Canada take honours in Auty Cup double-header

Canada won both their matches in Sunday’s Auty Cup double-header against the United States of America

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jul-2013In the Sunday double-header, Canada prevailed on both occasions, with a disciplined bowling effort from Canada’s bowlers helping them to a five-wicket win over United States of America in the first T20 match in King City. USA chose to bat, but lost regular wickets through the course of their innings. Only four batsmen were able to get into double digits as all of Canada’s bowlers struck at least once. Henry Osinde picked up figures of 2 for 23, as USA reached 106 for 9 in their 20 overs.Canada’s innings started in a similar fashion, with Rizwan Cheema out for 9 with the score on 18. However, Ruvindu Gunasekera and Usman Limbada put together a 41-run partnership to steady the innings. Gunasekera, who has been in prolific form, top-scored for Canada once again with 58 off 50 balls, as Canada reached their target inside of 17 overs. In their second match, Canada once again had the better of USA with a 78-run victory. Canada batted first, with openers Gunasekera and Cheema putting on 63 in just over five overs. Once Cheema fell, Nitish Kumar and Gunasekera put on a further 56 runs to put Canada in the ascendancy. Each of Canada’s batsmen got into double digits as they posted 189 for 5. Timil Patel had best figures of 3 for 40.Facing a steep target, USA’s chase came undone in the first couple of overs itself as they struggled to maintain the required rate while safeguarding their wickets. Only wicketkeeper Akeem Dodson played an innings of note, with his 44 off 36 balls. Salman Nazar’s 3 for 27, Harvir Baidwan’s 2 for 25 and Junaid Siddiqui’s 2 for 32 ensured USA were unable to make a decent fist of the chase.

West Brom fans are split about links with Lee Peltier

Joseph Masi, of The Express & Star, has reported that West Bromwich Albion are looking to sign Cardiff City defender Lee Peltier.

The Baggies haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 10 league games, so the 33-year-old someone who could help solve that issue.

However, the club’s fanbase are split on whether signing the right-back would actually be a positive move or not.

Masi referred to the club wanting a “battle-hardened and experienced” player to come in and help solidify the defence, which Peltier certainly is.

Throughout his career, the veteran has played a total of 270 Championship matches for teams including Leeds United and Leicester City.

He hasn’t fallen away this season either, as he has made 24 league starts for Cardiff, averaging 1.4 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 3.1 clearances and 0.6 blocks per game.

However, not everybody is happy about the prospect of Peltier making the move from Cardiff to the Hawthorns.

One fan has picked up on the fact that in all those Championship games this season he hasn’t recorded any goals or assists, while another suggests the club should send scouts to spot some talent at the “walking football centre” if they want experienced defenders.

It seems as though some of the supporters were looking for more of a big and exciting name, rather than someone who can provide another functional option at the back.

Haddin back in ODI side, Wade axed

Matthew Wade has been axed as Australia’s one-day wicketkeeper in favour of Brad Haddin and Fawad Ahmed has also been dropped for Xavier Doherty for the upcoming tour of India

Matthew Wade has been axed as Australia’s one-day wicketkeeper in favour of Brad Haddin and Fawad Ahmed has also been dropped for Xavier Doherty for the upcoming tour of India. The 14-man squad will be led by Michael Clarke, if his back injury allows him to, and he will be one of three certainties for the first Test at the Gabba – along with Haddin and Shane Watson – on the near month-long trip in the lead-up to the Ashes. The selection of Clarke, Watson and Haddin means they will all miss the first round of Sheffield Shield matches, leaving them only two matches each to readjust to the longer format and the Australian conditions before the Brisbane Test. England’s cricketers, by comparison, will have three games to acclimatise and it is not a dissimilar scenario to the disastrous 2010-11 Ashes, when England’s players were better prepared than the Australians. However, it is still possible that Clarke will not take part in the Indian trip after he suffered a recurrence of his ongoing back problem at the end of the limited-overs series in England. In India in March, Clarke missed a Test due to his back injury for the first time in his career, and he was also troubled by his back in the lead-up to the Ashes in England.”After a long tour Michael Clarke’s back condition has flared up again and he has been selected subject to fitness,” John Inverarity, the national selector, said. “He has returned to Australia for further assessment and the national selection panel hopes that it will improve in time for the Indian tour.”The dumping of Wade caps off a difficult few months for him after Haddin reclaimed the Test wicketkeeping position for the Ashes in England. In the one-day series that followed, Wade made 0, 36 and 0 and collected three dismissals, and Haddin’s return could be a long-term option for the selectors after Haddin expressed his desire last month to play on in international cricket until the end of the 2015 World Cup.”Matthew Wade has been omitted due to lack of form and has been replaced by Brad Haddin, who captured an Ashes series record of dismissals in July and August,” Inverarity said. “Matthew is 25 years of age and has a great deal of natural ability both as a batsman and as a keeper. The NSP is confident that Matthew will regain form and press hard for selection in the not too distant future.”That Wade is no longer the incumbent in any format due to poor form – there is a T20 international in Rajkot before the seven-match ODI series – raises the question of whether he would remain next in line behind Haddin over the Australian summer. The Tasmania wicketkeeper Tim Paine could force himself ahead in the queue with a strong start to the domestic season, while Queensland’s Chris Hartley could also find himself in contention if a Test replacement is needed. The return of Doherty for the Indian trip was not unexpected but the omission of Ahmed was perhaps surprising, given he had been blooded on the England tour. Instead, he will have the chance to press for Ashes consideration in three Sheffield Shield outings, although Nathan Lyon is likely to remain the first-choice spinner for at least the beginning of the Ashes.”Fawad bowled well with his limited opportunities in the rain-affected series and better than his figures would suggest,” Inverarity said. “The NSP looks forward to Fawad getting plenty of bowling in the busy domestic schedule that begins at the end of this month.”Also gone from the ODI squad that toured England are Josh Hazlewood and the injured Shaun Marsh, while the allrounder Moises Henriques has been recalled. There will also be a significant change in the off-field staff for the Australians, with the fielding mentor Steve Rixon to lead the tour as head coach while Darren Lehmann spends time at home.”As with the successful tour of the UAE last year we will have Steve Rixon acting as head coach in India,” Pat Howard, Cricket Australia’s general manager of team performance, said. “Darren has been on the road and away from home for a considerable amount of time. This is a great opportunity for Darren to refresh, work with the states and provide others with opportunities.”Australia squad Shane Watson, Aaron Finch, Phillip Hughes, Michael Clarke (capt), George Bailey (vice-capt), Adam Voges, Brad Haddin (wk), Moises Henriques, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Johnson, James Faulkner, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Clint McKay, Xavier Doherty.

Tight bowling by spinners Simon Kerrigan and Arron Lilley aided by someathletic fielding helped Lancashire to defeat Derbyshire by 12 runs at Old Trafford. The young pair returned identical figures of 1 for 25 from their four oversas Steven Croft’s side restricted the visitors to 153 for 6 in reply toLightning’s 165 for nine. The win was Lancashire’s third in six games and it boosts their hopes ofqualifying the quarter-finals from the North Group. The home side’s innings was dominated by a knock of 74 by opener Stephen Moorewhose 42-ball innings included five sixes and five fours. Moore was particularly hard on David Wainwright, taking 23 runsoff the slow left-armer’s third over. But that acceleration was desperatelyneeded by a Lancashire side who had initially struggled to dominate.A modest 38 runs had been scored off the first six overs for the loss of TomSmith, Karl Brown and Simon Katich, two of the wickets falling to Tim Groenewaldwho eventually finished with 3 for 32.Moore was joined by skipper Croft and the pair added 76 runs for the fourthwicket in only 8.2 overs before offspinner Dan Redfern dismissed both batsmenin quick succession.Brief injections of acceleration were supplied by Ashwell Prince and GarethCross but Lancashire’s final total of 165 was probably little more than par on agood pitch.Derbyshire seamer Mark Turner profited from a late dash for runs andended the innings with 4 for 35 while Redfern collected 2 for 17 andoutfielder Chesney Hughes pouched three fine catches. In contrast to Lancashire’s innings, the Derbyshire reply got off to a finestart with Wes Durston hitting sixes off both Tom Smith and Kabir Ali as 54 runswere plundered off the first six overs. But the run rate slowed once Durston hadbeen trapped lbw by Kerrigan for a 29-ball 48 and the innings never quiteregained the required momentum.Shivnarine Chanderpaul made an inventive 39 off 31 balls before being run outby a direct hit from mid-on by Mitchell McClenaghan, although by then ahamstring injury had forced Chanderpaul to use a runner.Derbyshire needed 46 runs off the final four overs and skipper Wayne Madsenmade 36 in a vain effort to keep up with the asking rate as Kabir Ali andMcClenaghan applied the pressure. The New Zealand bowler finished with 2 for26 and reinforced his reputation as a very skilful seamer in short-formcricket.

Can West Indies' matchwinners fire as a unit?

West Indies enter this tournament with good memories from previous competitions. Their journey will be determined by the effectiveness of their matchwinners

The Preview by Nagraj Gollapudi05-Jun-2013

How Sunil Narine fares on English wickets will be telling in how far West Indies progresses•Getty Images

OverviewThere are many reasons why West Indies could be the most dangerous team in the tournament. Their strongest attribute is that they possess more than one matchwinner: Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Kieron Pollard and Kemar Roach have the capability to overpower opposition. Sunil Narine plays a decisive role, especially during the final fifteen overs, including the batting Powerplay, when batsmen step on the accelerator.Their determination to hang in there to win the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka last year, where they lived on the edge on a few occasions, would have given them the self belief needed in big tournaments. However the challenge now is whether they can repeat that in England. They could certainly take solace in The Oval Miracle, where they fought back from 147 for 8, chasing England’s 218, and ended up winning by two wickets in near twilight. That event was hosted in England as well, so West Indies can draw upon that memory for inspiration. For them to win, the Big Five will have to stand up and lead. Gayle has said he wants to play deep into the innings. Samuels, one of Wisden’s top five cricketers of 2013, will be the pivot between the top and lower order, and can also squeeze in a few overs as a spinner. Pollard needs to bring his world-class finishing skills, so effective in Twenty20 cricket, and perform on a consistent basis. But the two people who can influence the team’s belief will be the former and current captains: Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy. Bravo took over the ODI leadership from Sammy prior to this tournament, and has the respect of his players being the fourth senior-most member behind Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Samuels. More than his allround skills, it would be his leadership style that would determine the Windies approach. But unlike Sammy’s animated approach, Bravo can be isolated at times. He needs to confide in Sammy when in a tight corner, and be flexible in changing plans whenever the going gets tough.Key playerDespite his success in the Twenty20 format, Kieron Pollard has never managed to bring the matchwinner status he has established in tournaments like the IPL. However, his potential cannot be questioned. He has been West Indies’ best ODI batsman since the 2011-12 season where he has scored 926 runs from 30 innings with three centuries (most by a West Indies batsman during this period). Pollard has the firepower to demolish the best bowling attack during the death overs and it will be in the role of finisher where he can help swing West Indies’ fortunes. Pollard performed that role to perfection in Mumbai Indians winning their maiden IPL title last month. Pollard scored 250 runs in the last five overs, second only to MS Dhoni (286). Pollard’s strike-rate was 10.06 runs an over in these overs, as he finished as the second best finisher in terms of runs. He hit 20 sixes in the last five overs of this IPL, most by any batsman, along with Rohit Sharma.Surprise packageAt 6’8″ tall, Jason Holder is the youngest in the Windies squad. But he resembles the famous breed of fast bowlers from the glory days of Caribbean cricket, when tall and gangly men could hit that unplayable length effortlessly, playing truant with the best batsmen. Holder’s List A record is impressive with 29 wickets in 16 innings at an average of 20.24 and an economy-rate of 4.47. With his medium pace, and the bounce he can generate because of his stature, Holder could be a handy option, especially in the middle overs, a vital segment in ODIs where good batting teams gain the initiative.WeaknessDiscipline and playing as a group. As they showed in their first warm-up match against Australia, the players can easily forget their plans. Initially Johnson Charles started aggressively, but failed to switch gears as the Australian bowlers found a rhythm. Luckily Darren Bravo played a mature innings to raise a platform for a 300-plus target, but the Windies batsmen panicked in their attempt to accelerate during the batting Powerplay, thereby finishing easily 30 runs short. Later, after Roach had put the Australians on the backfoot with an aggressive first spell, the rest of the bowlers, especially their captain Dwayne Bravo, failed to maintain the right lengths and lines for a sustained period, thereby allowing Shane Watson to dominate. Such dips in concentration can only negate all the hard work, so West Indies have no choice but to be more ruthless.Champions Trophy historyTheir escape to victory at The Oval, on a dark Saturday evening late September in 2004 in the final against England was the highest point West Indies reached in their Champions Trophy journey. That triumph had come 25 years after Clive Lloyd had lifted the World Cup in 1979. Despite their decline in the longer format, West Indies have remained a surprising force to reckon with in the Champions Trophy, having made the finals thrice in the six editions. They reached the final in the inaugural Wills Trophy in Bangladesh in 1998, and made consecutive finals in 2004 and in 2006. In the 2009 edition in South Africa, they lost all three of their group matches.Recent formSince the last Champions Trophy in October 2009, West Indies have only beaten one high-ranking country, New Zealand, which they won 4-1 last July. During the period they played 70 ODIs, winning just 27 while losing 40 including the quarter-final exit during the 2011 World Cup. Although they secured a 3-0 whitewash at home against Zimbabwe in their last ODI series, they would still remember the 5-0 humiliation in Australia at the beginning of 2013.

Carli sofre entorse no joelho e deve desfalcar o Botafogo contra Defensa
