Spurs could secure Mourinho’s next Diego Costa with Bas Dost swoop

Tottenham Hotspur are in the mood to do business this summer transfer window and next on the list of priorities is surely a striker, of which one target makes a ton of sense…

What’s the word?

According to the Guardian, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is keen to bring Frankfurt attacker Bas Dost to the Premier League before next month’s deadline.

They claim that the Bundesliga outfit value the 31-year-old veteran at just €5.5m (£5m), though the north Londoners would prefer a temporary loan agreement instead.

Mourinho views Dost as the perfect alternative to Harry Kane due to his imposing physical stature. Having failed to sign a back-up option in January, Daniel Levy must deliver this window.

Jose’s new Costa?

If Spurs wanted to find a carbon-copy of Fernando Llorente, then they’re staring right at him in Dost. The former Netherlands international stands 6 foot 5 inches tall and is an absolute powerhouse.

In the Bundesliga last season, the colossus won a career-high 5.4 aerials duels per game on average, via WhoScored. His aggression and strength also makes him hard to beat having only been dispossessed four times in 24 appearances.

He’s been likened to Edin Dzeko in the past but perhaps a better comparison could be Diego Costa, who Mourinho managed to a Premier League and League Cup double in 2015.

It is evident that this is the sort of striker profile he’s after – a mean brute who can bully teams into submission and that’s what Dost would bring say over someone like Joshua King or Villa’s new signing Ollie Watkins.

The Dutch forward has been described as a “top-level” talent who’d have no trouble adapting to the demands of an elite division whilst another one of Mourinho’s former players, the now-retired Andre Schurrle, believes Dost is “phenomenal” and “unbelievable”.

For just £5.5m, Levy should be all over this move.

AND in other news, Spurs could deliver upgrade on a Mourinho favourite with £45m swoop…

Tottenham Hotspur: Predicted XI to face Leicester City in pivotal Premier League clash

Tottenham welcome Leicester City to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this afternoon in a pivotal Premier League clash in the race for European qualification.

After beating Arsenal in the North London derby last week, Spurs have started to gain some momentum, as they then defeated Newcastle United 3-1 to mark Jose Mourinho’s first league win at St James’ Park.

Dele Alli remains absent for the game with Leicester, as he has missed the last four matches with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, Tanguy Ndombele has been ruled out for the rest of the season, while Eric Dier serves the final match of his suspension.

The Foxes travel to Tottenham in fourth place, just ahead of Manchester United on goal difference alone, knowing that a slip-up in north London could give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side the impetus they need to usurp them for the final Champions League berth.

Transfer Tavern have put together a predicted starting lineup for Spurs, which sees Mourinho make adjustments to the side that travelled to Newcastle, as Moussa Sissoko drops to the defence while Steven Bergwijn makes his return.

Mourinho has admitted that he is unsure if Serge Aurier will be available for selection on Sunday, as he is back in France to mourn the death of his younger brother with his family.

The Ivorian is the club’s only specialist right-back, as Kyle Walker-Peters is currently on loan at Southampton, and the Spurs boss has been considering Gedson Fernandes, Oliver Skipp and Sissoko as possible alternatives instead.

Sissoko is the most experienced out of those players and he will likely slot into place alongside Davinson Sanchez on the right-hand side of defence.

Although Mourinho started the match against the Magpies with a 4-2-3-1 formation, it makes sense for him to revert back to a 4-4-1-1 system to compensate for the combined loss of Aurier and Alli.

Bergwijn replaced Lucas Moura in the second half at St James’ Park after his teammate picked up a knock. However, it seems as though Moura has made a full recovery, as he wasn’t mentioned in the club’s official team news ahead of the game.

The 22-year-old’s extra pace could punish Leicester, who have been hit by multiple injuries to several key players including James Maddison, Ben Chilwell, Christian Fuchs, while Caglar Soyuncu has also been suspended.

As Bergwijn hasn’t started since the 0-0 draw with Bournemouth, he should be fit and raring to go, and Spurs fans will be hoping he can make another major contribution if he starts, as he has scored in several big games so far. The Dutchman famously scored in front of the home crowd on his debut against Manchester City and also opening the scoring during the 1-1 draw with Manchester United last month.

In theory, Bergwijn could line up next to Harry Winks, which will allow Giovani Lo Celso to push further afield.

Make no mistake, this is a must-win game for Spurs if they want to stay in the mix with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sheffield United in the race for a place in the Europa League.

Phil Hay claims Man City starlet could be Leeds’ Ben White alternative

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has suggested Manchester City starlet Taylor-Harwood Bellis could be a potential transfer target for Leeds United.

What did he say?

After enjoying an outstanding campaign on loan at Elland Road, all eyes will be on whether the Whites can sign Brighton defender Ben White on a permanent basis this summer.

However, with reports in recent weeks claiming that the likes of Premier League champions Liverpool being interested in the Englishman, Marcelo Bielsa’s side may need to have a back-up option up their sleeve – something Hay talked about for The Athletic.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He said: “One player who was mentioned to me this week was 18-year-old Taylor Harwood-Bellis at Manchester City, although I can’t say if Leeds would actually go for him. In our sensible transfers piece, we picked out two defenders at Swansea this season — Ben Wilmot and Ben Cabagno — as options whose attributes on paper draw reasonable comparisons to White’s. But when you speak to Leeds, they’re only talking about White. They’re going to try to make that happen.”

All in for Ben White

It’s no surprise that Leeds are trying to sign White on a permanent deal.

After all, he was a mainstay of a defence that looked superb all season – in fact, their 35 goals conceded was the best record of any side in the Championship.

As per Whoscored, only Luke Ayling averaged more tackles per game than him as a defender for Leeds (1.6), whilst absolutely nobody bettered his exceptional average of 2.5 interceptions per match.

Make no mistake about it, White was an absolute colossus for the Whites, and Bielsa for sure will be letting Victor Orta and co know just how important he was to the team last season in a bid to get his long-term future secured.

Glasgow Rangers: Fans desperate to sign Andreas Skov Olsen

Glasgow Rangers are said to be interested in Andreas Skov Olsen, according to a report from Italy (via Rincon Escoces).

Denmark under-21 international Olsen currently plays for Bologna in Serie A after making the switch from Nordsjaelland last summer. Whilst he may have only been playing in the Danish top flight previously, he was in absolutely stunning form, scoring 26 goals in 46 matches whilst also providing six assists in 2018/19.

That convinced the Italian side to part with £5.4m to sign him, although things have not quite gone to plan with his current employers – he has managed just one goal in 19 matches to date. That could see him leave the club and the ‘Gers have been mentioned as a potential destination.

The news has reached the ‘Gers fans, and it is fair to say that many are absolutely delighted to hear that they could be in with a chance of signing the 20-year-old, with one fan hailing him as “the next Brian Laudrup” in reference to the Danish legend who graced Ibrox in the 1990s.

They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below:

Morgan explains why he snubbed Championship interest

[ad_pod ]

Lewis Morgan has revealed that he turned down offers to play in the English Championship to be reunited with former manager Jack Ross.

The on-loan winger made his debut for Sunderland in the weekend win over Wimbledon and made a favourable impression on the Stadium of Light faithful.

That victory ended a run of three consecutive draws that had frustrated Sunderland’s promotion hopes but after the weekend’s results they are only three points behind second-placed Barnsley with two games in hand on them.

Morgan was expected to start the match on the bench but ended up being called into the starting XI.

And the former Celtic youngster has since revealed he jumped at the chance to join the League One side, snubbing interest from clubs from the division above in the process.

“As soon as the chance came up to come here my mind was made up,” he said, as quoted by The Chronicle.

“I’m working with a coaching staff I’ve got massive respect for, a massive club, it’s something I’m excited about. I never thought about it in terms of the league I’m coming to. It was about the club – great facilities, massive club, that would interest everyone.

“I think it’s well documented that there was interest from the Championship down here and the Premiership up north, but it’s a massive club with great people. I’m very happy to be part of it. It’s an exciting time for the club, challenging at the top end of the table. I’m here to help us push up the table.”

Speaking about being reunited with his old St Mirren boss he added: “Jack and his staff improve every player. The training sessions are great and they give you that licence to express yourself in the final third. As an attacking player that’s what you want.

“Aiden [McGeady] and I are both very direct, we like to take our man on. Hopefully we can both dovetail and keep building on that performance on Saturday.”

On Saturday, Sunderland travel to face relegation threatened Oxford United, before hosting Blackpool in midweek, as they continue their quest to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Give Casemiro more support, let Mason Mount replace Antony and don't give up on Erik ten Hag: Six things Man Utd must do to turn their miserable season around

The Red Devils have had a nightmare start to the season on almost every front but a few tweaks could see them quickly turn their fortunes around

Manchester United just cannot catch a break. Every match this season has been a tale of its own misery – even the ones they have ended up winning. After a run of three consecutive defeats Erik ten Hag is at the lowest point of his spell in charge and the goodwill shown towards the manager from the previous campaign is fast running out.

The manager has been beset by off-field problems including a spate of injuries, serious accusations against Antony and a feud with Jadon Sancho. And now more cracks are beginning to appear in the form of leaked reports of unrest among the squad.

However, it is far from the only time United have made a miserable start to a campaign and they have turned things around in the past. And despite the early doom and gloom, United can still turn this difficult season into one to remember.

GOAL outlines six ways United can stop the rot and get their chaotic season back on track…

Getty ImagesMake promising starts count

It sounds very simple but the easiest way for United to ease their troubles is to start finishing off the early chances they have been creating in matches and take the lead in rather than being forced to chase it. Although the results do not suggest it, United have actually started well in most of their games this season, particularly the ones they have ended up losing.

They had a dominant first half against Tottenham, with Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes each missing glaring chances at 0-0 and Antony hammering the woodwork just after Spurs had taken the lead after the break. It was a similar story against Brighton and Bayern Munich, with Rashford spurning early opportunities against the Seagulls and Christian Eriksen passing up a glorious opening at the Allianz Arena.

There are parallels with United's form towards the end of last season, when they failed to take advantage of strong starts at West Ham and at Brighton, and even in the 7-0 drubbing at Liverpool.

Then they lacked firepower up front due to Wout Weghorst's lack of quality and Anthony Martial's lack of fitness but their frontline is slowly coming together now that Rasmus Hojlund has recovered from injury and has put the ball in the net in his last two appearances, getting off the mark in Munich after his strike against Brighton was disallowed.

United have a habit of crumbling in matches once they face their first setback but if they can score the first goal their luck could well start turning.

AdvertisementGettyGet better in possession

Ten Hag's Ajax side loved to have the ball but the Dutchman has so far struggled to make United a team that are truly comfortable in possession and happy to retain it for long periods. His three predecessors – Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick – favoured reactive to proactive football and that was what Ten Hag ended up reverting to after last season's nightmare opening results against Brighton and Brentford.

But the coach needs to enact the vision he first had for the team and oversee the transition from counter-attacking to playing on the front foot, an idea he has talked about enthusiastically before. He also has the players to do it, especially after signing Andre Onana, arguably the best passing goalkeeper in the world and having two fine ball-playing centre-backs in Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane (when he is fit).

There is another reason for United to get better with the ball. The defeats to Brighton and Bayern, in which they had 44 per cent and 40 per cent possession respectively, showed how the likes of Eriksen and Casemiro no longer have the legs or breath to chase the ball for long periods.

In the absence of many energetic midfielders, United have little choice but to get better with the ball.

GettyPlay Mount on the right

Mason Mount was the first player United signed this summer but he has been largely unable to contribute after getting injured in only his second match of the season. The midfielder did not have memorable performances against Wolves or Tottenham before hurting his hamstring but he is now back in training and could return against Burnley.

And he has the chance to take advantage of Antony and Sancho's problems and claim the vacant position on the right of United's attack. After all, Mount had the best individual season of his career while playing on the right of Chelsea's attack in the 2021-22 season, scoring 13 times and contributing 16 assists.

Ten Hag was attracted to Mount due to his versatility but he needs to play in the same position regularly if he wants to be consistent and he could be the best candidate on the right of the attack, with more experience than Facundo Pellistri and more discipline than Alejandro Garnacho.

Getty ImagesGive Casemiro more support

The Brazilian was one of United's most influential players last season and his drop in form has been a real concern. He is now starting to look exactly like a player who is 31 and has spent the last decade fiercely competing at the highest level.

Casemiro still has plenty to give and his two goals against Bayern showed his quality as well as his determination. But he needs to be managed better. For starters, he should be given more opportunities to rest so he remains in peak condition.

He should also be given more support on the pitch and he needs a more energetic runner than Christian Eriksen, also 31, by his side. Sofyan Amrabat should play a key role once he starts playing and if the Moroccan is integrated well then he should be able to ease the burden on Casemiro. Prolonging the Brazilian's powers, rather than exhausting them, should be an absolute priority for Ten Hag.

‘Least cool thing ever!’ – How Wrexham star embarrassed himself in first meeting with Ryan Reynolds by turning into a fanboy

Former Wrexham striker Jake Hyde admits to having embarrassed himself during a first meeting with club co-owner Ryan Reynolds.

The 33-year-old joined the Dragons in 2021 – shortly before Paul Mullin's arrival – and was thrust straight under the spotlight at a club that sees their every move documented in the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ television series.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Hyde has no problem with being in front of the camera, but concedes that he lost his cool when crossing paths with Reynolds for the first time. He quickly became comfortable around the Deadpool actor and his fellow co-chairman Rob McElhenney, but did start out in fanboy mode.

WHAT THEY SAID

Hyde has told the of the famous owners in North Wales: “It was so mad. I knew loads about Ryan, I’ve watched loads of his films. Stupidly, and probably the least cool thing I’ve ever done in my life, I told him straight away that one of my favourite comedies was The Change Up. That’s straight off the bat, I didn’t even introduce myself, just ‘hi, I really like Change Up’ – it was terrible! The person he is, I can’t speak highly enough of him – just as a general man, as a polite bloke. Across the whole of my career – I’ve played for 10 different clubs – never had a chairman text you on your birthday. He’s just, as a bloke, unbelievable. The fact that he is so well known, how well he has done and all the success, for him to still be that man and character is says bundles about him. He’s a really, really top bloke.

“And I would say the same about Rob. Rob I spoke to a little less, I didn’t see him quite as much but again, as a bloke, when he was there he was finding out about us, asking about us, how’s the family etc. He knew so much about us. One thing I remember thinking about Rob is – because I think when they first took over they were still learning on the job, how a football club is run, even how football is run, just how football is – he knew so much. Rob was hooked from the start. I’m sure Ryan was as well, but Rob would surprise me with the things he knew. He would tell me something that happened to me a year ago and I was like ‘how does he even…’ So it was obvious that he was super invested and had done all his research for ages. People always say don’t meet your heroes because you’ll be disappointed, but those two exceeded my expectations 10 fold. You expect someone that well known and high calibre of a person to get a bit fed up and be like ‘I’ve had enough of that and want to be on my own’, but they weren’t. They were so excited to be around us, to talk to us and they always made such an effort. That went a long way with the boys.”

USMNT's 'Pirate of the Caribbean' Jesus Ferreira deserves a European transfer after Gold Cup heroics

The young striker is lighting up CONCACAF and, despite his critics, seems poised for a move across the Atlantic in the near future.

Say what you want about the levels of crazy in American soccer, but you have to acknowledge that United States men's national team fans have a sense of humor. Their most recent moment of hysteria centers around Jesus Ferreira, the young USMNT striker that has been blessed with a tongue-in-cheek nickname that has social media in hysterics.

'The Pirate of the Caribbean' is a nickname born as a response to Ferreira's goalscoring record. He has been scoring for fun with the USMNT, especially at the ongoing Gold Cup, but not everyone is impressed.

Ferreira's goals, by and large, have come against CONCACAF's smaller teams, hence the nickname. When given the chance to face some of the weaker teams in the region, Ferreira has always made sure to pour it on, having now scored 14 goals in just 21 USMNT appearances. That puts him just three goals away from cracking the USMNT's top 10 goalscorers, and he's only 22.

That accomplishment, though, is viewed through two lenses. The pessimist points to the fact that those goals are coming against overmatched opponents in largely one-sided games. The optimist, meanwhile, sees goals, regardless of where they're coming from or who against, and, for a USMNT program that lacked goals for so long, how could that be a bad thing?

As the summer goes on, though, several opinions will begin to show themselves, and they're the most important ones. No, we're not talking about USMNT's rabid Twitter fanbase; we're talking about those in charge at European clubs, many of whom will be taking a close look at Ferreira after this summer's goal explosion.

Some already have been looking and, at some point, Ferreira will almost certainly make his big move. He's certainly earned the chance to go from pillaging the North American region to one of Europe's top leagues.

Getty ImagesFerreira's career so far

The 22-year-old USMNT star's road to the No.9 race is an interesting one, mostly because he wasn't always a No.9. Originally an attacking midfielder for FC Dallas, Ferreira transitioned to the position after Ricardo Pepi's big move to Europe following his MLS breakout. Pepi is, of course, now one of the players Ferreira is competing with for a spot in the USMNT striker pool.

After scoring 18 goals across his first 81 appearances, Ferreira's transition to playing as FC Dallas' No.9 was seamless, as he scored 18 goals in 2022 alone. He has followed that up with 10 more in his first 18 games of the 2023 MLS season.

Internationally, Ferreira became a regular for the U.S. in 2022, earning a spot at the World Cup. He started just once in Qatar, a disappointing runout against the Netherlands, but looks set to have a say as the 2026 cycle gets underway.

AdvertisementGettyA Pirate's Life

Through just 21 appearances, Ferreira has 14 goals, an impressive total. There are some caveats, though, when it comes to the competition those goals have been scored against.

Of those 14, five have come against Trinidad & Tobago, four came against Grenada, while three came against Saint Kitts and Nevis. One, meanwhile, was scored in a World Cup qualifier against Panama while another was scored in a friendly draw against Mexico. It's not an impressive list, for sure.

Meanwhile, just that one goal against Mexico has come in a game that wasn't a total blowout. Every other match that Ferreira has scored in has ended in at least a four-goal USMNT win. That record, of course, has led to the new nickname, which pokes fun at Ferreira's tendency to crush CONCACAF's minnows. Ferreira, though, isn't worried about those criticizing his goal record.

"For me, as a forward, it's always my job to score goals, to come in and try to score goals against whoever's in front of us," he said before putting three past Trinidad & Tobago in the USMNT's Gold Cup group stage finale. "Yeah, I've scored a lot of goals against Caribbean teams, but, like I said, my job is to score goals and I'm gonna do that no matter who's in front of us."

His interim coach, B.J. Callaghan, has also been impressed, as the former No.10 has done a little of everything for a USMNT side that is among the favorites to win the trophy this summer.

“All forwards are going to be judged by the goals that they score, first and foremost. When I see his movement and his confidence in the penalty box, you can tell that the game has slowed down for him,” Callaghan said. “All of the work that he’s doing, leading our line defensively, dropping back, helping build-up play, for me he’s having a really complete tournament.”

Getty ImagesMaking history

Just 21 games into his USMNT career, Ferreira is already making history. With his hat-trick against St. Kitts & Nevis, he became the fastest player to hit double-digit goals in a USMNT shirt. With his treble against Trinidad & Tobago, he became the first American to score three goals in back-to-back games, while equalling Landon Donovan for most USMNT hat-tricks, with three.

Say what you want about caveats or levels of opposition, but those numbers do mean something. Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, Christian Pulisic… all have played against similar teams, but it's Ferreira that, at the moment, is lighting them up.

And it's not just the finishes themselves, but also the quality. Look at Ferreira's first goal against T&T as an example. It was a fantastic striker's finish, as Ferreira took one touch, set himself up and fired into the back of the net. It was quality, no matter who it came against.

Still, perspective and nuance is difficult in this day and age, and Ferreira is perhaps the best example of that fact.

Getty ImagesA bit of perspective

Alexi Lalas isn't always known for giving the most measured takes, but his analysis of Ferreira's play is spot on. "You can look at Jesus Ferreira with perspective and recognize that he's doing this against inferior opposition," Lalas said on his podcast. "You can also look at it as an incredible moment in this player's life where everything he's touching is turning to gold, or goal as this case may be. An American is scoring goals for America at a historical pace, and that is fun, it is worth praise, and is worth celebrating.

"Does it mean he's going to become Messi or the U.S. is going to win the World Cup? No! But at this time, at this moment with this group at this Gold Cup, this is fun to see and if you crap on it, then you have bigger problems."

Two things can be true at once. Ferreira can be playing fantastic soccer, showing why there are plenty of reasons to be excited about his development. He could also be doing so against teams he should be lighting up on a regular basis.

Ferreira, though, finds himself in an impossible situation. If he fails to score, it's because he isn't good enough. If he scores too many, it's because the opponent isn't good enough. There's no winning. For many, the narrative around him has been written, largely based on one game at the World Cup. He didn't score against Virgil van Dijk in his first World Cup game, and that'll be enough for some to move on.

Ferreira, too, has moved on by scoring goal after goal for club and country ever since. And that is good news, no matter which way you look at it.

Brazil winners, losers and ratings as Neymar & team-mates stand defiant in the face of racism & laser pointers

That was a mess of a friendly match, but the Selecao handled it as well as possible.

Brazil encountered a racist fan incident, laser pointers from the stands and rash defensive challenges from Tunisia in a 5-1 victory on Tuesday at the Parc des Princes.

Fred kicked a banana hurled from the crowd off the pitch, barely acknowledging the vile act, and players continued to celebrate Richarlison's first-half goal as more objects rained down. What was meant to intimidate Brazil in another act of bigotry towards Tite's team did no such thing.

They put on another beautiful football show, danced as usual and didn't give racist spectators the satisfaction of a response.

Brazil have now won seven matches in a row, with six of those games finishing with a score margin of at least three goals. They will enter the World Cup as one of the favourites, and it appears the hate they've faced in recent weeks has only brought them closer together.

Raphinha (twice), Richarlison, Neymar and Pedro were all on the scoresheet in the victory over Tunisia, which also included a red-card challenge from Dylan Bronn on Neymar.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Raphinha:

If Raphinha has been somewhat erratic for Barcelona early in the 2022-23 season, he has been filled with confidence when he wears the Brazil shirt. The right winger opened the scoring against Tunisia, demonstrating skill and great sense of placement with his header after an exquisite pass by Casemiro. Also in the first half, he turned the victory into a rout by scoring Brazil's fourth goal.

Richarlison:

In Brazil's recent 3-0 win against Ghana, Richarlison took a big step to place himself as the holder of the No. 9 role. Now, he has practically confirmed this status. He only played the first half, but he stole the show with a goal and assist. During the cycle of Tite's selection for the 2022 World Cup, Richarlison has scored a total of 17 goals, only behind Neymar. He's unmatched when penalties are excluded.

Neymar:

The No. 10 once again demonstrated his skill. He suffered from the challenges of the Tunisians and his reaction was what it should be: pressure on the referee. He stood up to opponents and continued doing what he knows best – playing football. Scorer of the third Brazilian goal in the friendly, when converting a penalty won by Casemiro, Neymar seems to be better than ever.

Pedro:

Despite the limited minutes on the field, Pedro showed his eye for goal by scoring Brazil's fifth. If he is on the field, he will take advantage of it. It's like that with Flamengo, it was like that against Tunisia.

Casemiro:

It's normal that in a rout the highlights go mostly to the forwards, but Casemiro was another great performer. The pass that turned into an assist for the first goal was like Gerson in the 1970 World Cup (with the difference that the Manchester United player usually uses his right foot, of course). The experienced midfielder also drew the penalty that resulted in Neymar's goal.

Fred:

First of all, it is important to point out: a 5-1 victory, with a good performance by the team as a unit, is a triumph for all involved. But if we need to list some who were not as prominent as their companions, it is possible to mention Fred. The midfielder filled in the spaces well, but wasted some passes and shanked a shot that could have gone closer.

Roberto Firmino:

Firmino was called up despite his wobbly form at Liverpool, but did not leave the bench. From there, he saw other attackers demonstrate to Tite that they could be better options than him for the World Cup.

Matheus Cunha:

Currently in the reserves of Atletico Madrid, the striker has not scored in the last two friendlies of the Brazilian team. And this time, he didn't even come off the bench.

Getty ImagesBrazil Ratings: Defence

Alisson (5/10):

Not much demanded, as was the case against Ghana, but in the second half he misjudged a ball he should have handled.

Danilo (5/10):

Inconsistent showing as he tries to nail down the starting right-back spot.

Thiago Silva (6/10):

To see Brazil conceding a goal from the air, on a set piece, is not usually a good sign for the centre-back. Still, Thiago Silva hit practically every pass he tried to help launch attacks.

Marquinhos (6/10):

The same assessment made about Thiago Silva can be used for Marquinhos.

Alex Telles (6/10):

Appeared more involved in the game than in the 3-0 over Ghana, showing Tite that he can be useful in the Qatar mission.

Casemiro (8/10):

Outstanding all over the pitch, the ex-Real Madrid star gave an exquisite assist for Raphinha's goal and drew the penalty converted by Neymar. He was decisive.

Fred (5/10):

Didn't make big mistakes, but he was just a little less electric than his team-mates.
