Matthew Hoggard claimed the third hat-trick of his career but then saw his Leicestershire side throw away the advantage with some poor batting on the second day of the County Championship game against Glamorgan at Grace Road. Glamorgan were bundled out for 146 to give Leicestershire a useful first-innings lead of 92, but the home side failed to capitalise as they struggled through to 78 for 5 by the close to leave the match evenly balanced on a pitch offering encouragement for both the seamers and the spinners.Glamorgan’s innings was a one-man show with their new captain and opener Alviro Petersen scoring 91 before being last man out. The South African struck seven fours and two sixes in his 165-ball innings to show the pitch was not quite the minefield many of the other batsmen had made it look on a day when 16 wickets fell for 231 runs.Ben Wright and Robert Croft were Glamorgan’s next highest scorers with 11 runs apiece after Hoggard had wrecked their top order with his hat-trick spell. He had Gareth Rees caught behind off the fifth ball of his sixth over of the morning, trapped Will Bragg lbw with the next delivery and then saw Will Jefferson take a superb catch at slip to remove Michael Powell with the firstball of his next over.It was the first hat-trick by a Leicestershire bowler since Javagal Srinath performed the feat against Surrey at The Oval in 2002 and the first at Grace Road since Winston Benjamin did it against Australia in 1989. The last Championship hat-trick at Grace Road was by George Ferris in 1983.Glamorgan then were 38 for 3 and wickets continued to tumble on a regular basis as left-arm spinner Claude Henderson followed up his innings of 80 not out in Leicestershire’s total of 238 with a three-wicket haul. He removed Croft, Graham Wagg and Dean Cosker to finish with 3 for 32, with only Petersen offering any resistance as the visitors collapsed. The Glamorgan captain batted superbly until finally pulling a catch off Nathan Buck to Henderson having made 91. But Leicestershire were soon in trouble themselves with the first three batsmen falling for 36 runs in the opening 17 overs.Matthew Boyce was bowled offering no shot to a delivery from Wagg who also had Jacques Du Toit caught at second slip. Adam Shantry then took James Taylor’s wicket before Cosker struck twice, dismissing both Gregg Smith and Tom New for ducks to leave Leicestershire at 43 for 5.It took a solid unbeaten 48 from Jefferson to see them through to the close when they held a lead of 170.

Kervezee and Shakib leave Surrey reeling

The comments were roundly dismissed as absurd. How could anyone compare an untried teenager to Hick? But Pont’s words may prove remarkably prescient. For while Kervezee will never emulate Hick at county level – no-one ever will – he may well end his career with a superior record in international cricket.Certainly Kervezee’s batting in this game has been outstanding. Not only did he produce his third first-class century of the campaign, but he passed 1,000 championship runs for the season. For a man of just 20 years of age, that is quite an achievement. It may well prove to be the defining contribution in an otherwise evenly-contested match. If Surrey are to achieve their victory target of 369, it will be the second highest winning fourth-innings total in the club’s first-class history. The highest remains the 410-8 they made at Canterbury in 2002.That target looked mightily distant by stumps on the third day. Though Surrey started their chase pretty well, an inexplicable moment of madness from Tom Lancefield precipitated a collapse and the visitors lost four wickets for the addition of four runs in 22 balls. With just four-and-a-half overs left of the day, Lancefield skipped down the pitch and drove obligingly – and quite unnecessarily – to mid-on. Stuart Meaker, the nightwatchman, was punished for thrusting his pad into his forward defensive stroke, before Mark Ramprkash was bowled, second delivery, by a lovely arm ball. It left Shakib Al Hasan with three wickets in eight deliveries without conceding a run. Gareth Andrew soon capitalised by trapping Arun Harinath leg before, playing across a straight one. Surrey will have to bat remarkably well to deny Worcestershire. With the wicket providing assistance for the spinners, Shakib is likely to prove irresistible. But if it proves to be Shakib who seals the win, it will have been Kervezee who built the platform. With the game in the balance (Worcestershire were just 112 ahead when they lost their fourth wicket, Moeen Ali driving loosely to mid-off), he produced a high-class demonstration of batting, unleashing scorching drives, commanding pulls and delicious flicks through mid-wicket. His almost dismissive treatment of Gareth Batty’s off-spin brought particularly warm applause. Batty, a former player who defected at the end of last season, is not the most popular man in these parts. If Kervezee was a little loose initially – he flashed the ball before lunch just over gully – he was into his stride in the afternoon session. Timing the ball delightfully, he contributed 98 of the 190 runs Worcestershire scored in just 35 overs. Andrew, with 34 from 32 balls, helped him add 74 in just 61 balls in what will surely prove to be the partnership that defines the game.Perhaps only Jimmy Taylor of young county batsmen offers more promise than Kervezee. But not even Taylor can match Kervezee for style. He sustained one crushing blow on the head from a short ball from Meaker, but was straight back in line to the next delivery and looked unflustered by everything Surrey through at him. A Namibian and Dutch descent, Kervezee qualifies for England at end of 2011. It will be relevant. It is surely fitting that Kervezee will provide a lasting legacy of Mark Newton’s time at Worcestershire. Newton steps down as chief executive of the club at the end of September after a decade in the post, but his influence will be felt many years into the future. It was Newton’s swift action that secured the services of Kervezee four years ago. With several other clubs – including local rivals, Warwickshire – looking at Kervezee with interest, Newton seized the moment and flew to Holland. There he meet the boy and his parents in the airport and quickly agreed a contract. It was an astute move. Securing Kervezee on a five-year contract extension a few weeks ago will surely prove equally astute.Kervezee won’t be Newton’s only legacy. Despite coping with floods, a recession, the mass defection of players and the insolvency of a major sponsor, Newton has overseen the building of The Graeme Hick Pavilion and the Basil D’Oliveira Stand at New Road. The club are also optimistic that they will be able to announce the next phase of the ground redevelopment – which includes a hotel – within the next few weeks. If they do so, it will alleviate much of the financial pressure which currently burdens them. From the depths of 2007, when the club lost over a million pounds, it’s hard to see how anyone could have done a better job than Newton. It is interesting to note, however, that his replacement, David Leatherdale, will not be replaced as the club’s commercial director. Times are desperately tight in county cricket. For that reason, there is also some doubt over the future of Vikram Solanki. Though he is contracted for another two years at New Road, the club may well be willing to listen to offers. In these straitened times, the salaries of senior players are increasingly hard to justify and Solanki’s return of just 593 runs at an average of 27 hardly makes a compelling case for retainment. But if this season really is about building for the future, then Worcestershire supporters have brighter times ahead. For in Kervezee they have a gem. Batty, Meaker and Dernbach were all punished for more than four an over and, by the time he reached his century (off just 103 balls), he looked a class apart. It was a different game when Chris Tremlett had the ball in his hand. His opening spell (8-4-4-2) removed David Wheeldon, who paid the price for playing slightly across one that nipped back, before Vikram Solanki’s tentative prod at a beauty that bounced and left him ended up in the hands of slip. Tremlett returned later to dismiss Shakib, caught off the glove as he attempted to hook, and bowl Kervezee as the batsmen sought to hit out with only tailenders for company.Tremlett finished with his fifth four-wicket haul of the season and match figures of eight for 87. Geoff Miller has already watched him in this match and can only have been impressed.

The third Test of New Zealand’s tour of India will be played in Nagpur in November after the original hosts, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), backed out citing the renovation work going at the Wankhede Stadium. The BCCI has also announced the venues for the five-ODI bilateral series that follows the Tests. The Wankhede Stadium is undergoing a facelift ahead of the World Cup next year, and the MCA had said it didn’t want to rush things and host a Test without a proper trial run.Since the renovation work began, the nearby Brabourne Stadium has been hosting matches, including first-class games. It staged a Test between India and Sri Lanka last December and the home matches of Mumbai Indians during the third season of the IPL.The one-day leg of the series will be held in Guwahati, Mohali, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai. There is no change in the scheduling and venues of the first two Tests: Ahmedabad hosts the first between November 4th and 8th with Kanpur staging the next between November 12th and 16th.The New Zealand series takes place soon after India host Australia for two Tests and three ODIs. The Indian board has advanced the start of both Tests against Ricky Ponting’s side by a day (first Test at Mohali begins on October 1 and the next at Bangalore on the 9th), and the first two ODIs by two days.

Leeds must finally unleash Nohan Kenneh

With the Premier League set to get back underway soon, Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa will be desperately hoping that his side incurs far fewer injuries and illnesses than they did in the first half of the season.

The Whites were among the most affected clubs in the top flight, with numerous star players ruled out for considerable amounts of time – Kalvin Phillips is still out of action now.

While Bielsa will be eager to keep his thin squad together for as long as possible, there may well be increasing opportunities for some of his club’s brightest young prospects.

Joe Gelhardt has already seen some first-team action in recent weeks and months, but it’s Nohan Kenneh’s potential exposure into the side which could cause the most excitement.

Describing himself as someone who is “aggressive and hard-working who likes to break down play”, but also likes “getting forward and scoring long-range goals”, Kenneh seems like he could thrive in the anchor man role if given the chance by Bielsa.

Speaking on The Roaring Peacock Youth Pod, Matty Ingham said: “One of the biggest prospects in the academy if we’re being honest. Big, physical presence, can carry the ball and he’s powerful and quick.”

The teenager has already admitted to modelling himself on Phillips, while he also added that he is a fan of Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, saying: “Currently I look up to Kalvin Phillips as (we) both play in a similar position, but I occasionally watch videos of Patrick Vieira for his qualities in midfield.”

He also has a big fan in The Athletic’s Phil Hay, who dubbed the 19-year-old “supremely gifted”, while he has been a permanent fixture in the under-23s, predominantly playing at centre-back.

Standing at an imposing 6 foot 3, he seems to have the physical attributes to hold his own at Premier League level; and given his versatility of being able to play in defence and as an anchor man in midfield, seems like he could be a perfect squad option for Bielsa going forward.

While the excitement surrounding Gelhardt is understandable, Kenneh could be the kind of hidden gem who makes the biggest mark at Leeds.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped an exciting Leeds United transfer update…

Spurs gifted Dembele boost

Taking to Twitter, reliable ESPN reporter Moises Llorens has shared a big update on Barcelona attacker and Tottenham Hotspur target Ousmane Dembele amid his contract stand-off.

The Lowdown: Spurs table offer…

As reported in recent months, the France international is a target for Spurs and manager Antonio Conte as Lilywhites chief Fabio Paratici takes to the 2022 free agent market.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

According to Mundo Deportivo, Tottenham’s managing director is eyeing ‘quality players at zero cost’ for his countryman at N17 – including Dembele, whose deal runs out at the end of this season.

Spurs have also allegedly made an offer to sign the 24-year-old on a pre-contract, promising ‘a lot of money’ and the guarantee of being a key player (Mundo Deportivo).

After recent claims Tottenham will ‘push hard’ for his signing this month, ESPN journalist Llorens has shared a significant update.

The Latest: Spurs gifted possible boost,,,

According to his information, sharing news late Tuesday night, Dembele is set for a crunch ‘meeting’ today amid his contract stand-off at the Camp Nou.

However, it is now apparently very unlikely that the player signs an extension, with the difference in negotiations ‘practically insurmountable’.

Indeed, the La Liga giants would apparently see Dembele penning fresh terms as a ‘miracle’ in what could be a boost for Paratici and Spurs.

The Verdict: Time to strike?

The forward looks almost certain to leave as things stand, but does that mean Spurs should continue their alleged pursuit and sink the final blow?

Lauded as ‘exciting’ and ‘almost unplayable’ at times by Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand, Dembele’s ability is clearly rated and there is a reason Barca paid an initial £97 million to sign him from Borussia Dortmund back in 2017.

However, the winger also has a troubling history of hamstring problems and could command a hefty salary – with his current wages believed to be around £210,000-per-week.

An offer around this amount or over would make him the highest paid star at Hotspur Way, even above the likes of Harry Kane, and it would arguably be a gamble to invest that much in a player prone to absences.

Coming with plus and negative points, a move for Dembele before January 31 could prove potentially fruitful but with a big element of risk.

England eye victory after Bell's 192

Ian Bell warmed up for the Ashes with his best first-class score in two years, while Australia’s batting plans for the Gabba Test became much clearer after Usman Khawaja and Callum Ferguson failed again

The Bulletin by Brydon Coverdale at Bellerive Oval19-Nov-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsTim Bresnan picked up three wickets, including Callum Ferguson bowled for 10•Getty ImagesIan Bell warmed up for the Ashes with his best first-class score in two years, while Australia’s batting plans for the Gabba Test became much clearer after Usman Khawaja and Callum Ferguson failed again. The two young batsmen are in Australia’s 17-man Test squad but they are now unlikely to unseat Michael Hussey, who made a career-saving Sheffield Shield century at the MCG.The first Test begins next Thursday and the Australian selectors will be pleased with the efforts of Hussey and Mitchell Johnson, who in the same match added a five-wicket haul to his first-innings hundred. The major question now surrounds the spin-bowling position, after Nathan Hauritz sent down only one over in New South Wales’ loss as the SCG, where Tasmania’s Xavier Doherty bowled tidily.A 12- or 13-man squad is expected to be named on Saturday and it would be a surprise if Khawaja or Ferguson feature, after their disappointing efforts against England’s second-string attack in Hobart. Ferguson was bowled for 10 by a Tim Bresnan delivery that kept low, after he made 7 in the first innings, while Khawaja’s 13 from Wednesday was followed by a second-innings golden duck.Bresnan came around the wicket and managed to nip the ball away from Khawaja, who edged behind at almost the same moment Hussey emerged from the MCG dressing rooms on 98 after the Shield tea break. Bresnan (3 for 25) also accounted for Ed Cowan, who played on for 33 trying to pull, and by stumps Australia A were 3 for 128 with Phillip Hughes on 58 and Cameron White on 22.England’s lead was 165 and they were in a strong position to push for victory, which would keep their morale high less than a week from the start of the Ashes – not that Bell needs any more of a confidence boost after his 192. His 275-ball innings eventually came to an end after six hours, when he drove Steven Smith to cover.Although he missed the double-century he certainly achieved his goal of turning his innings into a big hundred. Bell’s tempo on the third day wasn’t quite as quick as the second afternoon, but he continued to tick the scoreboard over, first in the latter stages of a 240-run partnership with Paul Collingwood, and then with an entertaining lower order.Collingwood began the day on 74 and was searching for triple-figures for the first time on the tour, having been out for 94 against South Australia last week. But this time he could only reach 89 and was caught behind when he tried to hook Clint McKay, to end a stand that began at a slightly precarious 5 for 137.Andrew Strauss was in no hurry to declare, happy to let Bell and the lower order dent the confidence of Australia’s fringe bowlers further. Smith finished with 2 for 118 from his 27 overs, having picked up Matt Prior, caught at point miscuing an attempted slog, for 27. The left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe ended up with 4 for 88, including the final two wickets.O’Keefe had Bresnan lbw for 36 and Chris Tremlett caught at mid-off for 16 to bring the innings to a close with Ajmal Shahzad not out on 18. It left Kevin Pietersen the only man who failed to reach double-figures for the innings. It was a minor quibble for an England outfit full of confidence.

Manchester United: Fans react to Dan-Axel Zagadou links

Manchester United have entered talks to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Dan-Axel Zagadou.

That’s according to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna, and, as to be expected, a number of United fans have been reacting to the rumours on social media.

Zagadou is 22 years of age and is out of contract with Dortmund at the end of June. The French centre-back has made 80 appearances for the club, however, he has suffered from numerous injury issues, missing 77 games since 2017/18.

Despite that, it seems as if United are keen to take advantage of Zagadou’s contract situation, with Aouna revealing on Twitter that Ralf Rangnick has started discussions with the defender’s agent.

Dortmund want to extend Zagadou’s stay in Germany, but he is now free to pen pre-contract terms at Old Trafford.

@utdreport shared Aouna’s claim on Twitter on Wednesday morning. This is what these United fans had to say in reply, with many not keen on a transfer and one describing his injury record as ‘awful’.

Zimbabwe close to fairytale finish

The fairytale of Zimbabwe’s run to the final is etched in every scorecard of this tri-series. They have not just been winning but have looked like a team that knows how to win

The Preview by Sriram Veera08-Jun-2010Match FactsJune 9, 2010
Start time 0900 (0700 GMT)Will we see more of these happy celebrations from Zimbabwe in the final?•AFPThe Big PictureThe fairytale of Zimbabwe’s run to the final is etched in every scorecard of this tri-series. They have not just been winning but have looked like a team that knows how to win. They have rarely chased targets with such serenity ever before. Where did the nerves vanish? Where did the infamous middle-order collapses disappear? Where did that tendency to choke at the sight of victory go? Zimbabwe have had only one bad day so far and their confidence has visibly increased with each win. Their celebrations – the Bebeto-style cradle-the-child, Hamilton Masakadza’s ‘just married’ under-shirt flash, and the choreographed dance between Ray Price and Chris Mpofu – indicate a happy team basking and growing in success. They are a game away from their first triumph in a multi-nation tournament involving Test-playing nations. The stakes are that big for Zimbabwe and their fans on Wednesday. Schoolboys have flooded the stands and they have inspired grown-ups to dance as well, giving the atmosphere a carnival feel. While it’s tempting to side with the underdogs, it will be foolish to overlook Sri Lanka, the strongest team in the tri-series. Nuwan Kulasekara, a vastly under-rated new-ball bowler, will return for the final after missing the dead rubber against Zimbabwe, which Sri Lanka lost. So will Ajantha Mendis, who, despite his recent decline, sparkled in the second game against India, conceding only six runs in two overs during the batting Powerplay. Mendis has a terrific record against Zimbabwe, with 20 wickets from seven games. Tillakaratne Dilshan hinted that Angelo Mathews might also return for the final. Sri Lanka are going to be difficult to beat twice in a row.The final will also help determine whether this is a ‘win toss, bowl first, and win the game’ tournament. The inconsequential game between these two teams nearly disproved that theory. After getting sent in, Dilshan started with such impunity that Sri Lanka were on course for 300 at one stage but were thwarted by Zimbabwe’s spinners. Elton Chigumbura had used seamers for 13 of the first 15 overs but he won’t be repeating that tactic in the final. Expect the nagging Price and the deceptive Prosper Utseya to be unleashed on the Sri Lankans with the new ball, while Graeme Cremer and Greg Lamb await their turn. An absorbing contest awaits us.Form guide (most recent first)Zimbabwe: WWLWL
Sri Lanka: LWWLWWatch out for…Opener Brendan Taylor has been consistent this series but it’s Hamilton Masakadza who provides Zimbabwe the X-factor at the top. A lot depends on him if Zimbabwe are to get an aggressive start. Masakadza is unafraid to go over the top and has the skill to accompany that attitude.Don’t look beyond Sri Lanka’s best new-ball operator Nuwan Kulasekara. He has a wonderful wrist position at release and he can either cut the ball in or get it to go through straight without discernible difference in his action. Time and again batsmen have fallen to his two-card trick. Kulasekara, however, is not such a force with the old ball and he could bowl a large quota of his overs up front.Team news Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 3 Dinesh Chandimal, 4 Jeevan Mendis, 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Angelo Mathews/Thilan Samaraweera, 7 Thissara Perera, 8 Suraj Randiv, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Dilhara Fernando/Thilan Thushara, 11 Ajantha Mendis.Zimbabwe (possible) 1 Hamilton Masakadza, 2 Brendan Taylor (wk) 3 Chamu Chibhabha/Andy Blignaut, 4 Charles Coventry, 5 Tatenda Taibu, 6 Craig Ervine, 7 Greg Lamb, 8 Elton Chigumbura (capt), 9 Graeme Cremer, 10 Prosper Utseya, 11 Ray Price.Stats and trivia Kulasekara has 88 wickets at an average of 27.93 in his career but his 10 against Zimbabwe cost only 16.20 apiece. Zimbabwe have won 99 ODIs so far. Will they win their 100th game tomorrow?Dilshan has only three fifties from 16 games against Zimbabwe and his highest is 78.Quotes”I try to tell myself to stay relaxed as much as possible; you have a job to do and go out there and do it. They [Sri Lanka] have rested some players in this game and so definitely the contest will be stiffer in the final.”
“The seamers have struggled with the new ball but the spinners have bowled really well all through this season. If I lose the toss in the final, I won’t be too concerned; it’s just the matter of doing well on field.”

Hay gives update on Leeds man Summerville

There is ‘European interest’ in Leeds United youngster Crysencio Summerville, according to a fresh update from reliable journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Summerville struggling for minutes

The 20-year-old is considered one of the most exciting young players at Elland Road currently – he has been hailed as ‘wonderful’ by Chris Powell – but he has struggled to make his mark this season.

Summerville has been limited to just five substitute appearances in the Premier League, getting a total of 119 minutes to his name in the competition.

It could be that a loan move away benefits the winger and a key update has now emerged regarding the situation.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Hay provides key update

Taking to Twitter on Friday morning, the reliable Hay confirmed that there is interest in Summerville from abroad but Marcelo Bielsa is reluctant to let him leave:

“A fair bit of European interest in Summerville, not least in Germany and Holland, but Bielsa doesn’t want to lose him.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-33/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Good experience

While there is a risk element in letting anyone move on this month, given Leeds’ injury problems this season, Summerville could benefit from a new temporary challenge.

Chances are, the youngster will invariably have to make do with a squad role between now and May, at best, whereas he could earn regular starts elsewhere, maturing as a player in the process.

Keeping hold of Summerville beyond January certainly wouldn’t be a disaster but it is hard to see where minutes are to going to come his way, giving the talent ahead of him in the pecking order, whether it be Raphinha, Jack Harrison or Dan James.

Butt's plea for delay in ICC hearing rejected

Salman Butt’s request for a postponement in the ICC tribunal’s hearing into the spot-fixing case has been rejected

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Dec-2010Salman Butt’s request for a postponement in the ICC tribunal’s hearing into the spot-fixing case has been rejected. Michael Beloff QC, the ICC’s code of conduct commissioner and a member of the three-man tribunal to hear the charges against Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, made the decision during a lengthy teleconference with Butt’s lawyers on Wednesday.”Mr Beloff, the Chairman of the ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal, following a lengthy telephone hearing and having received written submissions, has ruled that Mr Butt’s application is denied and as such, the full hearing will take place as scheduled from 6-11 January 2011 in Doha, Qatar,” an ICC release said.Butt’s legal representatives were aiming for a postponement of the hearings to a date after the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) had dealt with the case. Independent of the ICC, the Scotland Yard is pursuing its own case against the trio in the UK and has handed over evidence to the CPS.The CPS is to determine whether the case is strong enough to warrant a criminal prosecution on charges of a conspiracy to defraud, but since receiving two files of evidence from Scotland Yard – in September and November – no decision has been reached. In the early days of the case, the PCB repeatedly expressed concern over the two separate investigations being pursued against the players and asked for one to be completed before the other was taken up. But the board has since withdrawn support for the trio.Yasin Patel, a London-based barrister, will handle both the ICC and Scotland Yard cases for Butt. Asif and Amir had not asked for a postponement, though Shahid Karim, who represents Amir, while confident of his client’s prospects, said he would have preferred an independent tribunal instead of the three-man panel set up by the ICC for the hearings in Doha.Apart from Beloff, that panel includes Justice Albie Sachs of South Africa and Sharad Rao of Kenya.
