournament and such has been his troubled relationship with the WICB that any emergency dash to the UK in time to play in one or both of the remaining two Tests seems hard to imagine. But Sammy refused to close the door on the possibility after West Indies’ five-wicket defeat against England at Lord’s put them 1-0 down in the series, suggesting that both he and the coach, Ottis Gibson, would be content to accommodate Gayle’s late arrival.”Whatever happens outside this squad takes its own course,” Sammy told Sky Sports. “Whoever comes in we will welcome them into the team and hopefully they will help. It is up to the selectors to select the team.”I think Chris has said he is available for Test cricket, one-day cricket and T20 so it is up to the selectors. We have been having some difficulties at the top of the order and if he comes in we would all welcome him, myself, Ottis and all the guys.”One change West Indies will consider for the second Test at Trent Bridge on Friday, and one which needs no political machinations, is the inclusion of Shane Shillingford, the Dominican who took ten wickets in his last Test, against Australia on his home ground in Roseau in April.Shillingford, according to Sammy, had been omitted at Lord’s partly because he could not cope with the cold weather – and with higher temperatures forecast in the build-up to Trent Bridge that could change.”Shane was experiencing a bit of difficulty gripping the ball but in the course of this Test match he has done some work and hopefully his fingers will be warm enough and ready for him to play for us in the next match,” Sammy said. “He played a crucial role in the last series and once he is ready to master the cold we will have him in.”

Pulsa, Beira-Rio!

Clarke solution to Warner problem

Australia captain Michael Clarke’s signing of a contract with the Sydney Thunder for next summer’s BBL may be the solution to an impasse that had left David Warner curiously unsigned

Australia captain Michael Clarke’s signing of a contract with the Sydney Thunder for next summer’s BBL may be the solution to an impasse that had left David Warner curiously unsigned at the end of the competition’s primary recruitment window.Clarke officially confirmed his move to the Thunder on Wednesday, and his signature grants the team the big Australian name they crave to sell their team to the public in the lead-up to season two. It was a role that had been taken up by Warner last summer when he captained the Thunder.”Playing for Sydney Thunder is a great opportunity for me to play for a team rooted in Sydney’s western suburbs as well as to support Cricket Australia in building on last year’s Big Bash success,” Clarke said. “I am really excited about playing a part in the Big Bash, particularly as it will be against the other Sydney team.”Not only do I get to play alongside superstar T20 internationals like Chris Gayle and Shahid Afridi but also with a bunch of great young guys just starting to make their mark, many of whom grew up in the west.”However Warner is understood to be keen to move across town to the Sydney Sixers for 2012-13, and had begun discussing terms with the team that lifted the inaugural BBL trophy. This is believed to have led to an untidy round of discussions between Warner, the Sixers, the Thunder and Cricket Australia, as the opening batsman’s personal preference was weighed up against his value as the face of the Thunder and its desired market in Sydney’s west.Apart from winning the BBL last summer, the Sixers cultivated a happy team environment around the SCG under the coaching of Trevor Bayliss and the wider management of Stuart Clark.By contrast, the Thunder battled for strong results and faced difficulties surrounding their home base at Sydney’s Olympic Stadium, with transport believed to be one of several issues for players.Warner, meanwhile, had also changed management since the summer, moving across from Peter Lovitt’s Driver Avenue Group to Tony Conolly’s Entourage Management, which handles the business of the Test vice-captain Shane Watson. As current members of Australia Test team, Warner and Clarke are unlikely to play more than one BBL game, the season-opening ‘derby’ between the Sixers and the Thunder at the SCG, but their presence in competition marketing and advertising is considered critical to drawing crowds to the games.Clarke’s presence at the Thunder allows the team a major Australian name on which to hang its colours, alongside the high-profile overseas imports, Gayle and Afridi. It also allows Clarke to be more firmly engaged with the western suburbs in which he grew up.Last summer Clarke chose not to take part in the BBL and concentrated his energies on making a strong start to his Test captaincy of Australia, leading the team to a 4-0 hiding of India in the series played opposite the Twenty20 competition. However he warmed to T20 later in the year, accepting Sourav Ganguly’s lucrative offer to play for Pune in the IPL.This short stint signalled Clarke’s interest in making a T20 nest for himself that may extend beyond the end of his international playing career, as it has done for the likes of Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne and Matthew Hayden.
