Fleming out of IPL

A round-up of the day’s news in the IPL

Cricinfo staff29-May-2008Fleming returns to New Zealand
Stephen Fleming, the Chennai Super Kings opener, will not be available for his team’s remaining matches as he is heading back to New Zealand for the birth of his child. Chennai have qualified for the IPL semi-finals and will now have to find a replacement opener for Fleming before Saturday.Jayaprakash retires
Indian umpire AV Jayaprakash has retired from all forms of the game after standing in the IPL match between the Bangalore Royal Challengers and the Mumbai Indians in Bangalore on Wednesday. Jayaprakash, 58, said he had come to a point where he was not enjoying umpiring matches and was mentally tired.Dravid not keen on two IPL’s a year
Rahul Dravid, the Bangalore Royal Challengers captain, said IPL commissioner Lalit Modi’s idea of having two editions of IPL from 2011 would be a “difficult” proposition. “It would be difficult considering the way the future tours are structured and the way matches are scheduled,” Dravid said. “I, personally, would hate any dilution of Test cricket to fit in another season of Twenty20. Test cricket has history and has a lot of value and I hope it is never tampered with.”IPL performances not to influence Pakistan selectors
Pakistan selectors will not consider IPL performances while naming the squad for the triangular series in Bangladesh, according to the chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed. “We are not going to consider the players’ showing in the IPL,” Ahmed said. “We believe that twenty20 is a different ball game and you can’t compare it to proper one-day internationals where you have to play 50-over games.”

Giles lay-off adds to England injury woes

England’s injury problems in Australia deepened today as their left-arm spinnerAshley Giles was ruled out for for up to six weeks.

Stephen Lamb & Ralph Dellor19-Nov-2002England’s injury problems on the Ashes tour of Australia deepened today as their left-arm spinner Ashley Giles was ruled out for up to six weeks with a fractured left wrist.Giles was hit by Durham fast bowler Steve Harmison in the nets at the Adelaide Oval while preparing for the second Test starting on Thursday. He continued with his net but was sent for an X-ray later after complaining of soreness."It was the first ball I faced from Harmy and it struck me at thepoint of the left wrist," said Giles. "At first I thought it was just bruising and kept on batting. But afterwards the pain just got worse and worse. Now I have been told I will be out for anything up to six weeks which is obviously very disappointing."That would mean that he will be unavailable until the fourth Test starting in Melbourne on Boxing Day. It will be a serious blow to the captain, Nasser Hussain, who has always turned to Giles as a means of exerting some control on the opposition batsmen.Giles and Hussain became the targets for much criticism last winter when he employed the negative tactics of bowling from over the wicket into the footmarks outside leg stump in an attempt to keep Sachin Tendulkar quiet. On this tour, however, he had been bowling well and had not been afraid to give the ball more air with a certain amount of success. So far on the tour Giles has taken 17 wickets in all matches at 32.17 each in all matches at under four runs an over. At a time when Australian batsmen in all forms of cricket have been enjoying themselves at the expense of English bowlers, that is a very creditable return. In the first Test in Brisbane he was the most successful of England’s bowlers with six wickets.Giles did not play in the match against Australia A in Hobart, giving a rare outing to off-spinner Richard Dawson who took one for 70 in 16 overs. The Yorkshireman now comes into contention for a place in the Adelaide Test team. Before Hobart, he had bowled only once on tour – in the opening festival match at Lilac Hill – where he failed to take a wicket in his five overs costing 35 runs.Dawson last played in a Test on the tour of India last winter when he made his debut and a favourable impression. It was his temperament as much as his play that marked him out as having a future in Test cricket then, and that will now face a severe examination if he is exposed to the Australian batsmen in Adelaide.

Wolves transfer update on Sanderson

Loads of Wolves fans have had something to say after a transfer update on the future of Dion Sanderson.

Co-writing in his latest piece for The Athletic, Wanderers journalist Tim Spiers has shared that the Midlands club are hoping to keep the central defender, who has rejected a contract offer at Molineux.

In turn, WWFC have rejected a £1m bid from Newcastle United to sign Sanderson, who only has one year left on his current deal, and the bid from the Magpies is thought to be considerably lower than his valuation.

Sanderson played a big part in Sunderland reaching the EFL League One play-offs, playing in no fewer than 26 games in total in the division (Transfermarkt), and at just 21 years of age, is clearly an emerging talent.

Nonetheless, a lot of Wolves supporters seem to be very unhappy with the money that is being offered for Sanderson, while others simply do not want him to leave.

These Wanderers flocked to the transfer update as it was shared on Twitter:

“Pathetic offer, This guy is going to be a star yet we may sell him, what are the ambitions of Wolves as it seems we don’t have any!”

“He needs to see a route to 1st team. Holding out on a new contract suggests he is pissed off. Offer him a loan with a Championship side until Xmas & commit to integrate him into 1st team squad next year. That should get him to extend his contract. They are messing this kid about”

“Did so well with Sunderland, and their manager heaped praise on him. Makes sense to see if he can play at a higher level. A higher end Championship team would be perfect. £1m seems a pitiful offer for his potential and even current ability”

“Do not let this kid walk because we’ve decided to be frugal. He has the talent.”

Morton, Sandher star as Canada and West Indies A draw in Toronto

A draw was always the most probable result in the two-day Canada- West Indies ‘A’ match in Toronto after a solid batting performance by Canada on the first day, and so it proved to be

Dave Liverman08-Aug-2002A draw was always the most probable result in the two-day Canada- West Indies ‘A’ match in Toronto after a solid batting performance by Canada on the first day, and so it proved to be. A century by Ruanako Morton was the highlight of a strong West Indian batting display as they took a lead on first-innings. Young Canadian spinner Kevin Sandher took five of the six wickets to fall, helped by some outstanding catching by Austin Codrington.Any hopes Canada had of extending their innings further on the second day were rapidly quashed when Patel was caught by Hibbert off the fifth ball of the morning bowled by Darren Powell. Canada had totalled a respectable 260, with Harris’ 71 the top score.Late addition to the squad Haniff opened the batting with captain Ganga against Codrington and Patel. The opening partnership had reached 33 when Patel had Haniff caught by Sandher. Ganga and Morton took the total past 100, Morton batting with aggressive intent, and out-scoring his partner. Sandher, who bowled unchanged for 30 straight overs after he was introduced into the attack, dismissed Ganga, and then Bravo, but the score steadily mounted.Harris experimented with a variety of bowlers but Morton cruised untroubled to his century. The Canadian bowling attack was somewhat experimental – Canada’s main attack at the ICC Trophy consisted of Seeberan, Davison, Joseph and Thuraisingham, all of whom were not playing in this match. It was invaluable experience however for the Canadians, and 22 year old Sandher in particular benefited from an extended outing against top class bats.Morton and Hinds took the West Indies into a first-innings lead before Morton was caught by at slip Harris off Sandher. Codrington took three catches, two of them quite exceptional -the one to dismiss Hinds was described by spectators as “unbelievable”. Fielding at long-off he sprinted hard then threw himself full length to take the ball inches from the ground. The bowler in all three cases was Sandher, and when West Indies declared he had taken five of the six wickets to fall. With only the first innings completed the match was drawn, but Canada had shown that they were more than competitive at the longer form of the game, after winning the one-day series. The West Indies players will look forward to returning home after two months on the road. The tour of England and Canada has been useful experience for the younger members of the party, and although no new stars have emerged, several players have strengthened their case for inclusion in the full squad. For Canada, however, the visit has been invaluable as their thoughts turn towards the World Cup this winter. The Canadian squad has varied considerably in the four matches and several younger players have had the opportunity to show their skills at a higher level. The victory in the one-day series will boost Canadian confidence considerably as they head to the West Indies to take part in the Red Stripe Bowl tournament next week.

Crystal Palace linked to Lucien Favre

A new candidate has emerged in Crystal Palace’s prolonged managerial pursuit, with former Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre now entering the frame.

What’s the story?

The Eagles have been searching for a new leader for many weeks following the departure of Roy Hodgson after four relatively successful years at the helm.

According to The Guardian, Palace have made contact with Favre’s representatives and are expected to hold talks with the 63-year-old over the coming days.

Fans will surely be buzzing

Several big names have been linked with the vacancy at Selhurst Park, including Chris Wilder, Frank Lampard and Eddie Howe.

It looked as though former Wolves manager Nuno Santo was set to take over the reins, though, until some last-minute demands from the Portuguese tactician saw that move fall through.

However, news that chairman Steve Parish is now targeting Favre will surely have the club’s supporters buzzing.

The Swiss boss has enjoyed successful stints at Ligue 1 outfit Nice and Dortmund in recent years, guiding them both into the Champions League while playing some exciting, entertaining football.

And it’s his style and reputation for nurturing young talent that has reportedly attracted the capital club’s hierarchy to Favre.

Palace had the oldest squad in the Premier League last season, and it’s a major issue that Parish is desperate to address over the next few years.

While Favre has been out of work since being sacked by BVB back in December, he did steer them to consecutive second-place finishes in the Bundesliga during his only two full seasons in charge.

And in that time, he oversaw the progression to young hopefuls such as Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho, who have become first-team stars ever since.

The retired Switzerland midfielder is thought to be keen to manage in the Premier League and is understood to have attracted interest from Everton as they plan for life after Carlo Ancelotti.

Having taken control of almost 800 games throughout his managerial career, Favre is an experienced head capable of achieving results greater than the sum of the parts available to him.

Given the sizeable task at hand for whoever takes the job in south London, having many years of knowledge and expertise will be essential for them to succeed next season.

Favre would be an ideal appointment for Palace, and their loyal fanbase will surely be urging Parish to get this deal over the line.

And, in other news…Huge update emerges about “phenomenal” £40.5m-rated Palace gem, fans will be gutted

Arul Suppiah enjoys success at the end of the day against West Indies 'A'

The West Indies `A’ ended the day in an almost unassailable position at Taunton where they were 453 runs ahead with three second innings wickets remaining at close of play

Richard Walsh25-Jul-2002The West Indies `A’ ended the day in an almost unassailable position at Taunton where they were 453 runs ahead with three second innings wickets remaining at close of play.Resuming on 60 without loss, Somerset lost debutant Neil Edwards early on after he had taken his score onto 31. Piran Holloway, Keith Parsons and Arul Suppiah all departed cheaply, and when Matt Wood was out after scoring 51 the Cidermen had slipped to 116 for 6.At this point Wes Durston and Carl Gazzard came together and shared a seventh wicket partnership of 38 before Durston (26) was run out just before lunchtime, going for a second run.Gazzard followed shortly after for 24, and despite an unbeaten 12 from Pete Trego Somerset were all out for 183.Rather than enforce the follow on the West Indies opted to bat for a second time, and at 177 for 4 seemed to be heading for another big score until Suppiah was introduced into the attack in the early evening. The slow left armer put the brakes on the West Indies who by close had moved onto 266 for 7, with Suppiah having the impressive figures of 10 overs 3 wickets for 46 runs.

Stevens at heart of Leicestershire Foxes big total

A magnificent innings of 125 from 119 balls by Darren Stevens has put Leicestershire Foxes into a good position in their Norwich Union League Division One match at Chester-le-Street

Ralph Dellor21-Jul-2002A magnificent innings of 125 from 119 balls by Darren Stevens has put Leicestershire Foxes into a good position in their Norwich Union League Division One match at Chester-le-Street. The Foxes reached an impressive 266 for seven in their 45 overs, with nobody other than Stevens even getting a half-century.The only real support came initially from Trevor Ward who compiled an uncharacteristically slow 33, taking 51 balls as he did. Otherwise, it was not until another Darren – Maddy – joined him that Stevens was able to find a partner who did not encounter problems with conditions and the bowling. Maddy only hit one boundary in the 19-ball innings, but he managed to scamper 30 runs to be not out at the close.Stevens, whose name appears in the provisional list of 20 to attend the ECB National Academy next winter, demonstrated just why he would not be out of place in such company. He came to the crease when Iain Sutcliffe was out early on, and did not depart until there were 256 on the board. By that time he had done his job and now it is up to the bowlers to see if they can heap more misery on the Durham Dynamos.

Everton could find new Pienaar in Brekalo

Football FanCast exclusively revealed last month that Everton were targeting a new winger in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The need to strengthen that part of the field has only been heightened with Richarlison’s poor run of form and James Rodriguez’s ongoing injury.

The former has only scored one goal since March while Everton’s Colombian superstar has been ruled out of the Copa America.

With Theo Walcott departing and Bernard potentially heading through the exit door, it means they may well be left quite short on the flanks.

Everton have had a number of targets in mind, however, with the likes of Moussa Diaby and Gareth Bale linked.

Bale seems a bit far-fetched but Diaby remains a realistic target. Possessing a frightening level of pace and the ability to beat a man, those ingredients seem to be at the top of the list of priorities.

Another gem within the Bundesliga that Everton are eyeing a move for is Josip Brekalo.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-transfer-news-lukaku-leao-bissouma-berge-antony” title=”Read the latest Everton transfer news!”]

The 22-year-old enjoyed a fabulous season in the German top-flight with Wolfsburg and has now caught the eye of the Premier League.

Bild (via Sport Witness) report that both Everton and Leeds are interested in signing the winger.

Brekalo would be a shrewd signing from the Toffees and by luring him to Goodison Park, they could find their new Steven Pienaar.

Their current target has a bit more pace than the South African but in terms of their attacking numbers and fluency, they are very alike.

Pienaar was a menace for Everton down the years, amassing 26 goals and 49 assists in 229 outings.

The winger played in a canny way, using his dribbling ability and slight frame of just 5 foot 7 to engineer his way past defenders and pick up tidy pockets of space.

Brekalo stands at a similarly petite height of just 5 foot 8. With that in mind, the Croatian sensation could roll back the years with his destructive play style.

Taking to Twitter last year, journalist Ronan Murphy outlined the youngster’s best qualities. He said: “The less said about his off-field antics the better, as he should leave his on-field performances do the talking. Able to unlock defences and strong cutting in to shoot, he will torment defenders everywhere.”

Pienaar had this clever ability to cause chaos for the opposition with his dribbling ability, registering as many as 1.7 successful take-ons per game in the 2010/11 campaign.

On top of that, he produced 2.2 shots per game and 1.6 key passes during the course of that campaign.

Brekalo has amassed similar numbers throughout his career, producing 1.2 key passes per match and 1.3 dribbles per game.

Those are ever so slightly behind Pienaar but given his tender age, there is still plenty of time for those areas to be improved.

After all, he’s already shown a competent streak in front of goal, scoring seven times this term.

A move to Everton could be exactly what he needs to take his game to the next level. Watch out Premier League defences.

AND in other news, Imagine him & Doucoure: Everton must swoop for £35m colossus, he’s shades of Fellaini…

Records galore but match ends in stalemate

Four days of beautiful sunshine, the trees in full spring blossom, a good crowd and two First Division sides doing battle at the start of the Frizzell County Championship

Vic Isaacs22-Apr-2002Four days of beautiful sunshine, the trees in full spring blossom, a good crowd and two First Division sides doing battle at the start of the Frizzell County Championship. Everything you could wish for, except one thing – a decent wicket.1,411 runs may seem like fun, and for the statisticians it was, but not many of the bowlers of both sides will be singing the praises of a match that ended in stalemate.

The fourth day saw John Crawley break a number of Hampshire records – Highest score by a Hampshire batsman on debut, best individual innings since the war, his sixth double century. For Hampshire their total of 671 for 8 (all out) two players were injured, left them tantalisingly close to breaking their own team record of 672-7dec against Somerset at Taunton in 1899. Kent’s first innings score was also their highest ever against Hampshire. So, yes the statistical anoraks amongst us may have been happy, but the end result left the supporters unfulfilled.Crawley’s 272 was a feat of concentration taking over 9 and half hours, but it may have given him a millstone when he comes out to bat at the Rosebowl later this week. “How do you follow that?”When Kent batted second time around, they found young Chris Tremlett a handful with the new ball, so the gentle pace of Will Kendall would have come as some relief. Hampshire had three substitute fielders on with father and son Jimmy and Stephen Cook, along with the more regular Mascarenhas who took two catches.Adrian Aymes will be seeing a specialist about his knee problem, Shaun Udal received a nasty crack on the thumb, but although very sore, x-rays revealed no break; Alex Morris did not field as a precaution against aggravating his sore back
