Kirby starts on bench against Paris FCHayes: Decision influenced by upcoming England gamesChelsea have one more game before int'l breakWHAT HAPPENED?

The England star was omitted from the starting XI against the UWCL giant killers at Stamford Bridge, with Hayes opting to field Sjoeke Nusken, Erin Cuthbert and Jessie Fleming in midfield. However, with the scores level at 1-1 heading into half time, the Chelsea boss opted to introduce Kirby for Fleming, with the Blues going on to score three unanswered, second-half goals – two of which were registered by Sam Kerr as she completed a 55-minute hat trick.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT EMMA HAYES SAID

Asked why Kirby did not start, Hayes explained that she had one eye on keeping the attacking midfielder fit for England's upcoming games. "I felt there was a lot of work out of possession that over 90 minutes might have been too much for Fran I said this to Sarina [Wiegman] this morning. It’s so important we keep her healthy for England and Chelsea," she said.

"And while Fran always wants to play in every moment, I felt that was the perfect cameo for her. The team needed it. I thought we didn’t work close enough to Sam [Kerr] in the first half, I thought we struggled to build in a double pivot. I changed that shape after 20 minutes but we were sloppy in the first half."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kirby was recently named in Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses squad for vital UEFA Women's Nations League clashes against the Netherlands and Scotland. Following an unexpected away defeat to Belgium in the last international break, England's chances of qualifying for the finals – and thus securing Great Britain's place at next year's Olympic football tournament – are out of their hands.

USMNT's 'Pirate of the Caribbean' Jesus Ferreira deserves a European transfer after Gold Cup heroics

The young striker is lighting up CONCACAF and, despite his critics, seems poised for a move across the Atlantic in the near future.

Say what you want about the levels of crazy in American soccer, but you have to acknowledge that United States men's national team fans have a sense of humor. Their most recent moment of hysteria centers around Jesus Ferreira, the young USMNT striker that has been blessed with a tongue-in-cheek nickname that has social media in hysterics.

'The Pirate of the Caribbean' is a nickname born as a response to Ferreira's goalscoring record. He has been scoring for fun with the USMNT, especially at the ongoing Gold Cup, but not everyone is impressed.

Ferreira's goals, by and large, have come against CONCACAF's smaller teams, hence the nickname. When given the chance to face some of the weaker teams in the region, Ferreira has always made sure to pour it on, having now scored 14 goals in just 21 USMNT appearances. That puts him just three goals away from cracking the USMNT's top 10 goalscorers, and he's only 22.

That accomplishment, though, is viewed through two lenses. The pessimist points to the fact that those goals are coming against overmatched opponents in largely one-sided games. The optimist, meanwhile, sees goals, regardless of where they're coming from or who against, and, for a USMNT program that lacked goals for so long, how could that be a bad thing?

As the summer goes on, though, several opinions will begin to show themselves, and they're the most important ones. No, we're not talking about USMNT's rabid Twitter fanbase; we're talking about those in charge at European clubs, many of whom will be taking a close look at Ferreira after this summer's goal explosion.

Some already have been looking and, at some point, Ferreira will almost certainly make his big move. He's certainly earned the chance to go from pillaging the North American region to one of Europe's top leagues.

Getty ImagesFerreira's career so far

The 22-year-old USMNT star's road to the No.9 race is an interesting one, mostly because he wasn't always a No.9. Originally an attacking midfielder for FC Dallas, Ferreira transitioned to the position after Ricardo Pepi's big move to Europe following his MLS breakout. Pepi is, of course, now one of the players Ferreira is competing with for a spot in the USMNT striker pool.

After scoring 18 goals across his first 81 appearances, Ferreira's transition to playing as FC Dallas' No.9 was seamless, as he scored 18 goals in 2022 alone. He has followed that up with 10 more in his first 18 games of the 2023 MLS season.

Internationally, Ferreira became a regular for the U.S. in 2022, earning a spot at the World Cup. He started just once in Qatar, a disappointing runout against the Netherlands, but looks set to have a say as the 2026 cycle gets underway.

AdvertisementGettyA Pirate's Life

Through just 21 appearances, Ferreira has 14 goals, an impressive total. There are some caveats, though, when it comes to the competition those goals have been scored against.

Of those 14, five have come against Trinidad & Tobago, four came against Grenada, while three came against Saint Kitts and Nevis. One, meanwhile, was scored in a World Cup qualifier against Panama while another was scored in a friendly draw against Mexico. It's not an impressive list, for sure.

Meanwhile, just that one goal against Mexico has come in a game that wasn't a total blowout. Every other match that Ferreira has scored in has ended in at least a four-goal USMNT win. That record, of course, has led to the new nickname, which pokes fun at Ferreira's tendency to crush CONCACAF's minnows. Ferreira, though, isn't worried about those criticizing his goal record.

"For me, as a forward, it's always my job to score goals, to come in and try to score goals against whoever's in front of us," he said before putting three past Trinidad & Tobago in the USMNT's Gold Cup group stage finale. "Yeah, I've scored a lot of goals against Caribbean teams, but, like I said, my job is to score goals and I'm gonna do that no matter who's in front of us."

His interim coach, B.J. Callaghan, has also been impressed, as the former No.10 has done a little of everything for a USMNT side that is among the favorites to win the trophy this summer.

“All forwards are going to be judged by the goals that they score, first and foremost. When I see his movement and his confidence in the penalty box, you can tell that the game has slowed down for him,” Callaghan said. “All of the work that he’s doing, leading our line defensively, dropping back, helping build-up play, for me he’s having a really complete tournament.”

Getty ImagesMaking history

Just 21 games into his USMNT career, Ferreira is already making history. With his hat-trick against St. Kitts & Nevis, he became the fastest player to hit double-digit goals in a USMNT shirt. With his treble against Trinidad & Tobago, he became the first American to score three goals in back-to-back games, while equalling Landon Donovan for most USMNT hat-tricks, with three.

Say what you want about caveats or levels of opposition, but those numbers do mean something. Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, Christian Pulisic… all have played against similar teams, but it's Ferreira that, at the moment, is lighting them up.

And it's not just the finishes themselves, but also the quality. Look at Ferreira's first goal against T&T as an example. It was a fantastic striker's finish, as Ferreira took one touch, set himself up and fired into the back of the net. It was quality, no matter who it came against.

Still, perspective and nuance is difficult in this day and age, and Ferreira is perhaps the best example of that fact.

Getty ImagesA bit of perspective

Alexi Lalas isn't always known for giving the most measured takes, but his analysis of Ferreira's play is spot on. "You can look at Jesus Ferreira with perspective and recognize that he's doing this against inferior opposition," Lalas said on his podcast. "You can also look at it as an incredible moment in this player's life where everything he's touching is turning to gold, or goal as this case may be. An American is scoring goals for America at a historical pace, and that is fun, it is worth praise, and is worth celebrating.

"Does it mean he's going to become Messi or the U.S. is going to win the World Cup? No! But at this time, at this moment with this group at this Gold Cup, this is fun to see and if you crap on it, then you have bigger problems."

Two things can be true at once. Ferreira can be playing fantastic soccer, showing why there are plenty of reasons to be excited about his development. He could also be doing so against teams he should be lighting up on a regular basis.

Ferreira, though, finds himself in an impossible situation. If he fails to score, it's because he isn't good enough. If he scores too many, it's because the opponent isn't good enough. There's no winning. For many, the narrative around him has been written, largely based on one game at the World Cup. He didn't score against Virgil van Dijk in his first World Cup game, and that'll be enough for some to move on.

Ferreira, too, has moved on by scoring goal after goal for club and country ever since. And that is good news, no matter which way you look at it.

Can the USMNT really trust irresponsible Sergino Dest again? Winners and losers from Nations League triumph over Trinidad & Tobago as U.S. stumble their way into Copa America

Gregg Berhalter's team accomplished their end goal, but it's safe to say it wasn't a convincing process…

In the end, they got there. The United States men's national team is headed to the 2024 Copa America on home soil, which, ultimately, was the big goal of this camp. However, there was no big celebration, no big blowout of champagne or anything like that. The mood, overall, was somewhat somber. Despite defeating Trinidad & Tobago on aggregate, Monday night certainly didn't feel like a win.

That's because it wasn't; it was a 2-1 loss. That defeat left a sour taste after what will, in the end, be seen as a hugely important camp. It's one that will have lasting ramifications, and not just because of the tournament runs it set the U.S. up for.

With the road to the Copa America now officially beginning, everything the U.S. does will now have one eye towards the summer, and it's safe to say that Sergino Dest hasn't started that road off well at all. His boneheaded red card left his team-mates seething, with the defender being scolded for his "immature" and "disrespectful" decision-making.

That leaves his grip right-back spot a bit less tight than it was before, and it raises a huge question: With two red cards in two big games just a few months apart, can the U.S. really trust Dest the most intense of situations?

That'll be one talking point going forward, but there's plenty do discuss. So, with that said, GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from camp…

GettyWINNER: Antonee Robinson

The big winner of the camp, not that Antonee Robinson needed that title, to be fair. Gregg Berhalter called him an "animal" after the second match, and it feels like a good description. Robinson did just about everything asked of him after missing the October window, proving once again why he's so key to this team.

He's been the left-back for quite some time, and despite the emergence of Kristoffer Lund, it doesn't feel like that'll change any time soon. There's no one in the pool quite as complete as Robinson, who brings so much to the team.

With the U.S., he plays a bit more attacking than he does at Fulham, and he seems to enjoy it. In two games this camp, he got two goals, which is always a nice sight from the full-back position.

AdvertisementGettyLOSER: Sergino Dest

We already discussed what Dest's dismissal meant in the moment, but now it's time to look at the bigger picture. This incident, his second inexcusable red card of the year after that Nations League mess against Mexico, now leads to one big question: Can the USMNT trust Dest to keep his cool?

On the latest evidence, the answer is no. The Mexico incident is one we can kind of excuse, as players sometimes lose their tempers in those sorts of rivalry games. Getting sent off against Trinidad & Tobago with your team up 4-0 on aggregate? That's not passion; it's stupidity.

Do you think South America's top teams won't have seen that? If a relative minnow like Trinidad & Tobago can get in Dest's head, what do you think a team like Argentina, Brazil or Uruguay can do when the heat is turned up much, much higher?

Dest's play style already makes him something of a liability in those big games, but it seems his mentality may do so as well. And, with the Copa America looming, he has a lot of trust to earn back if he's to make an impact in next summer's tournament.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Gio Reyna

All of the prior nonsense feels like it's even more in the past, as Gio Reyna is more important to this team than ever right now. His goal in the first game was a great finish, one that really put the tie out of reach. He combined well with Folarin Balogun during the sequence and has, realistically, been the only USMNT player to unlock any sort of on-field chemistry with the striker so far.

The finish marked Reyna's third goal in two games, which makes it pretty clear that the past is well and truly behind him. Injuries have thrust him into the XI, no doubt, but his presence in midfield is now undeniable. When he came off after Dest's red card on Monday, the U.S. never looked the same, lacking the control and creativity in midfield to do anything but survive in that second half.

Overall, it's safe to say that Reyna, in just a few games, has rebuilt things quite a bit under Berhalter. It'll take a bit more time to truly earn back the trust of some sections of the USMNT fanbase, but it's clear that this past winter's incident isn't hanging over player or coach. All involved have moved on and, at least so far, taken things to another level, which is a credit to the player and person Reyna is as he leaps into this next phase of his USMNT career.

GettyLOSER: Folarin Balogun

We'll start by saying that, overall, Balogun's return is pretty good so far. The striker has three goals and two assists in about 530 minutes since debuting for the national team. If your striker averages just under one goal contribution-per-90, you'll probably take that, especially if you're the USMNT.

However, these felt like games where Balogun could really assert himself as the USMNT's superstar attacker. Without the injured Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah, these felt like games where Balogun could step up, score some goals and carry a team that needed a bit of juice without two star forwards. Instead, we leave camp saying that Balogun is still adjusting to the USMNT, and that the USMNT is still adjusting to Balogun.

His first game wasn't bad, as he did get that assist on Reyna's goal. However, Ricardo Pepi certainly outshined him with his fantastic flicked-on goal to open the scoring off the bencg. The second game? Little more than a cardio session, as Balogun was limited to mainly hold-up play outside of one early chance.

It's clear that the USMNT is still learning how to play with Balogun. He's a different type of striker than any the U.S. has ever had and adjusting to his skillset will take time. His first real games against a lesser CONCACAF team, though, should have been a chance for Balogun to dominate on quality alone, and he never really did that throughout the two matches.

Belgium 3-2 Japan & the 23 best-ever World Cup games

Goal takes a look at the best classic World Cup matches of yesteryear in anticipation for this summer's tournament in Russia

GettyBelgium 3-2 Japan | 2018

It took until the 93rd minute for Belgium to claim a 3-2 victory over Japan in their last 16 fixture, staging an incredible comeback after finding themselves 2-0 down just after the break.

Belgium missed a host of chances throughout the game with Romelu Lukaku able to have a hat-trick but spurning every opportunity. Japan – outsiders to win the tie – scored twice in the span of four minutes in the second half to visibly shake Belgium, and were the superior team for large amounts of the game.

Roberto Martinez's side, however, were able to dig deep and score three goals after Japan's opening brace. Jan Vertonghen and Marouane Fellaini (the unlikely hero) netted to make it 2-2 before Nacer Chadli scored in the final minute of stoppage time to cap off a brilliant counter-attacking move by Belgium.

AdvertisementFrance 4-3 Argentina | 2018

It was the Kylian Mbappe show as the young forward slotted home twice and played an instrumental role in the build-up to the first goal to send Argentina and Lionel Messi home at the last 16 stage.

France opened the scoring through an Antoine Griezmann spot-kick but Argentina levelled through Angel Di Maria. Benjamin Pavard netted again to put Les Bleus in the lead before Gabriel Mercardo struck home to equalise – but Mbappe scored twice in the span of four minutes to put his side 4-2 up.

Sergio Aguero scored in stoppage time to make it 4-3 but it wasn't enough to force the game into extra time.

It was a thrilling encounter on all sides that fully allowed France to finally showcase their quality in Russia following underwhelming opening group stage performances.

The victory for France means that Argentina crash out disappointingly, and Les Bleus will face either Portugal or Uruguay in the quarter-final.

GettySpain 3-3 Portugal | 2018

Spain vs Portugal was always the match that would have the most build-up ahead of the 2018 World Cup, and it lived up to the hype and more. Enthralling from start to finish, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a penalty to put Portugal up under four minutes before Diego Costa netted shortly afterwards to equalise. Spain led eventually through a fine Isco screamer and another Costa goal, but it wasn't enough to keep Ronaldo quiet.

The Real Madrid star scored an incredible free-kick just before the end of regular time, bagging a hat-trick in the process and putting his name in the history books as he has now scored in four consecutive World Cups. David de Gea's goalkeeping blunder wasn't even the talk of the match as Ronaldo proved that he remains his country's talisman and could very well lead his team far in Russia. The group game between the rival nations has already earned classic status.

In an exclusive interview with , Conte said: "We’re talking about a player who is amazing. This opportunity to play for Bayern Munich made him better. No doubt about his capacity to score.

"I think he needed to go and to change, to find another club, another mentality, another situation. It was important for him. He deserves to win trophies and we are talking about one of the best strikers in the world. He is one of the best I’ve worked with, for sure. He’s a good guy and a good person too. He needed this new experience, another chance. Now he is a more complete player than before.”

Conte raised questions about Tottenham's mentality and aimed a dig at his former club after he found it "really strange" to celebrate a fourth-place finish. Odegaard out, Vieira in? Arsenal team news, predicted XI and key man vs Bodo/Glimt

The Gunners are back in Europa League action on Thursday and GOAL takes a look at who could feature at the Emirates

Arsenal host Bodo/Glimt on Thursday night looking to take a firm hold on Group A. Victory at the Emirates will see them move above their Norwegian opponents to the top of the table, despite having played a game less.

The Gunners opened up their Europa League campaign with a win at FC Zurich on September 8, but then had their next match against PSV postponed due to the death of the Queen.

Ahead of Thursday night’s clash with Bodo, GOAL takes a look at some of the big pre-match talking points, including the latest Arsenal team news and the predicted starting XI.

Getty ImagesArsenal team news

Mikel Arteta is expected to shuffle his pack significantly following last weekend’s North London Derby success against Tottenham.

The Arsenal boss will have one eye on Sunday’s crucial meeting with Liverpool, so will look to give many of his star names some time off.

Likely just two of the players who started against Tottenham will line up to face Bodo, with Gabriel Magalhaes and Granit Xhaka the pair who could figure.

Emile Smith Rowe (groin) and Mohamed Elneny (hamstring) are the only two players who are definitely out.

Oleksandr Zinchenko could be omitted from the squad as a precaution. He was seen limping away from the stadium following the North London derby and could be given some extra rest by Mikel Arteta with the Liverpool game in mind.

Cedric Soares comes back into contention having returned to full training on Tuesday following three weeks out.

AdvertisementGettyTalking points

The big talking point ahead of the game is where Arteta can find time to rest Xhaka.

While almost all of the team that started against Spurs are expected to get the night off, Xhaka will more than likely begin in midfield – just as he did against FC Zurich in the opening group stage game.

That will mean he has started every single game of Arsenal’s season so far and – barring any injury issue – he will do so again when Liverpool visit the Emirates on Sunday.

Long-term injuries to Emile Smith Rowe and Mohamed Elneny have stretched Arteta’s options in midfield and that has forced the Spaniard to use the overworked Xhaka more than he would have liked.

The Switzerland international does have excellent fitness levels and rarely gets sidelined, but Arteta will be well aware that he needs to tread carefully with the 30-year-old and not risk him picking up any sort of fatigue injury.

Arteta also has a decision to make over the fitness of Cedric Soares.

He returned to full training on Tuesday after three weeks out and is in contention to play on Thursday night. Arteta now has to decide whether the right-back is ready to start.

If he is, that could allow the Gunners boss to rest Gabriel Magalhaes, as Cedric could line up on the right side of the back four, with Takehiro Tomiyasu moving alongside Rob Holding at centre-back.

Getty ImagesWhat has the manager said?

Speaking ahead of the game, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said the Europa League will give Reiss Nelson the opportunity to stake his claim for some regular game time.

The winger spent last season on loan with Feyenoord and hasn't featured in the current campaign due to his injury.

He is now fully fit, however, and is expected to get some game time against Bodo.

"After the spell he had last year on loan, we wanted him back to see if there were any changes [with him]," Arteta said. "The potential is there. We always hang in there [with Nelson] because we see something really special.

"Now he is going to have an opportunity. He's fully fit and ready to play. He just needs minutes.

"The way he has matured in the last year or so has been really impressive, now he needs to do it on the pitch."

Getty ImagesKey man

The sensational form of Gabriel Jesus has forced Eddie Nketiah to feed off scraps so far in the Premier League.

Nketiah has featured in every single league game so far this season, but the longest he has been on the pitch is 29 minutes.

So he will be desperate to make an impression from the start against Bodo – just as he did when he led the line away at FC Zurich in the opening group stage game.

The 23-year-old set up the opening goal for Marquinhos in that one and then scored the winner in the 2-1 success.

He will be out to replicate that sort of form on Thursday night and if he can, he will go a long way to firing Arteta’s side to the victory they need.

After a run of three consecutive defeats Erik ten Hag is at the lowest point of his spell in charge and the goodwill shown towards the manager from the previous campaign is fast running out.

The manager has been beset by off-field problems including a spate of injuries, serious accusations against Antony and a feud with Jadon Sancho. And now more cracks are beginning to appear in the form of leaked reports of unrest among the squad.

However, it is far from the only time United have made a miserable start to a campaign and they have turned things around in the past. And despite the early doom and gloom, United can still turn this difficult season into one to remember.

GOAL outlines six ways United can stop the rot and get their chaotic season back on track…

Getty ImagesMake promising starts count

It sounds very simple but the easiest way for United to ease their troubles is to start finishing off the early chances they have been creating in matches and take the lead in rather than being forced to chase it. Although the results do not suggest it, United have actually started well in most of their games this season, particularly the ones they have ended up losing.

They had a dominant first half against Tottenham, with Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes each missing glaring chances at 0-0 and Antony hammering the woodwork just after Spurs had taken the lead after the break. It was a similar story against Brighton and Bayern Munich, with Rashford spurning early opportunities against the Seagulls and Christian Eriksen passing up a glorious opening at the Allianz Arena.

There are parallels with United's form towards the end of last season, when they failed to take advantage of strong starts at West Ham and at Brighton, and even in the 7-0 drubbing at Liverpool.

Then they lacked firepower up front due to Wout Weghorst's lack of quality and Anthony Martial's lack of fitness but their frontline is slowly coming together now that Rasmus Hojlund has recovered from injury and has put the ball in the net in his last two appearances, getting off the mark in Munich after his strike against Brighton was disallowed.

United have a habit of crumbling in matches once they face their first setback but if they can score the first goal their luck could well start turning.

Ten Hag's Ajax side loved to have the ball but the Dutchman has so far struggled to make United a team that are truly comfortable in possession and happy to retain it for long periods. His three predecessors – Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick – favoured reactive to proactive football and that was what Ten Hag ended up reverting to after last season's nightmare opening results against Brighton and Brentford.

But the coach needs to enact the vision he first had for the team and oversee the transition from counter-attacking to playing on the front foot, an idea he has talked about enthusiastically before. He also has the players to do it, especially after signing Andre Onana, arguably the best passing goalkeeper in the world and having two fine ball-playing centre-backs in Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane (when he is fit).

There is another reason for United to get better with the ball. The defeats to Brighton and Bayern, in which they had 44 per cent and 40 per cent possession respectively, showed how the likes of Eriksen and Casemiro no longer have the legs or breath to chase the ball for long periods.

In the absence of many energetic midfielders, United have little choice but to get better with the ball.

GettyPlay Mount on the right

Mason Mount was the first player United signed this summer but he has been largely unable to contribute after getting injured in only his second match of the season. The midfielder did not have memorable performances against Wolves or Tottenham before hurting his hamstring but he is now back in training and could return against Burnley.

And he has the chance to take advantage of Antony and Sancho's problems and claim the vacant position on the right of United's attack. After all, Mount had the best individual season of his career while playing on the right of Chelsea's attack in the 2021-22 season, scoring 13 times and contributing 16 assists.

Ten Hag was attracted to Mount due to his versatility but he needs to play in the same position regularly if he wants to be consistent and he could be the best candidate on the right of the attack, with more experience than Facundo Pellistri and more discipline than Alejandro Garnacho.

Getty ImagesGive Casemiro more support

The Brazilian was one of United's most influential players last season and his drop in form has been a real concern. He is now starting to look exactly like a player who is 31 and has spent the last decade fiercely competing at the highest level.

Casemiro still has plenty to give and his two goals against Bayern showed his quality as well as his determination. But he needs to be managed better. For starters, he should be given more opportunities to rest so he remains in peak condition.

He should also be given more support on the pitch and he needs a more energetic runner than Christian Eriksen, also 31, by his side. Sofyan Amrabat should play a key role once he starts playing and if the Moroccan is integrated well then he should be able to ease the burden on Casemiro. Prolonging the Brazilian's powers, rather than exhausting them, should be an absolute priority for Ten Hag.

Romelu Lukaku, Folarin Balogun and 11 strikers Tottenham should target to replace Harry Kane

Spurs are facing a race against time to replace their offensive talisman before the transfer window closes…

It's been touted to be happening for years, but there was still an element of disbelief when Harry Kane pulled on a Bayern Munich shirt for the first time on Saturday. The man who had dragged Tottenham to the dizziest heights of their modern era – almost single-handedly at times – has left the building. Now, Spurs need to find a new hero – and fast.

With less than three weeks left until the summer transfer window closes, Spurs are facing the daunting prospect of Richarlison leading the line single-handedly for the entire season, unless they can recruit a new No.9.

At least Daniel Levy has a sizeable chunk of change to play with, with Bayern paying an initial €100m (£86.1m/$108.8m) plus add-ons for Kane. Then again, in the current market, even a war chest that size does not give you complete freedom, meaning Ange Postecoglou may need to settle for one of the names lower down on his shortlist.

Ahead of what is set to be a hectic few weeks, GOAL has taken a look at how Tottenham could go about completing the impossible job of replacing Kane:

Getty ImagesRicharlison (Tottenham)

Tottenham have already spent £50m+ ($63.5m) on a potential Kane replacement in the relatively recent past. Richarlison's maiden season in north London following his arrival from Everton was pretty shambolic, however, with the Brazilian scoring just once in the Premier League.

Prior to this sharp drop off in form, he boasted a fairly reliable record in front of goal and was trusted with filling Kane's boots against Brentford on the opening weekend. The reviews were mixed at best. He had a handful of chances but again drew a blank, with Postecoglou calling for better service from those behind him moving forward.

“I thought we could have been a little bit more direct to him and look for him a little bit more,” the Spurs boss said. “He was making some good runs and he was working hard. He had a couple of half-opportunities, but I thought we could have created more for him. The key for us with Richy is to keep supporting him because he’s working awfully hard for the team in a defensive sense and when we get in that front third I thought we didn’t look enough for him today. I have got a lot of time for him. He’s a striker and he’s got a lot of great attributes and he will always work hard for the team, and that’s a good starting point for me.”

While his manager is convinced he will come good, Spurs could clearly use another centre-forward. Should Richarlison go down with an injury, Postecoglou would be left scratching around for a No.9, with Son Heung-min or Manor Solomon likely to be asked to play out of position.

Romelu Lukaku has endured a miserable few months. Since missing golden chance in the Champions League final for Inter, the Belgian has managed to alienate the only fanbase that has ever loved him unconditionally, and there is now next to no chance of him securing a permanent return to San Siro.

Following significant supporter backlash, Juventus no longer seem interested either, while links with Saudi Arabia have cooled significantly too. As a result, Lukaku is in limbo at Chelsea, with new manager Mauricio Pochettino showing no indication that he is part of his plans. Could Tottenham offer Lukaku salvation? Quite possibly.

Things haven't gone tremendously well since Lukaku left Inter the first time, but it's worth remembering what earned him his big-money move to Stamford Bridge in the first place. Between 2019 and 2021, the 30-year-old could not stop scoring, with his goals propelling the Nerazzurri to the Serie A title in 2021.

It's clear Lukaku needs a bit of love to thrive and he would get that in abundance under Postecoglou's care. As long as Spurs' other forwards can get close to him when they're attacking, he should be a snug fit stylistically too.

Wages could be an issue, but then again Chelsea are desperate to sell, which puts Daniel Levy in a strong negotiating position. This is one to watch very closely over the next few weeks.

(C)Getty imagesDusan Vlahovic (Juventus)

Like Lukaku, Dusan Vlahovic might be regretting his most recent transfer. The Serbian had his pick of Europe's top clubs when he opted to leave Fiorentina partway through the 2021-22 season, eventually opting to remain in Italy by joining Juventus. Vlahovic's time in Turin, however, has been punctuated by off-field turmoil and on-field dysfunction under Max Allegri – with the frontman managing just 23 goals in 63 appearances.

There are several reasons for his underwhelming form. A troublesome groin injury has limited his influence, while the highly-pragmatic Allegri has been accused of shackling the Serbian's potential by asking him to play too deep. The manager does not appear to be leaving Turin any time soon, so Vlahovic might have to be the one to move on.

While he would likely prefer to join a Champions League club, no one who fits this description appears to be searching for a striker. Tottenham would represent a welcome change of scenery, and Postecoglou would no doubt facilitate his return to the penalty-box predator that took Europe by storm a few years back.

The chance to be Spurs' undisputed star man is also likely to appeal. Vlahovic is certainly no shrinking violet, taking Cristiano Ronaldo's No.7 shirt after arriving at Juventus.

GettyFolarin Balogun (Arsenal)

Folarin Balogun had been expected to join Inter this summer, with the United States men's national team star dropping a huge hint that the Serie A side was his preferred destination by posting a clip of himself watching prime Ronaldo Nazario highlights from his time at San Siro.

However, despite the striker's clear preference to join the Nerazzurri, a concrete offer has not emerged, opening the door for other clubs to sign him. West Ham and Monaco have both been linked, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Tottenham enter the fray too.

Balogun enjoyed a breakout 2022-23, netting a stunning 21 goals for mid-table Reims in Ligue 1. That's more league goals than Marcus Rashford, Karim Benzema and Lionel Messi managed last season.

Balogun is a lethal finisher, but is also able to fashion chances for himself thanks to his excellent dribbling ability. Naysayers may point to his lack of assists, but with James Maddison arriving at Spurs this summer, whoever replaces Kane will not have to be anywhere near as creative as he was in his prime.

Obviously, crossing the north London divide would not make him a popular man with Arsenal supporters, but with some Gunners fans already beginning to sour on the U.S. international, he may not mind ruffling a few feathers.
