Tight bowling by spinners Simon Kerrigan and Arron Lilley aided by someathletic fielding helped Lancashire to defeat Derbyshire by 12 runs at Old Trafford. The young pair returned identical figures of 1 for 25 from their four oversas Steven Croft’s side restricted the visitors to 153 for 6 in reply toLightning’s 165 for nine. The win was Lancashire’s third in six games and it boosts their hopes ofqualifying the quarter-finals from the North Group. The home side’s innings was dominated by a knock of 74 by opener Stephen Moorewhose 42-ball innings included five sixes and five fours. Moore was particularly hard on David Wainwright, taking 23 runsoff the slow left-armer’s third over. But that acceleration was desperatelyneeded by a Lancashire side who had initially struggled to dominate.A modest 38 runs had been scored off the first six overs for the loss of TomSmith, Karl Brown and Simon Katich, two of the wickets falling to Tim Groenewaldwho eventually finished with 3 for 32.Moore was joined by skipper Croft and the pair added 76 runs for the fourthwicket in only 8.2 overs before offspinner Dan Redfern dismissed both batsmenin quick succession.Brief injections of acceleration were supplied by Ashwell Prince and GarethCross but Lancashire’s final total of 165 was probably little more than par on agood pitch.Derbyshire seamer Mark Turner profited from a late dash for runs andended the innings with 4 for 35 while Redfern collected 2 for 17 andoutfielder Chesney Hughes pouched three fine catches. In contrast to Lancashire’s innings, the Derbyshire reply got off to a finestart with Wes Durston hitting sixes off both Tom Smith and Kabir Ali as 54 runswere plundered off the first six overs. But the run rate slowed once Durston hadbeen trapped lbw by Kerrigan for a 29-ball 48 and the innings never quiteregained the required momentum.Shivnarine Chanderpaul made an inventive 39 off 31 balls before being run outby a direct hit from mid-on by Mitchell McClenaghan, although by then ahamstring injury had forced Chanderpaul to use a runner.Derbyshire needed 46 runs off the final four overs and skipper Wayne Madsenmade 36 in a vain effort to keep up with the asking rate as Kabir Ali andMcClenaghan applied the pressure. The New Zealand bowler finished with 2 for26 and reinforced his reputation as a very skilful seamer in short-formcricket.

Canada take honours in Auty Cup double-header

Canada won both their matches in Sunday’s Auty Cup double-header against the United States of America

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jul-2013In the Sunday double-header, Canada prevailed on both occasions, with a disciplined bowling effort from Canada’s bowlers helping them to a five-wicket win over United States of America in the first T20 match in King City. USA chose to bat, but lost regular wickets through the course of their innings. Only four batsmen were able to get into double digits as all of Canada’s bowlers struck at least once. Henry Osinde picked up figures of 2 for 23, as USA reached 106 for 9 in their 20 overs.Canada’s innings started in a similar fashion, with Rizwan Cheema out for 9 with the score on 18. However, Ruvindu Gunasekera and Usman Limbada put together a 41-run partnership to steady the innings. Gunasekera, who has been in prolific form, top-scored for Canada once again with 58 off 50 balls, as Canada reached their target inside of 17 overs. In their second match, Canada once again had the better of USA with a 78-run victory. Canada batted first, with openers Gunasekera and Cheema putting on 63 in just over five overs. Once Cheema fell, Nitish Kumar and Gunasekera put on a further 56 runs to put Canada in the ascendancy. Each of Canada’s batsmen got into double digits as they posted 189 for 5. Timil Patel had best figures of 3 for 40.Facing a steep target, USA’s chase came undone in the first couple of overs itself as they struggled to maintain the required rate while safeguarding their wickets. Only wicketkeeper Akeem Dodson played an innings of note, with his 44 off 36 balls. Salman Nazar’s 3 for 27, Harvir Baidwan’s 2 for 25 and Junaid Siddiqui’s 2 for 32 ensured USA were unable to make a decent fist of the chase.

– O time sofreu muito pouco.

Bangladesh fightback goes to plan

Bangladesh are in prime position to record a maiden victory in the country and square a series they seemed destined to lose

Firdose Moonda in Harare27-Apr-2013

Robiul Islam shouldered the burden of leading Bangladesh’s attack again•AFP

Three days ago, Zimbabwe were readying themselves to win consecutive Tests for the first time in 12 years. Now, Bangladesh are in a strong position to record a maiden victory in the country and square a series they seemed destined to lose. The turnaround has been as emphatic as it was unexpected. Bangladesh have put in an improved all-round performance, led by their strike bowler Robiul Islam and followed up through the senior batsmen. The playing field has levelled too, literally. Members of both camps confirmed a “much better” pitch in the second Test, compared to the one that was used in the first. The sideways movement and uneven bounce is gone. There is still something in it for the bowlers to make use of but an enterprising batsman can reap rewards.Shakib Al Hasan did so in both innings. He left well, accelerated at the right times and even though he gave his wicket away twice, he formed the spine the others needed. He would have been one of those that was chastened by the showing a week ago and took it upon himself to fix some of the failing of the first Test.”We were disappointed after the first Test, in all facets, but in particular our batting,” Corey Richards, the Bangladesh fielding coach, said. “We thought we had good plans and the guys wanted up to show how good they have been recently, because they were so good for us in Sri Lanka. So, they were pretty embarrassed and there was a general hunger to do better. Fortunately a bit of experience showed in Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim.”Bangladesh are 272 runs ahead and have five wickets in hand, which puts them in prime position to bat Zimbabwe out of the match. But they have been known to deal with expectation poorly in the past. This time, Richards said team management have a plan to ensure they are not overwhelmed.”Individually we’ve got what we feel is a goal-setting plan and the players have had a lot of buy-in to that,” he said “They are pretty simple and realistic goals and that makes it a lot easier to know where you are heading.”Corey Richards on Robiul Islam

Bangladesh have the series’ leading wicket-taker to thank for muscling them back into contention. So far, Robiul has taken 14 wickets at 17.14 and is the only Bangladesh seamer to have consecutive five-wicket hauls. He has also bowled an entire day of overs on his own – his 90 overs amount to more than the rest of Bangladesh’s seamers put together and he has put his hand up to lead the attack in future.
“He missed the first Test in Sri Lanka and that fired him up to become our spearhead,” Richards said. “With a few injuries, he got his opportunity here. He is a little bit older and he has got the best first-class record of any of our bowlers. He knows how to get wickets and so far on this tour he’s put the ball in the right areas more often than not and that’s what you’ve got to do in these conditions.”
While Bangladesh will rely on him to secure victory in the match, Richards is aware that he needs careful management going forward. “Robiul’s efforts have been unbelievable. Yes, he has bowled a lot of overs but he has got a lot of energy and a lot of self-belief. And he has got rhythm. When you’ve got good form and rhythm the overs seem to come easily. We will need to look after to him tonight because there’s a big job for him to do in this match.
“In an ideal world, it’s not great for one of your strike bowlers to bowl lots and lots of overs but we’ve needed him to and he has done it. After this fourth innings, he is not going to have a lot of cricket for a while so he will have a break.”

The immediate one is to get “a lead of over 400,” Richards said. “Not too many teams in the history of cricket have chased over 400 but whatever we get from here on in will be difficult to get.”Stephen Mangongo, Zimbabwe’s interim coach, disagreed. “There is nothing to stop us batting one and a half days and chasing the target,” he said. The evidence of the last innings may contradict that statement. Zimbabwe batted 96 overs and their top-order lasted for fewer than 23 but Mangongo was confident they will rectify that in the second dig.”With have got faith in the top-order, that’s why they are in the team,” he said. “Some guys have been in the doldrums for some time and they are due for some runs. We are still in it big time.” Some guys like Vusi Sibanda and Hamilton Masakadza are who he might be referring to and they have only a few hours to come up with a plan to negate Robiul. It could mean that Zimbabwe will have to depend on the middle- and lower-order, as they have so far, but they will take heart from knowing another of that lot has returned to form. Elton Chigumbura recorded his highest Test score and changed the course of the Zimbabwe innings by scoring quicker than the rest, something Mangongo has urged him to keep doing.”Elton is a strokeplayer and we want to give him the role of the enforcer – to liberate him and allow him to play his natural game,” he said. “When he came in yesterday evening with 15 overs to go, playing his shots, orthodox cricket people would have said he was mad. He looks like a fool when it doesn’t pay off but he is an attacking player and we want him to play that way.”Another member of the squad who has been urged to do what feels most natural is Shingi Masakadza. He opened the bowling with success and with Keegan Meth unable to bowl so far, he will have to play a major part in ending Bangladesh’s innings early. “Shingi was always out-and-out away swing bowler and someone who hits the deck hard,” Mangongo said. “He has been trying to get the ball to come in so we’ve gone back to basics. We’ve told him to run in, hit the deck and get the ball to move away and it’s working.”Not everything about Zimbabwe cricket is doing the same. After dominating in the first Test, they are scrambling in this one and they already seem to have a ready-made excuse if things don’t go their way. “We are building. We don’t have a team at the moment,” Mangongo said. “There are a lot of hungry players out there and we will only know who the best are when the guys put their hands up consistently.”

Bresnan continues to press his case

Yorkshire made promising progress against Somerset on the third morning of their Division One match at Headingley before rain stopped play just before lunch.

Yorkshire made promising progress against Somerset on the third morning of their Division One match at Headingley before rain stopped play just before lunch.Tim Bresnan, who is pushing for a place in the England squad ahead of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s next week, claimed two early wickets and leg-spinner Adil Rashid captured two in two balls to reduce Somerset to 190 for 5 by the time the weather intervened. The visitors were left needing a further 226 to avoid the possibility of following on and their situation could have been much worse if Yorkshire had not also spilled two catches.England opener Nick Compton had grafted hard the previous evening for his 33 but when Somerset resumed on 92 for 1 he offered no stroke to the second ball of the day from Bresnan and was out lbw. Nightwatchman Jack Leach survived a confident shout for a catch behind the wicket off Jack Brooks but after edging Bresnan through the slips for four he had his off stump flattened by the same bowler.Bresnan’s double left Somerset on 123 for 3 but Alviro Peterson and James Hildreth stopped the slide with some confident shots, although the South Africa batsman would have gone for 24 if his edge off Steve Patterson had been held low down at second slip by Adam Lyth. There was more misfortune for Patterson when Peterson edged him through the vacant third slip. The gap was then plugged but the chance had gone. Bresnan was rested after his impressive seven over spell from the Football End had brought him two wickets for 25 runs.He was replaced by Richard Pyrah, who was hit to the midwicket boundary by Hildreth, but the batsman then had an escape as Joe Sayers fluffed a chance at third slip. Unperturbed, Hildreth stroked the next ball through the covers for four to take him to 10,000 runs in first class cricket.Rashid found himself unemployed until he was finally given a bowl at 169 for 3 in the 62nd over but Peterson went on to cut him for four to complete his half-century from 76 balls with seven boundaries and a similar shot crossed the rope later in the over. There was revenge for the leg-spinner in his next over when he beat Peterson through the air and he drove a catch to Patterson at mid-on. Arul Suppiah came to the crease and promptly left it, caught by Sayers at short leg off his first ball. Rashid had to wait until his following over to attempt the hat-trick but Jos Buttler survived and the rain came shortly afterwards.

Lancashire target immediate promotion

Lancashire will begin the Championship season looking to secure an immediate return to Division One, according to coach, Peter Moores

Paul Edwards02-Apr-2013

Lancashire’s young squad have had to put last year’s relegation behind them•Getty Images

Deep into last season the hoardings around Old Trafford’s many redevelopment projects sported advertisements aimed at recruiting new members for Lancashire. Their main feature was a cropped photograph from the previous year’s Championship triumph at Taunton. Sweaty, ecstatic faces beamed out at the Manchester public. “Let’s do it all over again!” bellowed the posters. By August they looked like a bit of a bad joke.Having won ten matches in 2011, Glen Chapple’s team registered just one success last summer and were relegated to Division Two with a meagre 106 points. A joke did the rounds in September that Lancashire had more seats in their new press box than points in the table. The dejection felt by the predominantly young Red Rose squad in the Lord’s dressing room after their fate had been confirmed was a new experience for most of them but it was also an unwelcome novelty for their coach Peter Moores, who had guided Sussex to the title in 2003 before masterminding Lancashire’s success two years ago. So the new season will offer interesting challenges – a favourite Moores noun – for a man who has never worked with a relegated side before. There is, however, no doubt as to what the biggest challenge will be. “Getting back into Division One is our number one goal,” Moores said.”It’s really important for us, closely followed by winning a one-day trophy. To achieve both of those things would be our perfect season. The economic impact of playing in the second division isn’t as great in cricket as it is some sports but Lancashire are a big club and we don’t just want to be in the first division, we want to be one of the top sides in that division.”You look around this ground and you say this is a first division club, but the fact is that it isn’t in the first division this year, so we just have to get stuck in and start winning games of cricket. Drawing isn’t good enough. The players have never been lacking in commitment, they realise the expectation of the club and they should take that as a positive.”What might also act as a spur to the Lancashire players is the recollection of their feelings when they were relegated last September. The fact that it had been on the cards for some weeks probably did nothing to soften its reality. Predictably, perhaps, Moores does not shy away from the memory. Instead, he seeks to incorporate it into his preparation.”We’ve experienced winning and losing in two seasons,” said Moores. “The losing is a bigger learner because it stays with you for longer, you can’t get away from it until you can put it right. We have to deal with Lord’s last summer and you do get to a point when you’re very keen to play some more cricket and get yourself back where you want to be.”There are always little things you might want to have done differently but we lost three of the first four games last season and in two of those we had opportunities to win which we didn’t take. After that, it wasn’t that we were getting beaten all the time, it was just that we weren’t getting any wins, largely because of the weather.”There is a fine line between winning and losing in the first division and unless you have a very good start you often find yourself in the middle of the table not knowing whether you’re pushing to win it or pushing to survive. You don’t fluke a Championship and if you add up the number of four-day wins we’ve had since Glen Chapple and I have been here you’d find us in the top two or three sides … Also, this group of players has had two semi-finals and three quarters in the one-dayers, so we have been competitive in all forms of the game for four years.”Perhaps the chief area in which Lancashire’s cricket lacked punching power in 2012 was the top-order batting, so the re-engagement of Ashwell Prince, the only player in the side to average above 30 in last season’s Championship, and the signing of Simon Katich will probably be seen as good news by Old Trafford loyalists. In the bowling department, Sajid Mahmood was released and Gary Keedy allowed to join Surrey, the latter move giving further opportunities to slow left-armer Stephen Parry and the highly rated rookie offspinner Arron Lilley. But perhaps the most interesting signing is that of the ex-Leicestershire allrounder Wayne White, a player who impressed Moores on the club’s pre-season tour to Dubai.”Wayne’s a rapidly emerging cricketer who has found himself a bit later than some,” said Moores. “He was leading wicket-taker for Leicestershire two years in a row but he bats, bowls and fields. He wants to move his game forward and we want to help him do that.”Elsewhere, we’ve made bold decisions by letting players go and that will create opportunities for others. But we’re going to need the experience of senior cricketers around, so Katich and Prince will help that. We want to develop our own players but if we see someone like Wayne who will add something to the side, we’ll be happy to go down that route. There is now terrific competition in the club and it’s maybe something we were missing last year. Each player has to know that there is somebody else snapping away at him, keeping him sharp.”It has been an eventful winter for Moores too. In the autumn he was appointed to the ECB’s Fellowship of Elite Coaches and in March he was one of only two coaches from non-Olympic sports accepted on to UK Sport’s Elite Programme, a recognition, some would say, of his coaching class. The ex-England coach was honoured by both appointments and admits that he has “strong ambitions” for his future career. For the moment, though, he is happy to be where he is.
